In the speed of its execution, the righting of a tumbling cat resembles
a magician's trick. The gyrations of the cat in midair are too fast for
the human eye to follow, so the process is obscured. Either the eye must
be speeded up, or the cat's fall slowed down for the phenomenon to be
observed. A century ago the former was accomplished by means of

bars라는 표현이 생소하더라도 나중에 반복돼 나오는 to be
locked down 을 보면 "갇히다"라는 뜻임을 쉽게 알 수 있습니다.
감금 생활을 하게 된다는 표현을 두개 건진 것이지요. 　
같은 표현을 피하고 다양한 표현을 쓰는 대표적인 예가 수치의
등락을 나타내는 기사입니다. 예를 들어 다음과 같이 등락을
나타내는 두 문장이 있다고 생각해보지요.
A. Wheat production is expected to diminish by three percent
this year.
B. World trade of cereals is expected to increase by 1.4
million tons to 202 million tons, especially trading in rice,
the report said.
A의 경우는 밀 생산이 줄어드는 걸 뜻합니다. Diminish라는
단어가 한번 나왔으니 다른 생산 품목 수치도 줄어든다면 뒤에
이어질 문장에는 다른 표현이 나오겠지요? 계속 "줄어들 것이다,"
"줄어들 것이다" 할 수는 없으니까. 대부분, fall, drop,
decrease, go down 등을 쓰고, 좀 심할 경우는 nosedive 같은
표현도 쓰지요.
B의 경우는 수치가 올라가고 있습니다. Increase가 나왔으니 또
쓰지 않겠지요. Jump, shoot up, grow, swell, go up 등을 쓸
겁니다.
물론, 동사 표현만 그런 건 아닙니다. 요즘 IMF 시대라 그런지
"위기"라는 말을 너무 많이 쓰지요. 금융 위기, 경제 위기, 산업
위기 등등. 위기도 너무 위기 위기 거리면 참 듣기 싫습니다.
그래서 crisis만 쓰는 것이 아니라, debacle, plight, crunch,
turmoil 등 다양하게 쓰지요.

꿀리지 않겠지요?
순위 이동하는 걸 "미끄러졌다(slide), 움직였다(move), 굴러
떨어졌다 (topple), 추락했다(fall)"로 표현하고 있습니다.
얼마나 순위가 움직였는 지도 잘 보세요. 언뜻 뜻을 모를만한게
SPOT과 RUNG 일 겁니다. SPOT은 "위치 또는 자리"를 뜻하고,
RUNG은 사다리의 가로 막대를 말합니다. 그래서 단계를 뜻하지요.
이걸 모른다고 의미 파악이 안될리가 없습니다. 다른 문장에서
이미 SPOT과 RUNG은 "PLACE"의 뜻이라는 게 나타나 있으니까요.
다시 말해, 모르는 표현이 나와도 전후 문맥으로 얼마든지 추정이
가능하다는 걸 보여주는 겁니다.
간단한 예를 몇개만 살펴봤지만 반복을 싫어하는 영어의 특징을
장점으로 활용할 수 있는 계기가 됐으면 좋겠네요.

기차역에 철도의 노선을 바꾸는 데 사용하는 포인트 또는 전철기라고 불리
는 장치가 있는데 영어로는 switch라고 한다. 기차가 진입하고 있는데 철도
원이 switch를 움켜잡고 잠들어 버렸다면 큰일이 아닐 수 없다. 'fall asl
eep at the switch'라는 표현이 있는데 「근무를 소홀히 하다」라는 의미를
가진다.
A:What happened to you? You're all black. Did you put on some mud pa
ck or something?
B:No way. We were tearing down an old building. Today we decided to
blow up the building with dynamite.
A:So?
B:The foreman was supposed to give us signals so we could get away f
rom the building before he pushed the button.
A:Didn't he give you the signals?
B:Of course he did, but I guess he fell asleep at the switch, and ga
ve us the signals too late.
A:You had a narrow escape, right?
B:Yeah. Now that we blew up the building I'll blow his head off.
A:무슨 일 있었나? 자네는 온통 깜장이야. 머드팩이라도 했나?
B:천만에. 낡은 건물을 철거하고 있었다네. 오늘은 다이너마이트로 건물을
파괴시키기로 되었지 뭔가.
A:그래서?
B근로반장이 스위치를 누르기 전에 우리가 건물을 벗어나 있도록 신호를
해주기로 되었었다네.
A:그 사람이 그럼 신호를 안 해주었나?
B:해주기는 했는데. 내 생각에 그 사람이 소홀해서 늦게 신호를 해준 것
같아.
A:가까스로 죽음을 면했군?
B:그래. 이제 건물을 날려버렸으니까 가서 그 사람을 두들겨줘야겠어.

미국에서는 우리나라의 '자장, 자장' 하는 것에 대한 특별한 표
현은 없고요, 우리 나라에서는 엄마들이 아이를 토닥거리면서 '자장~
자장!' 하는 것과는 달리 미국에서는 엄마들이 안거나 요람에 눕힌 채
약간 흔들면서 자장가인 lullaby를 불러주게 되지요. 물론 자장가의
종류는 굉장히 다양하지요. 그 가운데에서도 가장 대표적인 lullaby가
운데 rock a by baby 라는 곡이 있습니다. 가사는 다음과 같습니다.

나무 꼭대기에 있는 아가야 잘 자라
