'Trial and error' is the key to learning English.
The second error is the belief that education is a process which stops completely
as soon as adult life begins. Too many young graduates drop their languages, forget
their science, abandon their economic and political thinking. It is like learning
music and then never going to a concert or playing a single note.
두번째 잘못은 교육이 성인생활이 시작되자 마자 완전히 정지되는 과정이라고 믿는 것이다.
너무도 많은 학교를 졸업한 젊은이들이 언어에 대한 공부(또는 관심)를 그만두고, 과학을
잊어버리며, 경제와 정치에 대한 생각을 버린다. 이것은 마치 음악을 배우고 나서 한번도
음악회에 가지 않거나 단 한 곡조도 연주하지 않는 것과 흡사하다.
The third error is the notion that learning and teaching always ought to
have immediate results, show a profit, lead to success. It is true that education is
intended to benefit the entire personality. But it is not possible, not even
desirable, to show that many of the important subjects which are taught as part
of education will make the learner rich, fit him for social life or find him
a job.
세번째 오류는 배우는 것과 가르치는 것이 언제나 당장 결과를 가져오며, 물질적인 혜택을
보여주며, 성공으로 이끌어주어야 한다고 생각하는 것이다. 사실 교육의 목적은 전체의 인격에
혜택을 주는 것이다. 그러나 교육의 일부로 학교에서 가르치고 있는 중요한 과목 가운데 많은
것들이 배우는 사람을 부유하게 만들거나 사회생활에 적합하게 만들어주거나 일자리를 얻게
해주리라는 것을 보여주는 것은 가능하지도 않고 바람직하지조차도 않다.
In general, every achievement requires trial and error. A youth, we need
not feel ashamed of making mistakes in trying to find or win our place in
a social group. It is not easy to learn to fit into a group or to develop
a personality that helps us to fit in. It is somewhat like learning to
play a game like baseball or basketball. We can hardly expect to learn
without making a good many mistakes in the process.
일반적으로, 모든 성취는 시행착오를 필요로 한다. 젊을 때는 우리가 사회
집단에서 자신의 자리를 찾거나 또는 차지하려고 노력하면서 실수를 범하는
것을 부끄러워 할 필요가 없다. 어떤 집단에 잘 어울리는 것을 배우거나,
우리가 잘 어울릴 수 있도록 도와 주는 성격을 개발한다는 것은 쉬운 일이
아니다. 그러한 것은 야구나 농구 같은 게임을 하는 것을 배우는 것과 다소
비슷하다. 우리가 그 과정에서 상당히 많은 실수를 범하지 않고 배운다는 것은
거의 기대할 수 없다.
