[比較] what ever, whatever
What ever can it mean?(대체 무슨 말이냐?), What ever shall we do?(대체 어떻게 해야 할까?)
(b) 관계사: whatever는 복합관계사 what의 강조형으로, all that, any(thing) that(~인 것은 모두, ~인 것은 무엇이나)를 의미한다.
Eat whatever you like./ Whatever is left over is yours.
Whatever request you make will be granted.(네가 요구하는 것은 무엇이든 들어주겠다.)
형용사로 쓰이는 경우 더 한층 강조하기 위해 any, no 따위로 수식된 명사 다음에 자리를 잡아, for any reason whatever(여하한 이유로든지)처럼 할 수 있다. for whatever reason보다 뜻이 강하다.
I have no plans whatever.
Whatever happens, we'll meet here tonight./ Whatever man told you that, it is not true.

The anti-establishment student movement has been nurtured in
fertile soil, while faculty members remain passive or accept the
demands of student leaders, who have the power to sway school
administrations. Ironically, activist student leaders are given various
benefits from school authorities and student councils are also granted
subsidies or allowed to exclusively operate vending machines and
shops _ allegedly in return for their connivance at school administration
irregularities.

The 198 men granted exemption did not even attain one year of their required
service in the military. According to the law no soldier shall be granted a
military exemption for health reasons unless he has been receiving treatment for
at least one year. Thus, the exemptions were illegal in the first place regardless
if the claims of health problems were true or not.

deference ( courteous regard for another's wish.)
In deference to his desires, the employers granted him a holiday.

franchise 사용권, 독점판매권, 선거권 (right granted by authority; right to
vote; license to sell a product in a particular territory)
The city issue a franchise to the company to operate surface transit lines on
the streets for 99 years ; For most of American history women lacked the right
to vote: not until the early twentieth century was the franchise granted to
women ; Stan owns a Carvel's ice cream franchise in Chinatown

take for granted

수긍: resign oneself, take for granted, take in stride

Everyone took his probity for granted; his defalcations, therefore, shocked us all.

You cannot ignore me for months on end and then take it for granted that I will be available whenever you want me.

People often take freedom of speech for granted in America.
It is hard for them to realize that in many countries, publishers and writers are not always allowed to criticize the government.
Americans are so used to hearing praise or criticism of their government in newspapers.

My husband and I first met while we were theachers in Idaho. We planned to be
married during spring vacation in my hometown in New Mexico. Since we had such
a long distance to drive, we wrote a letter to the superintendent of schools asking
if we might be granted two days of personal leave in order to make the trip. The
superintendent replied that the school board, in determining valid reasons for
personal leave, did not include getting married. Since there was no such provision,
he went on, he would grant us the two days as medical leave - on the premise that
we were both clearly suffering form lovesickness!

Memory-training courses are much in vogue nowadays, and it seems to be taken
for granted that the more things we remember, the happier we are.

The pleasures of memory must certainly be rated high, but I am sure
forgetfulness also plays a part in making human beings happy.
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth would have given a good deal to be able to forget
the murder of Duncan, and many a politician has longed to be allowed to
forget his election pledges.
Some of the unhappiest people in the world are those who cannot forget
injuries inflicted on them in the past. Others are equally miserable, because
they cannot forget wrongs they have done others.
Human beings are so constituted, indeed, that they forget the things they
would like to remember, and remember the things they would prefer to forget.
The memory should be trained, I think, to overcome both those weaknesses.

* take something for granted 당연한 것으로 받아들이다 accept it without question:
I take it for granted that we should build new roads.

An elderly man on the beach found a magic lamp. He picked it up and a genie
appeared. "Because you have freed me," the genie said, "I will grant you
a wish."
The man thought for a moment and then responded, "My brother and I had
a fight 30 years ago and he hasn't spoken to me since. I wish that he'll
finally forgive me."
There was a thunderclap, and the genie declared, "Your wish has been
granted. You know," the genie continued, "most men would have asked for
wealth or fame. But you only wanted the love of your brother. Is it because
you are old and dying?"
"No way!" the man cried. "But my brother is, and he's worth about $60 million."

*presume 간주하다; 추정하다 take for granted; suppose (to be true):
In Britain an accused man is presumed (to be) innocent until he is proved guilty.

The process we call seeing, which we all take for granted, is
unbelievably complicated. We see not `what is there' but what
we have been taught to see there. The human eye is a lens that
only receives images; these images are referred to the brain,
where they must be patterned and given meaning. And meaning is
a convention that stems from our education and our expectations.
We see things as we are, not as they are.

*take something for granted 당연한 것으로 받아들이다 regard it as true or as certain to happen:
I take it for granted what we should build new roads.

We eat many foods in order to live and grow. We eat grains, vegetables,
fruits, nuts, meat, and fish. We are so accustomed to a varied diet that
we usually take it for granted that other people also have a variety of
foods. Many things determine what foods people eat. Climate plays a part.
So does soil. In addition, there are many other factors which play their
part, such as the amount of money and crop land available.

I hear the laughter, I taste the tears.
But I can't get near you now.
Oh, can't you see it baby You've got me going crazy.
Whatever it takes or how my heart breaks.
I will be right here waiting for you.
I wonder how we can survive this romance.
But in the end if I'm with you.
I'll take the chance.
Oh, can't you see it baby you've got me going crazy.
I will be right here waiting for you.
Whatever it takes or how my heart breaks.
Do that to me one more time.
Once is never enough with a man like you.
I can never get enough of a man like you.
Kiss me like you just did.
Oh baby do that to me once again.
Pass that by me one more time.
Once just isn't enough for my heart to hear.
Tell it to me one more time.
Oh baby tell it to me once again.
Oh baby do that to me once again.
Oh baby, do that to me one more time.
Do it again one more time.
No I can't forget this evening or your.
face as you were leaving.
But I guess that's just the way the story goes.
You always smile but in your eyes.
Your sorrow shows yes it shows.
No I can't forget tomorrow when.
I think of all my sorrow I had.
You there, but then I let.
You go and now it's only fair.
That I should let you know what you should know.
I can't live I can't give anymore.
I can't live if living is without you.
I can't give I can't give I can't anymore.

Rebates
-
Similar to discounts, rebates are reductions in the gross price that a buyer is charged for goods.
Unlike discounts, rebates do not result in a reduction in the remittance from the buyer to the
seller for the particular merchandise with which the rebate is associated. Rather, a rebate is a
refund of monies paid, a credit against monies due on future purchases, or the conveyance of
some other item of value by the seller to the buyer after the buyer has paid for the merchandise.
When the seller establishes the terms and conditions under which the rebate will be granted at or
before the time of sale, the Department reduces the gross selling price by the amount of the
rebate. (See also Discounts and Direct vs. Indirect Expenses.)

(Rebates)
-

19 CFR 351.305(b) deals with the APO application process itself. Paragraph (b)(1)
permits the use of two independent representatives, with one representative being
designated as the lead representative. Generally, APO applicants are attorneys admitted
to a U.S. bar or trade consultants. APO access is granted to non-legal representatives
only if the applicants have a significant practice before the DOC. Paragraph (b)(2)
provides procedures for applying for an APO and establishes a "short form" application
that applicants can generate from their own word-processing equipment. An applicant
must acknowledge that any discrepancies between the application and the DOC's APO
placed on the record will be interpreted in a manner consistent with the DOC's APO.

The DOC will grant APO access to qualified applicants by including the name of the
applicant on the APO service list. Normally access will be granted within five days of
receipt of the application. All applications that are filed in the DOC's Central Record
Unit are forwarded to the APO Office for immediate processing. It is possible however,
that an application may be attached to other correspondence, such as a letter of
appearance, and might be misdirected and delivered to an analyst in error.
