A girl doing her homework asked her father to explain the difference
between anger and exasperation. Going to the telephone, he dialed a
number and had his daughter listen. "Hello," he said to the man who
answered, "is Melvin there?"
"There's no one here named Melvin," was the reply. "Why don't you look
up numbers before you dial them?"
The father dialed the number again. "Hello, is Melvin there?" he asked.
"Now look!" the man yelled. "I just told you that there's no Melvin
here!" Then he slammed down the receiver.
"You see," the father explained, "that was anger. Now I'll show you
exasperation."
Again he dialed the number, and when a voice roared "Hello," he calmly
said. "This is Melvin. Has there been any calls for me?"
숙제를 하고 있던 소녀가 아버지에게 분노와 격분의 차이를 설명해달라고

그는 전화기를 세차게 내려놓았다.
"자, 이것이 분노라는 거였다." 아버지가 설명했다. "이제 격분이라는 것을
보여주겠다."
그는 다시 그 번호를 돌리고 나서 "여보세요."라는 요란한 소리가 나자
조용한 목소리로 말했다. "멜빈이란 사람인데 혹시 내게 온 전화 없었소?"
