ESL 〔´ｅｓ∂ｌ〕 English as a second language
외국어로서 영어를 공부하는 것을 언어학에서 분류할 때 영어권 밖에서
배우는 것은 Foreign Language..이렇게 이야기 하고요. 영어권 나라에서
배우는 영어는 Second Lagnuage.. 이렇게 분류가 되지요. 여러분께서
영어 교육학에 관심이 있으신 분은 ESL이라던가 EFL이라는 말을 들어 보
셨을 겁니다. ESL(English as a Second Language) 라는 말이구요. EFL은
(English as a Foreign Language) 라는 말이거든요. 바로 이런 것도 이
앞에서 분류된 관점에서 분류된 명칭입니다. 가끔 Second language를 우
리 학교에서 공부하는 제 2외국어와 혼동하고서 우리의 Seond language
는 영어입니다..하시는 분이 있는데요, 그것은 잘못 된 겁니다. 우리에
게는 Second language는 없습니다. 전부다 Foreign language입니다.
오는 10월부터 65세 이상 고령층이 펀드·신탁·주가연계증권(ELS) 등 복잡한 금융상품에 가입할 때 가족 등에게 휴대전화나 문자메시지로 계약 내용을 알려주는 서비스가 시작된다.

The major contractors during the big 1980s defense budgets -- Lockheed
Missiles & Space Co., Ford Aerospace and Communications Corp., GTE
Sylvania, FMC Corp., ESL Inc. -- have downsized, merged, lost their
names or reinvented themselves as commercial businesses to stay alive.

아, 에프엠시, ESL 등의 방산업체들은 생존을 위해 그동안 다운사이즈, 합병
등을 통해 새로운 사실상 민간기업으로 탈바꿈했다.
A reminder of this turmoil came only two weeks ago when Lockheed Martin
Corp. raised the possibility of selling, consolidating or revamping one
of its crown jewels, its missiles and space operation in Sunnyvale. And
this comes after Lockheed Martin's local employment has fallen to 7,850
from nearly 25,000 in 1986.

하나인 서니베일 지역의 미사일-우주항공 사업부문을 매각 및
인수합병시킬지도 모른다고 밝힘으로써 다시 관심의 대상으로 떠올랐다. 록
히드의 종업원은 86년 2만5천명에서 지금은 7,850명 수준으로 줄어든 상태다.
Other companies besides Ford Aerospace were bought out completely. For
example, ESL in Santa Clara was incorporated into defense giant TRW
Inc., and GTE Sylvania in Mountain View into General Dynamics Corp.
포드 우주항공사를 제외한 다른 회사들은 전부 매각됐다. 산타 클라라의
ESL은 방산업계의 거인인 TRW Inc.에 합병됐으며 GTE Sylvania는 제너럴
다이나믹스에 넘어갔다.
