Lincoln High

Unless we find a witness to corroborate your evidence, it will not stand up in court.

The ability to speak well and easily before a group is a real asset in life.
It is also a skill that you can get through practice.
You will find that it is a good idea to speak
whenever you can have an opportunity of speaking and to pay careful attention to the criticisms you receive.
The more speeches you make, the better you will be able to put your ideas into words and to face an audience.

They were all meeting in front of the main entrance of the school.
Bob was the last to arrive.
As soon as Mr. Van, the chemistry teacher, checked the names on the list, they were on their way.
It was almost noon when they arrived at their destination, the Coral Mountains.
Here they were expected to find some new specimens to bring back and study.
They soon split up into groups of four, each group taking a different path.
Bob

When elephants want to eat, their long noses help.
They use their trunks to pull down the branches and pull off the fruit and leaves.
With their long noses, elephants put food into their mouths.
An elephant can give itself a bath with its trunk.
It takes water in through its nose.
Out the water comes, all over the elephant's body.
Elephants, however, can't always find clean water.
Then they take a mud bath.
The trunk is used to put on mud.
When the elephant has a cut, the cool mud makes the cut feel better.

Yesterday I went to a bookstore to buy a book about computers.
I asked a clerk where they had books about computers.
She said that they were on the second floor.
I was surprised that there were a large number of books.
It took me a long time to find one that was for beginners like me.

If you ever get lost in a forest, go to a tree.
It can help you find your way out.
Trees which grow in forests show where north and south are.
For instance, leaves and branches tend to grow more thickly on the south side of a tree.
And the top of a tree bends toward the south.
The color of the bark is brighter on the south side.
If you know which way is south, then you also know that north is in the opposite direction.

A fundamental change is happening in entertainment around the world.
People are relying more and more on their televisions and CD players for their entertainment.
The problem is that people want to choose what they do and when and where they do it.
This makes home-based entertainment more attractive than live performances.
The biggest theaters located in large cities find they have to focus on glamorous productions with top stars to attract the crowds.
Meanwhile, many small and medium-sized arts organizations face growing financial pressures.

Suppose you put some bean seeds in water overnight and let other bean seeds stay dry.
You will find that only the seeds in water will swell and get soft, and the covering of these seeds will split open.
What can happen to these seeds now?
Once a seed absorbs water, the tiny plant inside it can start to grow.
It uses food stored in the seed to grow.
Suppose you remove the stored food, which is found in the bean, from a very young bean plant.
It stops growing.
It seems that seeds need food and water to grow.

If you were indeed to build a house, you would find it helpful to have a set of directions to guide you in its construction.
You would need to know, for example, where the walls and support beams should be placed.
When building the house of life, we also rely on a blueprint to guide us in its construction.
If you don't have such a blueprint, your life goals will constantly shift from situation to situation and you are bound to fail.
So decide what you need to do to make your dreams come true.
If you do, you'll have clear direction throughout your life.

Planning is important, but it is action that gets things done.
If you just plan to lose weight, or just plan to start a business, it never happens.
The way to make things happen is to take action.
Find something you can do right now, today, and that will bring you closer to your goal.
Don't put it off until the time is right.
No matter how unimportant your action may seem, it makes you start in the right direction.
Continue taking action every day and you start to gain momentum.

In mystery books and movies, fingerprints play a big role.
The police get them from a gun left by the thief.
Then, soon the thief is in jail.
But in real life, the police rarely get prints from guns.
First of all, a smart thief won't leave his gun where it can be found.
And, even if he did, the gun doesn't leave good prints.
That is because it is usually oily.
Finally, anyone who fires a gun holds it tightly.
That also blurs the prints.
So real-life detectives have to find other kinds of clues.

count
1. to say or name the numbers in order: Count to 20 and then open your eyes.
2. to have value or importance: It doesn't count whether he comes or not.
3. to consider (sb or sth) to be: I count it a great honor to serve you.
4. to find the total of: Don't forget to count your change.

All of the wild Giant Pandas in the world live in western China.
They are found in dense bamboo forests high up in the mountains.
The forests are so dense that it has always been hard for people to find out much about wild pandas.
The pandas stay hidden in the forest most of the time, where people can't even see them.
In many ways, the Giant Panda is still a mysterious animal.
Nobody is really sure what kind of animal they are.
Some scientists say that the Giant Panda is a member of the raccoon family.
But others claim that it belongs to the bear family.
And a third group is sure that it doesn't belong to either family.

Well, as in most work situations, we have a problem here with communication.
That is, most managers do not want to hear people complain, and most employees are afraid to come right out and say what they feel.
They usually won't say what they like or don't like.
They may complain to each other during lunch or after work, but they do not complain directly to the manager.
It is important, however, for a manager to find out if he or she is doing a good job.
One way to do this is to give employees a chance to talk.
Employees need an opportunity to say what is wrong, what they don't like about the work situation, and what they would change to make their work better.

Reporter : What is the main role of your organization?
Mr. Kim : We gather opinions and requests from people and deliver them to the politicians.
And when we find some politicians not doing their jobs properly, we push them to do their best to fulfill their duties.
Reporter : Why did you choose to work here in Seoul?
Mr. Kim : Well, we talked over this issue for a long time.
And most of the members agreed that it would be better to have our office in the center of political power.
The decision was right and we'll stay here for a while.

You'll find the unknown word comes again, perhaps several times, and by the end of the chapter you'll have guessed its meaning.
That's how we learn the meaning of words in our own language, isn't it?
When I'm telling a story to children, they seldom stop to ask what a word means.
Even when they read, they don't run for the dictionary every time they see an unknown word.
When I read my New York Times these days I often find articles about space programs.
There are sometimes words I don't know ―and some of them are so new that they're not yet in the dictionaries.
But I'm slowly beginning to understand what some of the words mean ― simply by meeting them so often.

After Germany and Austria lost World War Ⅰ, inflation ruined their economies.
The governments printed huge quantities of paper money.
Naturally, the more they issued, the more worthless it became.
By 1922, the money wasn't even worth the paper on which it was printed.
A clever Swiss soap maker bought up all the Austrian money that he could find.
He realized that it was just the right size needed to wrap his soap.
He printed the name of the soap on the blank side.
Then, he put his money-wrapped soap on the market and waited.
Just as he had hoped, his soap sales escalated.
Many buyers bought the soap, hoping that someday the “wrappers” would be worth just as much as they were before the war.

Most people are afraid of sharks, but they usually do not know very much about them.
Sharks do not have ears.
However, they hear sounds and movements in the water.
Any sound or movement makes the water vibrate.
Sharks can feel these vibrations, and they help the sharks find food.
Sharks use their large eyes to find food, too.
Scientists want to learn more about sharks for several reasons.
For example, cancer is very common in many animals, including people.
However, it is rare in sharks.
Scientists want to find out why sharks almost never get cancer.
Maybe this information can help people prevent cancer, too.

An English lady was to stay with a friend in the country.
At Liverpool Street Station in London, she bought a magazine and got on the train.
Then she noticed that she had lost her ring, a treasured present from her mother.
The train was about to leave.
She could not find the ring.
Then a porter came up and said that he would try to find it for her.
The lady asked him to phone her if he found it.
But she was worried.
When she arrived at her friend's house, she received a call.
The ring was found.
Someone had left it with the shopkeeper.
Two days later, she received the ring.
She learned that there were people who believed that “A kindness is never lost.”

What is wrong with this view? It is certain that technology has an important effect on our lives.
But to suggest that it determines how we live can easily be shown to be wrong.
If you are given a computer, you can send harmful messages to other people, but you don't have to.
How you act will depend on the social circumstances in which you find yourself.
Technology enables us to do things but it does not force us to.
Its influence on society depends on the social circumstances in which it is made available.

Is it possible to measure beauty?
Well, the ancient Greeks believed that all beauty could be explained with math and used a system to find what they called the “Golden Ratio.”
They found it by drawing lines between key points of a beautiful object and making calculations.
They believed that all beautiful things share the same ratio.
This idea is still popular today.
An American researcher carefully measured thousands of faces and was able to produce a “Universal Beauty Mask” based on this Golden Ratio.
According to him, how closely the mask fits can show how beautiful you are.

Although restrictions against opening adoption files make the search much harder,
they do not necessarily discourage those adoptees who want to discover who their biological parents are.
Those men and women who are desperate to find what they want to know will, if they can afford it, hire a detective to find out.
If not, some of them are willing to devote all their time and energy to finding more about their origins.

Alice got up late this morning and hurriedly went out of her apartment.
Realizing that the elevator was not working, she walked down 10 floors.
When she reached her car, it occurred to her that she might have forgotten to turn off the gas range.
With a sigh, she climbed breathlessly up the stairs, only to find that the range had been turned off.
It goes without saying that she was blamed by her boss for not being on time.

I know that my apple trees bend over the fence and seem to look down at your children with interest.
And I also know that it is only natural that your children should return that interest by picking the apples that hang over your side of the fence.
But, to be plain with you, I am tired of seeing your children, day after day, tear the branches off the side of every one of my apple trees, and leave my trees looking as though a battle had been fought on one side of them.
I am even more tired of waking these fine autumn mornings to find even the apples on my side of the fence much decreased in number.

As I walked home one freezing day, I stumbled on a wallet someone had lost in the street.
I picked it up and looked inside to find some identification so I could call the owner.
But the wallet contained only three dollars and a crumpled letter that seemed to have been there for years.
The envelope was worn and the only thing that I could read was the return address.
I started to open the letter, hoping to find some clue.
Then I saw the dateline and found that the letter had been written almost ten years before.

When you're having a conversation with someone and he is angry, listen patiently.
Once you get impatient and start arguing, your position hardens, the other person's position hardens, and it becomes impossible to find a mutually agreeable solution to the issues being discussed.
So if you don't want to get into an argument, stay calm and say nothing, though you'll certainly be tempted to interrupt and respond to the person's statements.
Within a few minutes the person will use up all of his anger and energy and talk himself out.
Now that he has calmed down, you can have an intelligent conversation.

It is our hope that any adult or teenager who picks up this book will find his or her “child heart” touched, and hopefully, reawakened.
We truly believe that within each and everyone of us, there is a piece of our heart and soul that we have hidden
― a piece of us that perhaps still believes that there is a Santa Claus, and that good will always prevail over evil.
On a very deep level we all want to be loved, accepted, encouraged and supported, no matter what our age.
From our hearts to your hearts, we presents this book.
May kids reign forever!

While we're traveling, we normally spend only a second looking at everyday objects.
The day races past us without our really being aware of it.
The average time we spend looking at things has been steadily decreasing during the last fifty years.
We say that the world is going faster, but that might be because we are perceiving it faster.
Just try looking at objects for at least five seconds.
You can do this when you're walking or looking out of the car.
You'll find that five seconds is a long time.
This slight increase in the time we take to observe things can increase our passion for life and the quality of life.

If anyone, including the police, decides to drive down High Point Street on any summer night, he will find it too dangerous to pass.
The potholes have been fixed, but the speeding motorbikers are turning the narrow street into a race track as they try to outrun each other.
The bikers are roaring along the High Point Street without any police enforcement.
The police don't seem to have seen any reason to slow down the speeding motorcycles racing through the street.
It seems like a waiting game: either this summer will end without anyone getting injured, or the speeding bikes will cause a fatal accident.
There is a lot of time left in the summer season.
The city police must take immediate action for our safety.

The process of culture shock is so predictable that its stages have been systematized.
The first is the honeymoon stage, familiar to those of us who love to travel, but never stay in one place long enough to find out what follows.
In the honeymoon stage, the new country and its people seem delightful.
It almost feels more comfortable than home.
Everything is so different and charming, the people are so nice and the customs are so interesting.
Then the bloom comes off the rose.
People start to look shallow, selfish, and stupid.
The different ways of doing things do not seem interesting any more―just boring.
You start to feel exhausted all the time.
Culture shock has set in.

Are you preparing for a big test?
If so, you may want to go play some basketball in between hitting the books.
Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development.
According to a doctor's research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels in the brain stronger and more fully developed.
She claims this allows people who exercise to concentrate better.

Language never stands still.
Every language, until it ceases to be spoken at all, is in a state of continual change.
The English which we speak and write is not the same English that was spoken and written by our grandfathers.
Nor was their English precisely like that of Queen Elizabeth‘s time.
The farther back we go, the less familiar we find ourselves with the speech of our ancestors.
So finally we reach a kind of English that is quite strange to us, as if it were a foreign tongue.

It is a great honor for me to present a woman who I'm sure many of you have admired over the years.
She began her impressive work at Clark College.
There she majored in biology and graduated at the top of her class.
From there she went on to Adams Medical School, one of the finest medical research institutions in the nation,
where she first began to show an interest in genetic technology.
After graduating from Adams, again with honors, she continued to work in the field of genetics at the advanced think tank.
You will not find a finer research doctor anywhere in the world.
So, without any further delay, it is my pleasure to present Dr.
Brenda Walsh.

One year ago, the advertising industry was still struggling to find its feet following the slump it entered in 2001, when the bursting of the technology bubble brought about an abrupt collapse in ad spending.
In 2002 and 2003 it began slowly to grow again.
So worldwide advertising expenditure grew by almost 7% in 2004.
The ad market in 2004 was boosted by some special factors, such as the presidential election in America and the Olympics.
Yet a media specialist predicts ad spending will grow by around 6% in 2005.

If you take a closer look at your life, you'll find that you have a life purpose you've been trying to carry out.
For some people, their purpose may be as simple as raising a family or being a good friend or emotionally encouraging others.
These purposes may sound simple or insignificant, but consider how they can be a pleasure to many other lives.
Your life purpose is eventually what benefits you and others as well.
I mean, if you do something that gives you a better life and makes you feel better, it's for the benefit of all.
Sometimes, what you are aiming at may seem like an unimportant detail, but it does good to the whole.

Most of the middle-school texts are full of sidebars, boxes, and other presumably eye-catching special features bearing such titles as
“Flex Your Brain!”, “EXPLORE!”, “Find Out!”, and “Minds On!”
The claim is often made that with today's generation of television-reared children, books need to offer all sorts of bright, short, attention-getting features.
But several studies show the opposite: Some children try to read through a whole page from top to bottom as if it were a “traditional” text and become confused by the sudden jumps into sidebar material and captions.
Others look at the picture captions but never read the text.
Still others read the text but never read the feature titles.

For most people , choosing a career isn't easy,
yet it is one of the most important decisions you will make in your life.
Find the right career, and you will be happy and successful.
Find the wrong career, and you may be unhappy and unsuccessful.
It pays, therefore, to explore our choice of occupation from every angle, collect as much information as you can,
actually try different kinds of work before making up your mind.
Above all, evaluate yourself.
Be sure you know your own interests and talents.

Traveling around the country I find that more and more people have an urge to pry into such difficult subjects as science, philosophy, religion and political theory.
More often than not, however, this urge soon dries up.
People find that the book which they open with high hopes of enlightenment turns out to be beyond their grasp.
Actually, any book intended for the general reader can be understood if you approach it in the right way.
What is the right approach?
The answer lies in one important rule of reading.
You should read a book through superficially before you try to master it.

When I stopped at the liquor store to buy some champagne for a wedding gift, the clerk asked to see my ID.
"But I'm twenty-nine years old," I protested.
"I can show you pictures of my three sons to prove it."
"They could be your nephews," she replied, unimpressed.
"How about a driver's license?"
Rummaging through my purse, I took out two rubber worms, a matchbox car, a set of baby keys, an odd sock, a smashed pack of bubble gum and a ball.
But I couldn't find my license.
"Forget it," the clerk said suddenly.
"Only a mother of three boys would have that collection in her purse!"

Last year, my husband was told by a resident physician at a highly respected teaching hospital that he would be called if anything "out of the ordinary" showed up.
He heard nothing and assumed that everything was OK.
Last week, he had annual checkup, and his doctor asked, "Why didn't you call to find out about the changes in your cells?"
The answer was, of course, "I didn't know about it."

I'm one of those fools who is afraid to fly, but I find myself doing a lot of it because it's vital to my business.

Flying for me is so much easier when I get a captain who talks during the flight.
I find it comforting just to hear his voice.
He tells us where we are and identifies places of interest.
He also lets us know when the ride will get a little bumpy and tells us not to worry about it.

There is one thing which we do every time we read, whether we are aware of it or not: we come into contact with the personality of the writer.
We enlarge our acquaintance, and by so doing we enter farther into life, and however little we may meant to, we enlarge our own personality, at least if the writer whose book we are reading himself possesses a personality of any value at all.
Any book of which we say to ourselves when we have done with it, "That is a good book", we find to be so by virtue of the personality which we have been in contact with: we say so, possibly, because we find that our own self has been affected, even though only for a while.

Teacher: Good for You.
I'm not against using bicycles.
Actually, I'm for it.
I still find your idea out of the question, though.
What I'm saying is we can't expect everyone to bike to work or school.

Here are the facts and figures: Cloth diapers are $10 per dozen.
Seven dozen will last through two babies for a one-time cost of $70.
The cheapest disposable diapers we could find were 30 cents apiece.
At an average of 10 diapers a day (more for newborns, fewer for older babies), it comes to $3 a day, or $90 a month ―a whopping $1,080 a year.

Most offices, by the very nature of their structure and function, are geared to stability or slow change.
Accelerated change of the kind that a computer brings is likely to prove disrupting and disturbing.
This is because people in stable organizations tend to expect a steady continuation of existing arrangements, and because departments unaccustomed to change frequently find they have become too inflexible to assimilate it without stress.
Social as well as technical factors are therefore highly relevant to a successful adaptation to new techniques.

Twenty years ago, I returned from Vietnam to find that my brother had spent every check I had sent home.
He was supposed to be putting my money in a savings account, and it never dawned on me that he would be doing anything else with my checks.
I trusted him completely and never asked for proof of any kind.

Imagine what it would be like to wake up and find yourself in a metal box.
This is what happened to a man in South Africa who had been in a car accident.
The doctors thought he was dead, so he was put in the metal box.
He remained there, unconscious, for two days.
Then, he woke up and shouted for help.
The people who heard him were at first somewhat frightened.
But then they realized that he was alive and they let him out of the box.
He was happy to be alive and free.
However, his happiness did not last long.
His girlfriend refused to see him because she did not believe that he was really alive.
She said he was a ghost who came back from the dead to frighten her.

Don't be surprised if you start hearing the term "Information literacy" a lot.
The digital revolution means that sooner or later students and adults are going to need an entirely new set of skills: how to get information, where to find it, and how to use it.
Becoming good at handling information is going to be one of the most important skills of the twenty-first century, not just in school but in the real world.
