A young lady dismissed the young man to whom she was engaged because he drank.
A few days after she had told him she would never speak to him again, a little
boy brought a note from the wretched young man.
The note read this: "Faithless, yet still beloved Fanny! My sufferings are
more than I can bear. I cannot live without your love. I have therefore just
taken poison, the effect of which I am now beginning to feel. When you read
these lines, I shall have joined the great majority. See that I am decently
buried, and shed a silent tear over my tomb in remembrance of the days gone
by―Your dead George."
When the young lady had finished reading the note, she asked the boy who had
brought it what he was waiting for.
"The gentleman who sent it told me to wait for an answer," was the reply.

그녀가 다시는 그와 이야기하지 않겠다고 말한 후 며칠이 지났을 때, 어떤 작은
소년이 그 불쌍한 청년이 보내 쪽지를 가져왔다.
그 쪽지에는 이렇게 쓰여있었다. "의리는 없지만 여전히 사랑스런 패니! 나의
고통은 견딜 수 없을 정도요. 당신의 사랑없이 살 수가 없소. 그래서 나는 방금
독약을 먹었는데 이제 효력이 느껴지고 있소. 당신이 이 글을 읽고 있을 때,
나는 저승으로 갔을 거요. 나를 잘 묻어주고 옛정을 생각해서 내 무덤에 조용히
눈물 한 방울을 흘려주오. 저 세상 사람이 된 당신의 죠지."
쪽지를 다 읽고 난 젊은 여자는 편지를 가져온 소년에게 무엇을 기다리고 있냐고
물었다.
"그것을 보낸 분이 답장을 받아오라고 했어요."라는 것이 대답이었다.
