(ANS) Many nations have harvest festivals and Thanksgiving days, while many other cultures observe the veneration of ancestors, but no one has anything quite like the Korean Chusok. Historians tell us that the Chusok festival originated during the reign of the third king of the Silla Kingdom nearly 2,000 years ago. Chusok involves many things. It is an offering of thanks to heaven for the harvest, an appeal for the good fortune of another harvest in the next year, and an offering of sacrifices to one's family ancestors for all they did for the clan and family. In addition, of course, there are family gathering, much hearty eating, and such activities as the circle dance in the light of the full harvest moon.
The Korean National Red Cross (KNRC) has made a timely
proposal to its North Korean counterpart to hold talks to discuss
reunions of dispersed family member and measures to help flood
victims in the North. Proposing this, KNRC president Kang Young-hoon
said Monday that the presidents or vice presidents of the South and
North Korean Red Cross societies could meet any time and any place
that was agreeable to the North.
대한 적십자사는 북한 적십자사에게 이산가족의 상봉과 북한의 홍수 피해
를 도울 방안을 논의하기 위한 회담을 열자는 시의 적절한 제안을 하였다.
이러한 제안을 월요일에 보내면서, 대한 적십자사의 강영훈총재는 남북한
적십자사의 총재나 부총재가 북한이 원하는 어느 시기 어느 장소에서라도
만날 수 있다고 말했다.

force in 1992. They include accords on nonaggression, reconciliation,
exchanges and cooperation. First of all, the North is called on to realize
the reunion of separated family members by abiding by the
inter-Korean agreements.
