In the traditional Korean housing '사랑방' was the main room for
the head man of the household where he often studied and received
guests.
전통 한옥집에서 사랑방은 집안의 가장 어른이 책을 보기도 하고 손님
을 맞이하는 방이기도 하지요.
'사랑방' was usually furnished with a low writing table, bookshe-
lves, stationary chests, and a smoking tray.
사랑방에는 주로 앉아서 읽은 책상, 책꽂이, 필기 도구 상자, 그리고
담배함이 구비되었습니다.
It was often located right next to a garden so that he could have
a nice view from his writing table.
사랑방은 주로 정원 바로 옆에 위치해서 책을 보는 사람들이 그의 방
에서 아주 좋은 전경을 즐길수가 있지요.
'안방'was the main room for the head woman of the household where
she slept in and ran the household.
안방은 집안의 여주인이 집 안에서 잠을 자거나 집안일을 처리하는 방
이지요.
It was located towards the center of all living quarters and the
rest of the household recognized this room as the place of central
authority.
안방은 모든 주거 공간에 중앙에 위치했고 나머지 온 집안 식구들은
이 공간을 집안의 주된 영향력을 가진 곳으로 인식을 했습니다.
This central room was the most lavishly decoreted by various chests
such as '이층장' and '삼층장' this means two and three story
clothing chests respectively.
중앙에 위치한 방은 이층장과 삼층장과 같이 다양한 장들로 가장 화려
하게 장식이 되어 있습니다.
These chests were of very high quality and in most cases the num-
ber, size and the elaborateness of these chests reflected how
well they were off in the society.
이런 장들은 대부분의 경우 아주 품질이 좋았고 장의 개수, 크기, 그
리고 그 화려함의 정도는 사회적으로 그들이 얼마나 부유한지를 보여
줬습니다.
'대청' was the hall that connected the '안방' to the rest of the
rooms.
대청은 안방을 나머지 방들과 연결시켜 주는 방이었습니다.
These wooden floored halls not only served as a link between roo-
ms but it also served as a pantry.
나무 바닥으로 된 대청은 방들을 연결 시켜주는 연결뿐 아니라 식품저
장고의 역할도 했습니다.
Family meetings ceremonies and other family events were held at
'대청.'
가족 모임, 의식, 다른 행사들도 대청에서 열렸지요.
Finally dining rooms were not a part of traditional Korean resid-
ences. There did not exist a special quarter where all the family
member gathered to dine around a dining table.
마지막으로 식당방은 전통적인 한국가옥에 포함되어 있지 않지요. 가
족이 식탁에 둘러앉아 식사를 하는 특별한 공간이 없었기 때문이지요
Instead the food was carried to the individual rooms on a low ta-
ble from the '부엌' or the kitchen.
그 대신에 음식은 부엌에서 상위에 올려져서 각 개인의 방에 들여갔지
요.
As one can imagine this was not an easy task as the cook not only
had to prepare the food but also prepare a '상' and carry it to
each room of a household.
짐작하시듯이 요리하는 사람이 음식을 장만할 뿐만 아니라 음식을 차
려가지고 가족의 방까지 가져다 주는 것이 쉬운 것은 아닙니다.
The traditional Korean house reflected the traditional Korean fa-
mily.
전통적인 한국의 가옥은 전통적인 한국의 집안을 나타내지요.
The traditional house had to be big enough to accommodate the la-
rge family. But it also had to be designed so that deference and
unity could always be maintained.
전통적인 가옥은 대가족을 수용할 만큼 충분히 커야했지요. 그리고 전
통적인 가옥은 존경과 조화가 항상 유지될 수 있도록 항상 설계되어야
했습니다.
