1) 처음으로: for the first time
2) 스스로: for myself; by myself
3) 보고 있다: be gazing at ~; be looking (fixedly) at
She is delight and proud whenever her teacher praises her.
Tom gets elated over trifling matters.
Those were the days when he felt extremely proud of himself.
ANS 1) I was delighted and proud that I had chosen a book all by myself for the first time, and I felt as if all the people in the bookstore were looking at me.
ANS 2) I got elated because I had for the first time chosen a book for myself, which made me feel as if everybody in the bookstore were gazing at me.

The first part of the Bible을 주어로 tells를 동사로 a story of how~를 목적어로 삼으면 자연스런 영어문장을 꾸밀 수 있다.
Before the time of Darwin, most people in the Western world
→ 성서에 쓰여 있는 것과 똑같이: exactly as was written in the Bible
에 이의를 제기하는 것은 어려운 일이다 」는 다음과 같은 구문으로 영어다운 표현이 가능하다. ex) It requires a daring thinks to …
(ANS) The first part of the Bible tells a story of how the world was created by God. Before the time of Darwin most people in the Western world believed that the world and all its creatures had been created in a period of one week, exactly as written in the Bible. It required a daring thinker to question such ancient ideas.

→ 서양의 미술관: a Western museum; the art museum in Europe
→ 전체적인 색조: the whole tone of color; the entire color tone
(ANS) When we see famous painting for the first time in art museums in Europe, we are sometimes surprised to find the whole tone of the color is rather dark.

It is (only) natural that those who go to United States for the first time should feel uneasy.
That you don't believe me is a great pity. = It is a great pity that you don't believe me.
위의 예처럼, natural을 비롯해서, necessary, important, essential, strange가 들어가는 경우 that 이하의 절은 for + 목적어 + to부정사로 바꿔 쓸 수 있다. ex) It is (only) natural for those who go to the United States for the first time to fell uneasy.
(ANS) It is (only) natural that those who go to the United States for the first time should fell uneasy (or anxious) about whether they can make themselves understood in English.

→ 「그러는 것이 ~을 덜게된다」는 그 앞의 내용을 it로 받아서 Then it will save~의 구문이 자연스럽다.「처음」은 for the first time.
→ 「누군가의 안내를 받다」는 have someone show you around 혹은 ask somebody to take you around.「시간과 노력」을 고지식하게 옮기면 time and energy이지만, time and trouble도 있다.
Will you go to the shop for me? It'll save me a trip.
(ANS 1) If you are going to London for the first time, you'd better have someone show you around the city. It'll save you a lot of time and trouble.
(ANS 2) If this is your first time to go to London, you'd better ask somebody to show you around the city. You can save a lot of time and energy that way.
(ANS 3) If this is your first visit to London you'd better get someone to guide you around the city. Then you can save yourself a lot of time and trouble.

It's the first time the collegiate sexual balance has been tipped to the feminine side since World War II.

Like a fledgling about to leave the nest for the first time, our youngest son is preparing to spend his first summer away from home.

Mr. Kim took a trip abroad for the first time.
True, he could study his subject directly,
but he regretted he could not use English, saying, "I should have learned to speak it before my departure."
Mr. Kim

Last Sunday I paid a visit to the zoo in Washington D.C.
I visited the monkeys first.
They were of various types from different parts of the world.
They were all very active, though they had been in their cages for a long time.
Then, we went to the places where the tigers and the lions were kept.
These animals did not seem to be active like the monkeys.
They were all lying down and looking at the visitors.

If you recognize your friend Jack feels depressed, what should you do?
First talk to him about it.
Try to discover what he is feeling.
If you can't persuade him to discuss the problem,
try an approach like "you remind me of the time when I was depressed."
This may keep him from feeling lonely.
Then, provide emotional support.
Please don't forget to listen sympathetically, point out the realities of the situations and always offer hope.

Throughout the short history of the exploration of space, several space stations have been put into orbits.
The first manned space station into orbit was the Soviet station Salyut 1.
It was in 1971.
Later, in 1986, the Soviet Union launched the Mir space station.
Mir stayed in orbit until March 23, 2001.
Over that time, 104 astronauts visited the station to stay for various lengths of time.
The person who stayed the longest in space so far is Russian astronaut Valeri Polyakov.
Working as the doctor aboard the station, he lived on Mir for 438 days without returning to the earth.

Because of my job, I was only able to sail during summer vacations,
so the trip around the world had to be broken up into small pieces.
The first section was from New York to Bermuda.
From there, I went to Venezuela, then to the Galapagos Islands and Tahiti.
I wandered all through the South Pacific, stopping for long visits in Fiji.
Occasionally, I would be joined by friends.
But most of the time, my only companions were dolphins and flying fish.
Sometimes a bird would stop by to hitchhike or for a little rest.

Frodo woke and found himself lying in bed.
At first he thought that he had slept late, after a long unpleasant dream that still hovered on the edge of memory.
Or perhaps he had been ill?
But the ceiling looked strange; it was flat, and it had dark beams richly carved.
He lay a little while longer looking at patches of sunlight on the wall, and listening to the sound of the waterfall.
“Where am I, and what is the time?” He said aloud to the ceiling.
“In the House of Elrond, and it is ten o'clock in the morning,” said a voice.
There was the old wizard, sitting in a chair by the open window.

Like most of William Shakespeare's plays, “Romeo and Juliet” is based on earlier sources,
which in this case go back to some stories popular in Italy in the late 1400s.
These stories were transformed into a poem in English by a poet named Brooke.
Today Brooke's poem has been forgotten, but Shakespeare's play lives on.
What makes Shakespeare's play live is its dramatic power and its remarkable language.
That language, beautiful as it is, may seem strange to modern readers,
especially to young readers encountering the play for the first time.
William Shakespeare

His first encounter with music was the time when he used to visit his uncle in Owensboro.
Further, he received a guitar from his mother when he was in Florida, after which he shut himself in his room and started learning guitar.
He lost his interest in studies and became more and more attracted to rock-n-roll.
He practiced playing guitar for hours and became very good at it.
Soon, his next aim was to join a rock group to quench his thirst for becoming a rock star.

Susie remembers the day when she was on the stage as a professional singer for the first time.
It was long after she had been discovered at a singing contest.
Despite her late debut, Susie is now popular among many Asians.
Thanks to the success of her debut album, My love, released two years ago, and recent television roles in Japan, she no longer feels unsure of her abilities.
She says, “I would give myself only 20 points for singing when I first started out. Now, after practicing in the recording studio every day, I give myself 90 points.”

On the first day, I and a co-worker went into the store after work.
Needless to say, everything looked good.
The store was pretty well stocked.
We both took mental notes of things we'd eventually get.
We wisely decided not to buy anything on that day.
We had plenty of time.
We walked around leisurely, eyeing different items.
I said to myself, “Here are some cheap computer games.
That pair of roller blades for $25 looks good, too.
That battery-powered electric shaver could sure come in handy.”
Yes, we were there to see the goods and to plan our purchases for the last day of the sale, when the prices would be really low.

Chef Walter Potenza owns three thriving Italian restaurants on Rhode Island.
He believes that his success is the product of lifetime education.
“When I opened my first restaurant, all of a sudden, my schooling and my knowledge came into play.
It made me an academic, a person who explored the food business,” Walter says.
“And the learning never stops,” he adds.
“Every time you read a book, you get ideas.
Then you introduce your ideas into your workplace.
You make more work for yourself, but you make that work better.
Chefs are made, not born.”

When other painful changes came along in later life, I always recalled my mother's words.
And recently, when a friend of mine was having a hard time dealing with the loss of his job, I gave him the same advice.
At first he couldn't accept it, but after a while, he came to see that this was one of the changes that happen to everyone.
In the end, losing a job motivated him to start his own business.

Yesterday Gary Roberts, age 60, entered a bank at 4:59 p.m., just one minute before the closing time.
Roberts told a bank employee, “I want to deposit five thousand dollars―all in pennies.”
He pointed to several heavy bags next to him.
The employee said it was too late to help him.
But Gary Roberts refused to leave the bank and the police were called.
This was not the first time he made trouble with the bank.
One day last year, he came into the bank ten times.
Each time he took out one dollar from his account.
Nobody knows why he does these things.

A small piece of wood from a campfire flies onto some dry grass and goes unnoticed.
Within the first few minutes this small fire may still be controllable, but in no time at all it's grown beyond the capability of the campers to put it out.
It could take hundreds of fire fighters many days to extinguish this fire.
This is exactly true of solving our everyday problems.
What happens to a little problem that doesn't get resolved when it's little?
It gets bigger and bigger until it becomes a real problem that's going to require a lot of time, energy, and resources to be solved.

The next time Christmas came, the pine tree was the first tree to be cut down.
The tree rejoiced to think it was at last to be taken and made beautiful with decorations.
The pine tree was taken by truck to a large, beautiful house and placed in a tub filled with sand.
There, people hung it with beautiful ornaments and fastened a lot of colored bulbs to its branches.
“If only they would light the bulbs,” thought the proud tree.
“How splendid I would look!”

The combine relieved farmers of much of the burden of harvest.
It enabled farmers to rescue crops which otherwise might have been lost.
The combine was first developed for use in countries where the climate was suitable for grain production.
It was said that the climate in such countries as the British Isles was totally unsuitable for its use.
However, this was not true.
Combines work in quite damp conditions.
The use of a combine resulted in a big reduction in the time and labor required to harvest a given crop
because only one or, at the most, two men were needed to operate the machine.
Other labor required to transport the grain to storage was not excessive.

The process of culture shock is so predictable that its stages have been systematized.
The first is the honeymoon stage, familiar to those of us who love to travel, but never stay in one place long enough to find out what follows.
In the honeymoon stage, the new country and its people seem delightful.
It almost feels more comfortable than home.
Everything is so different and charming, the people are so nice and the customs are so interesting.
Then the bloom comes off the rose.
People start to look shallow, selfish, and stupid.
The different ways of doing things do not seem interesting any more―just boring.
You start to feel exhausted all the time.
Culture shock has set in.

For a long time psychoanalysis was the only psychotherapy practiced in Western society, and it is based on the theories of Sigmund Freud.
According to Freud's views, psychological disturbances are due to anxiety about hidden conflicts in the unconscious parts of one's personality.
One job of the Psychoanalysts, therefore, is to help make the patients aware of the unconscious impulses and desires that are causing the anxiety.
Psychoanalysts believe that understanding these unconscious motives is very important.
If patients can have that kind of understanding, called insight, they have taken the first step toward gaining control over their behavior and freeing themselves of their problems.

New scientific research confirms that the prime time in life for learning a second language is from birth through age 10 or 12.
Newsweek calls it the “window of opportunity" for languages.
In Europe, kids commonly learn a second language at the same time as their first.
Why? Because it will never be as easy again.
The secret is to start early.
Now, the world famous British Broadcasting System brings Europe's long success with language learning to America.
The acclaimed BBS Language Course for Children uses the award-winning video character Muzy, compelling stories and delightful songs to bring language to life.
This could be the most important gift you ever give your child.

Several months later, the master took the boy to his first tournament.
Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches.
The third match proved to be more difficult, but the boy used his one move to win the match.
Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the finals.
This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced.
For a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched but he went on with his match.
When his opponent made a critical mistake, the boy used his move to pin him.
The boy had won the match and the tournament.
He was the champion.

Writing and editing are distinct processes.
Writing requires you to let the words flow as they come to you.
Editing requires you to stop and critically assess each word.
It is hard to stay in the creative flow when you are stopping after every word to criticize what you've just written.
If you try to write your first draft and edit it at the same time,
you're likely to lose your concentration and get caught up in details instead of delivering your message.
By the time you finish the first paragraph, you are likely to be frustrated and unable to remember what you originally intended to say.

Arthur Ashe was the first African American to become a world tennis champion.
He was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1943.
His father supervised the tennis courts in a park near their home.
As a young boy, Arthur liked to watch the tennis players.
Ron Clarity, one of the players, taught Arthur how to play tennis.
Arthur's dream was to join the U.S. Davis Cup Tennis Team.
But, in Richmond, at that time, most tennis courts were for white people only, and all the tennis officials were white.
They did not encourage Arthur to play.
However, he did not let them stop him from playing.
Arthur Ashe

On a ten-point scale, if I am at level two in any field, and desire to move to level five, I must first take the step toward level three.
"A thousand-mile journey begins with the first step" and can only be taken one step at a time.

The following suggestions may be helpful in dealing with identical twins.
First, remember that twins are individuals.
On holidays and birthdays, they deserve separate gifts, cards and recognition.
Second, make a genuine effort to tell twins apart.
Even though they may look very much alike, there are some distinguishing features that you can identify if you are willing to try.
Last but not least, don't assume that twins like the same things, or that they want to be together all the time.
Spending time with each twin separately will help you get to know them as individuals and make telling them apart easier.

If you ask most people to explain why they like someone when they first meet, they'll tell you it's because of the person's personality, intelligence, or sense of humor.
But they're probably wrong.
The characteristic that most impresses people when meeting for the first time is physical appearance.
Although it may seem unfair, attractive people are frequently preferred over less attractive ones.

She had just begun an intense, love-at-first-sight relationship, only to have her lover go off to Europe three weeks later.
For seven tortured weeks she was plagued with doubts.
What if he decided he didn't love her after all?
What if he met someone else during his trip?
What if he didn't call her as soon as he returned?
Full of all these what-ifs, my friend's brain was about to short-circuit, until a wise friend of hers put things in perspective.
"Why worry? Whatever he does, he does.
Remember: You don't know until you know."
My friend stood there, awestruck by the brilliant simplicity of this observation.
There was really nothing she could do about the situation, after all.
And worrying about something before it actually happened suddenly came into focus as the waste of time and energy that it is.
In an instant, it seemed, she was free of the problem, able to settle back and take each day at a time until her lover returned, at which point things progressed just as beautifully as she could have hoped and her fears turned out to be groundless after all.

DEAR ABBY: I'm 22, with two children, ages 3 and 4.
I'm divorced for the second time.
I have been dating a man who is 52 years old.
He is financially very well-off and wants to marry me.
He treats me very well and cares for my children.
Abby, do you think marriage between a 52-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman could ever work out?
I like him a lot, but I am not what you would call madly in love with him.
I was madly in love with my first two husbands, and they both treated me like dirt.
I haven't made any promises yet, and this man is not pressuring me, but I need your advice.
What do you think it takes to make a marriage work ?
TWO-TIME LOSER
DEAR T.T.L.: Don't marry anyone while you are still seeking advice.
All that is necessary for a marriage to succeed is for two people to really
need each other.

I shall never forget the disgust I felt one day in the United States when I
heard quoted for the first time the well known words of an American soldier, "My
country, right or wrong."

Reagan resumed the routine of the Presidency by slow degrees, venturing
down to his desk for the first time after the surgery and appearing at a Cabinet
meeting - to a long standing ovation.

One Wall Street adage has it that if a person has not made his first
million dollars by the time he is 30, he is never going to make it.

Possibly for the first time, a soccer match has been delayed by laughter.
Five thousand Athenian soccer fans, awaiting the start of an exhibition match
between a Greek team and a Chinese team last year, rose and stood in respectful
silence as what they took to be the Chinese national anthem reverberated from
the stadium's loudspeakers. The Chinese team on the field, observing all those
standing Greeks, also came to polite attention, assuming that the Greek anthem
was being played.
Then a lilting female voice rose above the unfamiliar music - to extol the
virtues of a local toothpaste.

For the first time, public-opinion polls show that the average U.S. citizen
is not at all sure that his children's lot will be better than or even as
good as his own.

A computer salesman dies and meets St. Peter at the Pearly Gates.
St. Peter tells the salesman that he can choose between heaven and hell.
First he shows the man heaven, where people in white robes play harps
and float around. "Dull," says the salesman.
Next, St. Peter shows him hell: toga parties, good food and wine,
and people looking as though they're having a fine time.
"I'll take hell," he says.
He enters the gates of hell and is immediately set upon by a dozen
demons, who poke him with pitchforks.
"Hey," the salesman demands as Satan walks past, "what happened to the
party I saw going on?"
"Ah," Satan replies. "You must have seen our demo."

All great books contain boring portions, and all great lives have
contained uninteresting stretches. Imagine a modern publisher confronted
with the Old Testament as a new manuscript submitted to him for the
first time. It is not difficult to think what his comments would be,
for example, on the genealogists.
"Mr. dear sir," he would say, "this chapter lacks pep; you can't expect
your reader to be interested in a mere string of proper names of persons
about whom you tell him so little. You have begun your story, I will
admit, in fine style, and at first I was very favorably impressed, but
you have altogether too much wish to tell it all. Pick out the high
lights, take out the superfluous matter, and bring me back your
manuscript when you have reduced it to a reasonable length."

I have seen a boy two years old, who had been kept in London, taken out
for the first time to walk in green country. The season was winter, and
everything was wet and muddy. To the adult eye there was nothing to
cause delight, but in the boy there sprang up a strange ecstasy; he
kneeled in the wet ground and put his face in the grass, and gave
utterance to half-articulate cries of delight. The joy that he was
