→ Ambrose Philips라는 로맨틱한 시만 쓰는 시인이 있었는데 Henry Carey라는 사람이 Philips의 무미 건조한 문학성을 비꼬면서 그의 애칭인 Amby를 따서 '그의 글은 Namby Pamby다'라고 감상주의를 논박한데서 유래.
- willy-nilly: 원하든 원하지 않든 무슨일이 일어나다
→ 'Nil'은 무언가를 원치 않는다는 뜻의 고대어인데 Will I? Nil I?가 변천되어 현재에 이름.
- fuddy-duddy: 변함이 없는 사람(someone who doesn't like change)
ex) Mr. Lee never goes anywhere new, always wears a tie, eats the same food every day, and is in bed by nine o'clock. He's a real fuddy-duddy.
- hush-hush: 비밀스러운(secret)
ex) She works for the government, but nobody knows exactly what she does. Her job is very hush-hush.
- mumbo jumbo: 사투리, 이해하기 힘든 말(language that cannot easily be understood, jargon)
ex) Have you tried to read and understand all that mumbo jumbo in the insurance policy?
- wishy-washy: 우유부단한, 약한(undecided, weak, not definite and clear)
ex) My boss is very wishy-washy. He has trouble deciding who should do what, and he doesn't give clear orders.
- wheeler-dealer: 수완가, 책략가(a person who is always making business deals and trying to get the best deal)
ex) Mr. Park is big-time wheeler-dealer in real estate. He keeps buying and selling stores and hotels all over the country.

(2) 진실로 평화를 희망한다면 단지 희망하는 것만으로는 아무 것도 되지 않는다. 전쟁에 대해서 연구하고 필요한 대책을 강구하지 않으면 안 된다.
1) 진실로: really; from the bottom of one's heart
2) 희망하다: hope [or wish] for; aspire after
→「대책을 강구하다 (세우다)」에는 다음과 같은 표현이 있다.
- 그것에 대해서 무엇인가 대책을 세우지 않으면 안 된다.

3) 보고 있다: be gazing at ~; be looking (fixedly) at
→ 「쑥스러움」은 번역하기에 상당한 연구가 필요한 표현이다. 보통 「쑥스러움」이라고 하면 「너무 드러나서, 부끄럽다, 어색하다」라는 의미인데 이 문제문에서는 「~에 자신이 생기다」로 표현하는 쪽이 좋다.
- 그녀는 선생에게 조금만 칭찬을 들으면 금방 수줍어한다.
She is delight and proud whenever her teacher praises her.
- 별것 아닌 일에 톰은 금방 자신만만해 진다. Tom gets elated over trifling matters.
- 그때가 그의 가장 화려한 시대였다. Those were the days when he felt extremely proud of himself.
ANS 1) I was delighted and proud that I had chosen a book all by myself for the first time, and I felt as if all the people in the bookstore were looking at me.
ANS 2) I got elated because I had for the first time chosen a book for myself, which made me feel as if everybody in the bookstore were gazing at me.

(4) 무엇이 일어날 것인가 알고 있었다면 그들은 자기들의 계획을 바꾸었을 것이다.
1) If를 사용하지 않고 도치시킴으로써 가정을 표현할 수가 있다. 즉 뒤집는 것이다. Had they known ~ 으로 한다. 이것은 문어적 표현이라고 본다.
2) If they knew … they would change … 로 하면 「만일 그들이 알고 있으면 ~ 그들이 바꿀텐데」로 되어 「현재 사실의 반대」가 된다.
3) If they had realized what was shortly going to happen, they would have changed their plans.
→ 「이제 막 ~하려고 한다」 be about to -부정사 (=be just going to -부정사/ be shortly going to -부정사)

(6) 2～3일 동안 당신 자동차를 나에게 빌려 줄 수 있겠는지요.
→ 지극히 정중한 부탁을 할 때는 I wonder if you would mind ～ing의 구문을 사용하면 좋다.
→ Borrow A from B와 lend A to B [lend B A]를 혼동하지 말도록.
→ Do you think I could possibly borrow your car for a few days?
예문만큼 정중하지는 않지만, I wonder를 사용하지 않고 다음과 같이 표현할 수도 있다. Would you mind lending me your car for a couple of days?

(7) 내가 당신을 위해 무엇인가 할 수 있는 일이 있으면 주저마시고 알려주세요.
→ 「염려말고 ~해 주세요/ 주저말고 ~해주세요」는 don't hesitate to-부정사.

→ let A know (B) 「 A에게 B를 알리다」 Let A know는 미래 일에 대해 흔히 쓴다.

거분사」의 문형이다. If you had not advised me again and again 이라고 할 수도 있지만,「여러 차례 되풀이된 충고」라고, 명사형을 이용하여, Your repeated advice라하고 If it had not been for your repeated advice~나 But for (또는 Without) your repeated advice~로 해 본다. 또 If 를 생략해서 Had it not been for your repeated advice~ 라고도 할 수 있다.
(ANS) If it had not been for your repeated advice, I should have been taken in.

10. 여가가 없어서 독서할 시간이 없다고 푸념하는 사람들이 많지만, 마음만 먹으면 아무리 바빠도 책을 읽을 수 있기 마련이다.

6. 처음 런던에 가신다면, 누군가의 안내를 받는 것이 좋을 겁니다. 그러는 편이 시간과 노력을 많이 덜게 될테니까요.
→ 「누군가의 안내를 받다」는「누군가에게 안내하도록 부탁하다」로 보고 have+사람+ 원형동사 구문으로 한다.
→ 「그러는 것이 ~을 덜게된다」는 그 앞의 내용을 it로 받아서 Then it will save~의 구문이 자연스럽다.「처음」은 for the first time.
→ 「누군가의 안내를 받다」는 have someone show you around 혹은 ask somebody to take you around.「시간과 노력」을 고지식하게 옮기면 time and energy이지만, time and trouble도 있다.
→ 「내 대신 가게에 가 줄래? 그러면 내가 안가도 되는데」 Will you go to the shop for me? It'll save me a trip.
(ANS 1) If you are going to London for the first time, you'd better have someone show you around the city. It'll save you a lot of time and trouble.
(ANS 2) If this is your first time to go to London, you'd better ask somebody to show you around the city. You can save a lot of time and energy that way.

5. 괜찮으시면 잠시 동안 혼자 있고 싶습니다.
→ 극히 보통의 긍정문이라도 내용에 따라서는 요구 및 요청을 나타낼 수가 있다.
→「괜찮으시면」if you (can) allow it로 옮기지 않는다.
→「~하고 싶다」는 I'd like to부정사 (=would like to부정사)
→「잠시 동안」for a while/ for some time/ for a bit
→「괜찮으시면」은 경우에 따라서는 영작하지 않아도 된다. ex) What do you say to going to Pusan next Sunday? 괜찮으시면 이번 일요일에 부산에 가지 않겠습니까?

remark는 잠깐 지나는 결에 본 것, 처음으로 읽은 것, 잠시 주의를 끌었던 것 따위에 대한 짤막한 소견·판단으로, 말이나 글로 된 다소 우발적인 표현이다. 이 말에는 최종적인 또는 곰곰이 생각한 판단의 뜻은 들어있지 않다.
Except for a few remarks, she had nothing to say about the play.
comment는 판단을 나타내거나 어떤 특별한 점을 설명하는 것이나 무엇을 설명·비평·해석하는 말을 뜻한다.
The candidate said he would make no comment on the suggestion./ If I might be permitted to make a comment, I would say that the interpretation of Lear's madness is wholly at variance with is made plain in the text.
observation은 증거가 되는 것을 다소 주의 깊게 음미한 결과를 토대로 한, 이치를 따진 판단·의견을 말한다. 판단과 경험을 토대로 하여 곰곰이 잘 생각한 진술의 뜻을 품고 있다.

[比較] therefore, hence, consequently, then, accordingly, so
therefore, hence는 for this reason의 뜻으로 앞선 진술에서 이끌어내는 필연적인 추론을 도입하는데 주로 쓰인다. therefore는 보통 결론을 도입하고, hence는 흔히 therefore와 바뀌어 쓰이기는 하지만, 앞선 진술을 강조한다. therefore는 특히 추리의 정확함을 그 뜻 속에 품고 있어, 논리학, 법률, 수학 따위와 격식 차리는 딱딱한 문체에 쓰인다.
All men are rational beings, Socrates is a man; therefore Socrates is a rational being./ He was the only candidate; therefore, he was elected.
consequently는 as a result, or sequence, or effect of the preceding(앞선 것의 결과로서)의 뜻이며, 흔히 추론을 도입하는 데에 쓰이기는 해도, 반드시 결론의 필연성을 의미하지는 않고, 오히려 결론에 대한 충분한 근거를 암시한다.

또한 뒤따라오는 것이 앞선 것의 결과임을 가리킨다.

이 말은 딱딱한 말이기는 하지만 therefore보다는 덜 딱딱하다.
then은 since the preceding is true(앞선 것이 사실이므로)의 뜻이며, 논리적인 인과관계를 나타내는 데에 쓰이는 경우, 조건문에서 결과를 표시하는 절에 주로 사용된다. 구어적인 말이다.
If A is true, then B is false.
accordingly는 in conformity with the preceding(앞선 것에 일치해서)의 뜻이며, 보통 논리적 결과 또는 인과관계를 나타내지만, 필연성보다는 결과의 자연스러움을 암시한다. consequently만큼 딱딱하지는 않은 말이다.
He said he was hungry; accordingly they shared their meager lunch with him.
so는 because the preceding is true(앞선 것이 사실이기 때문에), this being the case(경우가 이러하므로)의 뜻이며 구어적인 말이다. 어떤 인과관계를 가리키는 지 그 암시하는 바가 명확하지 않은 것이 보통이다.

[比較] use, employ, utilize, exploit, work
use는 일반적인 말로 한 사물을 자기의 목적을 달성하기 위한 수단이나 도움으로 삼는 것을 말한다.
use a pencil(telephone)/ Use your eyes, child! It's right there in front of you!
사람에 관해서 쓰이는 경우에는 사람을 수동적인 물건으로 보는 데서 흔히 치욕적인 의미를 갖고 있고 이기적이고 흉한 뜻을 암시한다.
He's only using you./ He used his brother to advance himself.
따라서 I could use your help this afternoon.이라고 하는 것이 I could use you this afternoon.이라고 하는 것보다 재치 있는 표현이지만, 친한 사이에는 후자는 전자를 단축한 것으로 인정될 수 있다. 또 흔히 ‘소비하다’의 뜻으로도 쓰인다.
use eggs in cooking/ All the butter has been used.
또한 used는 미국 상업 용어에서 secondhand(헌), worn(낡은)에 대한 완곡어로 쓰인다.
used books/ Used cars and trucks were being marketed in this fashion.
employ는 use보다는 약간 품위가 있는 말로, 놀고 있는 것과 쓰이지 않는 것을 말하고, 사람에 관해서 쓰이는 경우에는 일과 급료를 주는 것을 가리킨다.
She had employed her leisure in reading every book that came in her way./ employ a vacant lot as a playground/ He employs five mechanics.
use와 employ는 흔히 바뀌어 쓰일 수 있지만 뜻에 약간의 차이가 있다. 연장과 수단의 뜻이 강할 때에는 use가 즐겨 쓰이고, 종사·선택·이용 따위의 뜻이 강할 때에는 employ가 즐겨 쓰인다.
A writer uses words effectively who knows what ones he should employ in a given context.
utilize는 실용적으로 또는 이익이 되게 사용하는 것을 말하고, 엄밀한 뜻에서는 더 좋은 것이 없는 경우에 무엇을 실용적으로 또는 유익하게 쓰는 것을 가리킨다.
Well, you'll just have to utilize what's there.
exploit는 ‘이용하다, 착취하다’의 뜻으로 실용적으로 이용하는 것을 의미한다.
He exploited the concession to the last penny.(그는 이권을 모두 이용해 먹었다.)
특히 사람에 대해서 쓰이는 경우에는 언제나 자기 목적을 위해서 이기적으로 이용하는 것을 의미한다.
They have exploited that child mercilessly.
work는 타동사로 엄밀한 뜻은 ‘(물건에) 노력을 들이다’(expend labor upon)이다.
He worked the soil.(그는 땅을 갈았다.)/ If the clay is worked in the hands it will soon become soft and malleable.
확대된 용법에서는 흔히 욕하는 의미로서의 exploit, utilize에 대한 동의어로 쓰인다.
She's been working him for forty years.

(~ may be ) forgiven for thinking ~/ if ~: ~해도 이해할 만하다
ex) A world in which raw power is still held in the highest respect may be forgiven if it is unimpressed with a leader so patently averse to using it.
무력 사용을 아주 꺼리는 지도자 (클린턴을 가리킴)를 대단치 않게 생각하는 세계라면 적나라한 무력을 지닌 나라가 가장 두려운 존재로 생각되는 것도 무리가 아니다.
