account는 무엇보다도 먼저 은행 계좌를 떠올리기가 쉬우므로
short accounts라 하면 "짧은 계좌?"라고 의아해 하실지도
모르겠습니다만 account의 기본적인 뜻은 "계산," "셈"이므로 이
속담은 계산이 빨라야 친구와의 관계가 오래간다는 말입니다.
다시 말해 친한 사람일수록 금전 관계 등은 깨끗이 해 둘 필요가
있다는 것을 암시하고 있는 말입니다.
account와 관련된 표현은 상업의 역사가 엄청나게 오래 된 만큼
매우 다양하게 사용되고 있습니다만 account가 응용된 표현은
우선 제쳐 두고 계좌라는 의미에서의 account를 살펴보기로
하겠습니다.
미국에서와 같이 개인 수표 발급이 자리를 잡은 곳에서는 은행

short-term, high-yield deposit instruments, as financial

관리"라는 어색한 표현 대신 자연스런 우리말로 "은행
관계자"라고 하는 것이 좋습니다. 사소한 것 같더라도 막상
사용하거나 들어 보면 금방 어색한 것을 느낄 수 있으므로 이러한
것에도 주의를 기울이시기 바랍니다.
예금에 따른 수익은 보통 이자(interest)로 대표되는데 이러한
이자 등의 수익을 yield라고 하므로 저축 상품에서 발생하는
소득은 yield on savings deposit라고 합니다.
요즘과 같이 금리 변동(interest rate fluctuation)이 심한
때에는 금융기관 (financial institutions)들이 시장 금리와
연동되어 움직이는 저축상품을 많이 내놓게 되는 것이 일반적인
현상입니다. 이와 같이 "~에 연동되어 움직이다"는 영어로는
"move in combination with ~"라 하면 되는데 다음 문장에서

썼습니다.
bear는 "~을 품다," "~을 담다"라는 의미이므로 여기서는 reflect
또는 represent (반영하다)와 같은 의미로서 사용되어
금융시장에서의 금리 변동 (interest rates fluctuations)를
반영하는 상품이라는 의미를 충분히 살려 주는 표현이 됩니다.
예문에서의 new products for savings는 new savings accounts라
바꾸어도 같은 뜻이 됩니다. 번역할 때 항상 염두에 두셔야 할
부분은 우리말로 자연스럽게 나올 수 있도록 어느 정도의
융통성을 가질 필요가 있다는 것입니다. savings account라 해서
반드시 저축계좌라고 번역하지 마시고 전후 문맥을 파악하여 저축
상품이라고 옮기는 것이 좋습니다.
account가 응용되는 표현은 상당히 많습니다. "계좌"라고 단순히
암기만 하지 마시고 이번 기회에 사전을 펴고 여러 가지 응용
표현을 몇 가지라도 공부해 두실 필요가 있습니다.
