Driving fast last Monday, I was pulled over by a police officer.

He handed me back my license, “Actually, math was never my favourite subject. Please slow down.”

◆ Sport and Game
우리는 스포츠 경기로 이루어진 가장 큰 행사인 경기를 올림픽 게임이라 부릅니다.
그렇다면 Game과 Sport를 특별히 구분해서 사용하는 이유가 있을까요?
일반적으로 Sport라고 할 때는 육체적 능력을 기반으로 고도의 숙련된 기술을 요하는
활동을 말합니다. Sport는 전통적의미로는 아래의 보기와 같이 공을 이용한 실외운동을
말합니다. 물론 지금은 그 밖의 운동도 지칭하게 되었지만요.
rugby, cricket, football, basketball, hockey, baseball, netball, tennis, table tennis,
squash, badminton, volleyball, golf, motor racing, cycling, skiing, running, swimming
어쨌든 우리가 Game에 관하여 말할 때는 두 팀이나 두 개인이 서로 맞붙어서 하는 것을 의미하지요.
이러한 이유에서 일단 우리는 올림픽 게임이라 부르는 것입니다.
'Do you fancy a game of golf this afternoon?'
The game (or match 특별히 공으로 하는 게임은 match라고 대신 지칭할 수 있음)

그리고, Sports와 차별하여 Game은 단순히 운동뿐만 아니라, 기술, 지식, 또는 퍼즐을 풀어 나가는 활동을 총칭하는 말로써
상대자들에 맞서서 이기기 위한 찬스를 요하는 활동을 지칭하기도 합니다.
예를 들면, 'word games', 'card games', 'computer games' and games like chess, backgammon, dominoes, darts, snooker, mahjong and Monopoly' 이러한 것은 육체적 능력이나 기술이 필요 없는 것이지만 서로 이기려고 하는 상대를 가진 것들이지요.
