The defense may well raise objections to the court's decision to hear

The defense, pleading for a more leisurely trial, argued the defendants'

^^In general, 12 to 19 people are stationed at each of these
sub-stations working in three shifts with each team on duty for at
least 12 hours. At any one time, only one person is on duty at the box,
the other members of the team being out on patrol. This is not enough
to handle the work at the box. At least two officers should be on duty
there. And in order to have police work eight-hour shifts, and for there
to be three shifts a day, at the 3,404 boxes across the country, there
needs to be a 50 percent increase in the present 44,000 person police
force. Considerably more money from the government needs to be
spent to substantially improve the nation's police.

If you want to get to the top of the highest mountain in the world, you have to climb as high as a plane flies.
There aren't any roads or tracks that lead to the top of the mountain.
The mountain is Mount Everest in the Himalaya Range.
The only way to get to the top of Mount Everest is to walk, climb, and crawl there yourself.
You have to drive spikes into the rock and cut your own stairs in the ice.
One false step, and you could fall nearly two and a half miles straight down.
When you get to the top of Mount Everest, you're up so high that the air doesn't have enough oxygen for you to breathe.
So you have to take tanks of oxygen with you.

The message is that to succeed in business you have to be different.
In business, as in life, you need to enjoy yourself,
to have a feeling of family and to feel excited by the unexpected things.

Good jugglers make juggling look so easy that it is difficult to imagine all the physics that comes into play.
Gravity has a significant effect on the number of objects juggled.
Each ball must be thrown high enough to allow the juggler time to handle the other balls.
While throwing higher gives the juggler extra time, it also increases the risk of error.
Juggling low, on the other hand, requires the juggler to catch and throw quickly, also increasing the risk of error.
The need for speed or height will change dramatically as the number of objects being juggled increases.

A space rock big enough to cause widespread damage will hit the Earth only about once every 1,000 years,
but experts say the destruction would be so extreme that nations should develop a joint defense against space rocks.
Some scientists estimated that the space rock would release about 10 megatons of explosive energy.
Such a rock, estimated at 180 feet across, fell down through the atmosphere over Tunguska in Siberia in 1908
and destroyed trees across 800 square miles of forest land.

A true apology is more than just acknowledgement of a mistake.
It's recognition that something you have said or done has damaged a relationship
― and that you care enough about the relationship to want it repaired and restored.
It's never easy.
Admitting to being in the wrong hurts.
But once you make yourself face up to it, swallow your pride.
It can be a wonderfully cleansing and healing thing.
Being human, we all need the art of this.

Ice sometimes can protect crops.
Some growers actually spray their crops with water on a freezing night.
Water freezes quickly on the plants―and then a strange thing happens.
As long as ice stays wet, it cannot get colder than 0℃, a temperature many plants can stand.
If the ice ever became entirely frozen and dry, it might drop many degrees lower, ruining the plants.
But by continually spraying water on the ice, the growers keep it from going below 0℃, saving the plants.
This strange kind of “ice blanket” works only on plants that are strong enough to stand the weight of frozen spray.

Tired of talking to my son about emptying his pockets before washday,
I told him that all the money I found would not be returned.
Instead, I'd put a jar in the laundry room, and when enough money had accumulated, he would have to take me out for dinner.
The next washday, I handed him a laundry basket and asked him to gather up his clothes.
I peeked in and was pleased to see him empty his pockets.
But just as he was about to toss his dirty jeans in the basket, he paused, pulled out his wallet,
and put a handful of change and a dollar bill into the pocket of the jeans.

Success is the act of trying to improve upon the things you're already doing.
It's growing and developing.
It's accepting bigger and greater challenges.
It's not being afraid of making a mistake, suffering a setback, or failing.
It's trying to do your very best.
And if, in the end, your very best wasn't quite good enough, you just have to go back to work and prepare a bit harder for the next time.
Nobody succeeds 100 percent in anything they do.
When you're able to recognize and accept this fact of life, you realize that failure and losing are as much a part of the game of life as are success and winning.

Eagles, soaring high and fearless, have always made people think of strength, freedom, and courage.
For this reason, countries, empires, and rulers from ancient Egypt up to the modern United States have made eagles their symbol.
Most Americans have seen enough pictures and emblems to recognize an eagle.
Surprisingly, few know much about the bird.
Even people who study birds, do not know a great deal.
It is difficult to study the eagle's habits because it is dangerous and fierce.
Also, it nests high up in trees or on cliffs which are difficult to reach.

The rate for heart disease among men in China is one-sixteenth the rate in the U.S.
The rate for colon cancer is only about two-fifths of the U.S. rate.
Scientists believe that the poor diet of North American is killing them.
The average citizen consumes too much meat, sugar and salt and not enough vegetables, grains, and fiber.
And these unhealthy eating habits are prime suspects in several serious diseases: heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and some cancers.
Some call these diseases “diseases of wealth.”
As countries become richer, people begin to eat more meat.
Heart disease and certain kinds of cancer increase.
This is happening in Japan and in the wealthier parts of China.

Children who are old enough to understand the idea of schedules and chores can understand the needs of your home business.
Explain to your children that you do your work at home so that you can be near them when they need you.
But also be sure they understand that you must do your work so that you will have the money necessary to keep your house, feed the family, and provide them with money for entertainment.
Once your children understand the necessity of your work, then outline a work schedule and explain it to them.
Then make sure they understand that between hours x and y, you will be doing work, and then tell them to respect your schedule.

I had always thought of hurricanes as something mankind could do without.
But recently I learned that they are necessary to maintain a balance in nature.
These tropical storms, with winds up to 150 miles an hour, accompanied by heavy rains, glaring lightning, and roaring thunder, can be devastating.
Yet scientists tell us they are very valuable.
They scatter a large percentage of the oppressive heat which builds up at the equator, and they bring enough rainfall in North and South America.
Therefore, scientists no longer try to prevent them from being formed.
They are convinced that hurricanes do more good than harm.

Although there are thousands of species of wild animals, surprisingly few species have been domesticated.
The reason is that it takes special qualities to make animals suitable for domestication.
They must be strong enough to withstand removal from their mother at an early age.
They must breed freely in captivity and be easy to look after.
Domestic or farm animals must be able to develop a liking for man, enjoy comfort, and accept confinement and control.
And, of course, they must be useful: primarily as a source of food,
but also in the provision of wool or hide for clothing and sometimes as a means of transport or pulling power.

Convinced that education is their best hope for the future,
many Kenyan parents are willing to make great sacrifices to send their children to high school.
They quickly discover, however, that there are not enough schools for everyone.
Even the high schools run by the government are too expensive for many families.
Kenyans have found an answer to the problem in harambee, a word that means self-help.
As part of the harambee movement, many villages built their own high schools.
Villagers organized fund-raising campaigns instead of expecting their government to help them.
Church groups donated some of the money.
Those who had no money to give donated their labor.

The process of culture shock is so predictable that its stages have been systematized.
The first is the honeymoon stage, familiar to those of us who love to travel, but never stay in one place long enough to find out what follows.
In the honeymoon stage, the new country and its people seem delightful.
It almost feels more comfortable than home.
Everything is so different and charming, the people are so nice and the customs are so interesting.
Then the bloom comes off the rose.
People start to look shallow, selfish, and stupid.
The different ways of doing things do not seem interesting any more―just boring.
You start to feel exhausted all the time.
Culture shock has set in.

In order to maintain strong bones, people must eat plenty of calcium-rich food.
Leafy green vegetables and low-fat dairy products are excellent sources of calcium.
They put stiffness into your skeletal system and keep your bones from turning rubbery and fragile.
Your body uses calcium for more than keeping your bones strong, however.
Calcium also helps cells to divide, it allows muscles to work,
and it plays an important role in moving protein and nutrients around inside the body.
If you do not absorb enough calcium from what you eat, to do these things, your body will take it from your bones.
Because your body does not produce calcium, you must continually replenish the supply.

It takes time and effort to change the way you think and act.
Consider the way you brush your teeth.
This is a simple habit pattern.
But a considerable amount of effort is required to change it.
Before beginning to brush, you would have to remind yourself about the new method you plan to use.
While brushing, your mind would wander and you would catch yourself returning to your old method.
After a second reminder you would start using the new method only to forget and have to catch yourself again.
And so it would go until enough time and energy had been spent to make the new method as automatic as the old method was.

Our early ancestors may have used the fingers of their hands or cut notches like /// on tree branches to indicate how many apples they had picked that day.
But they must have realized that no tree branch could be long enough to count a very large number of apples.
They eventually invented names for groups of notches and, since we don't know what language they spoke,
we might as well imagine that they spoke English and said “one” for /, “two” for //, “three” for ///, or “nine” for /////////, and so on.
Thus special words did become useful substitutes for notches.

Hermit crabs occupy the empty shells of dead sea snails for protection while still retaining their mobility.
They are capable of discriminating among a selection of shells of various sizes and species,
and they choose the one that fits the body most closely.
Hermit crabs change shells as they grow, although in some marine environments a large enough variety of shells may not be available
and hermit crabs may be forced to occupy a smaller-than-ideal “house."
When a shell becomes too small for the hermit crab to occupy,
it will sometimes become aggressive and fight other hermit crabs to gain a more comfortable one.

For the past half-century, those lucky enough to have been born in a rich country have had every prospect of growing richer.
On average, incomes in Britain, America and Japan have easily doubled over that time.
On top of this come the benefits of longer lives of better quality, thanks to advances in medicine
and to a plethora of consumer goods making living easier and more enjoyable.
You might even expect folks to be a great deal happier

That can be answered at two levels.
An evolutionary biologist would tell you that it is because women get evolutionary bonus points from living long enough to help bring up the grandchildren.
Men, by contrast, wear themselves out competing for the right to procreate in the first place.
That is probably true, but not much help to the medical profession.
However, a group of researchers has just come up with a medically useful answer.
It is that while 70-year-old men have the hearts of 70-year-olds, those of their female peers resemble the hearts of 20-year-olds.

Today the suburban ring can be regarded as an outer city which increasingly controls the economic and social life of the metropolitan sector.
At the same time, it should be noted that the rapid growth of suburbs has created many problems.
For example, numerous suburbs have had trouble raising enough money for such essential services as police and fire protection.
Furthermore, residents often engage in debates over the quality of the schools in the communities and the amount of taxes required to support them.
Particularly in older suburbs, population change may produce conflict between social groups.

Pen designers must be aware of hundreds of requirements.
Make the pen too thin, and it will not be strong enough to stand up to the hard use of schoolchildren.
Make the middle section too thick, and it can neither be grasped properly by the fingers nor controlled with enough precision.
However, people with arthritic hands may need a thick body because they can't close their fingers entirely.
And what of those who use the pen as a measuring device or as a mechanical instrument to poke, stab, and twist?
For example, the instructions for the clock in my automobile say to set it by pressing the recessed button with the tip of a ball-point pen.

Maimonides, the great Jewish philosopher who lived in the 12th century, was as current as the 1990s when he described the eight levels of charity.
As you read these words, ask yourself how many people measure up to these lofty standards.
Going from the lowest level of charity to the highest, here are the eight levels:
1. He who gives unwillingly.
2. He who gives cheerfully, but not enough.
3. He who gives enough, but not until he is asked.
4. He who gives before being asked, but gives directly to the poor man.
5. The poor man knows from whom he takes, but the giver does not know who is receiving.
6. The giver knows to whom he gives, but the receiver does not know the giver.
7. The giver does not know to whom he gives, nor does the poor man know from whom he receives.
8. The highest form of charity is to strengthen the hand of the poor man by giving him a loan, joining him in partnership, or training him out of his poverty, to help him establish himself.

The fact is that the less developed countries(LDCs) should not have to be producing primarily for developed country markets.
In the first place, they could trade more with each other, and be less dependent on developed countries for trade.
The LDCs have within themselves all that is required for growth.
They have surpluses of fuel and of the principal minerals.
They have enough land to feed themselves, if they cultivate it properly.
They are capable of learning the skills of manufacturing, and of saving the capital required for modernization.
Their development does not in the long run depend on the existence of the developed countries, and their potential for growth would be unaffected even if all the developed countries were to sink under the sea.

Dear Lord, how do you explain today's crazy economic system to a child?
How do I tell him that Daddy doesn't make enough money to support our family so I have to go to work to help pay the bills?
And Lord, keep me from resenting those who add to my guilt.
By presuming I work because I want to get out of the house.

More and more people express concern about the appropriate balance of work with leisure and other aspects of their lives.
Thus, they may be less willing to accept overtime assignments or to work long hours or weekends.
Further, there are growing numbers of single-parent families and families in which both spouses work.

A record 6 out of 10 mothers with children under eighteen years old were in the labor force in 1984, compared with only 4 out of 10 in 1970.
These trends create pressures on organizations to be flexible enough in working hours so that children can be picked up from school or taken to the doctor or dentist.
There are also more pressures on organizations and communities to provide day-care centers.

Our problem has been trying to depend on government to police the polluters.
Polluting has been against the law for a long time, but there will never be enough government regulation to prevent the illegal dumping of waste chemicals or the midnight venting of smokestacks.
This polluting of the biosphere won't completely stop until an alarmed citizenry pulls out their video recorders and takes it upon themselves to catch these people in the act.
In a sense, business and the employees of business must regulate themselves.

In parts of Africa the farmers cut down trees and bushes so that they can till the land.
When the soil is exhausted they move on.
Most old fields can be re-cultivated after a period of rest.
Early farmers in Europe did the same.
When there was not enough unused woodland left they used a third of their fields for pasture, letting the animal manure fertilize the soil before the next tilling.
Then it was discovered that plants like clover and beans enrich the soil, so that they can be used every year.
Later, minerals were added to the soil to replace those used up by the crops.
Modern farming uses many chemicals, which must, however, be tested to see that they do not affect human and animal health.

I went to public school, and because of my total lack of interest and non-attendance I was asked to leave.
I didn't want to go there in the first place.
I was taken away from all my friends.
My father must have been very pleased to get me into the school, but in the end it was a complete waste of money.
I let him down quite badly, I suppose.
I tried several jobs but I couldn't settle down in them.
They just weren't challenging enough.
Then I realized that what I really wanted to do was live in the country and look after animals, so that's what I now do.
As a family, we're not that close, either emotionally or geographically.
We don't see much of each other these days.
My father and I are totally different, like chalk and cheese.
My interests have always been the country, but his are books, music and above all, opera, which I hate.
If he does come to see me, he's in completely the wrong clothes for the country ― fur coats, nice little leather shoes, not exactly ideal for long walks across the fields.

have done just what the boy did. Now I'm a grandfather
and have a lot of gray hair and what a lot of people would call common sense.
But if I'm no longer young in age, I hope I stay young enough in spirit never to
fear failure-young enough still to take a chance and march in the parade.
- Walt Disney

By 1977 he had dropped business - in favor of liberal arts and earned
at least a B average - good enough to be on the dean's list.

Inflation is edging toward 6%, much below the Community average but enough
to stir memories of the hyperinflation that tore the Weimar Republic apart.

In essence, Reagan aims to treat the causes, not the symptoms, of nuclear
proliferation. He believes that nations wanting nuclear weapons badly enough
will find the means to get them; that the best deterrent is to alleviate that
desire, through easing regional tensions and supplying conventional military aid.
At the same time, Reagan plans to increase exports of U.S. nuclear technology to
nations pursuing peaceful nuclear energy programs, a plan that will probably do
little to relieve America's perceived complicity - if not make matters worse.

Each day in our small town the siren at the fire station blows at 6 p.m. One evening
it sounded at 7:15 p.m. Concerned, a group of us townspeople gathered to see which way
the fire trucks would go.
When they didn't leave the station, we asked what was going on,"There isn't any fire,"
we were told. "the firemen are having a meeting and not enough of them showed up."

A few individuals, true enough, are so oddly disposed that they can take unemployment
with upbeat nonchalance, making a lark of it or seizing the opportunity to switch careers.

It can be said that any scientist of any age who wants to make important
discoveries must study important problems. Dull problems yield dull answers. It is not
enough that a problem should be interesting. A problem must be such that it matters what
the answer is - whether to science generally or to mankind.

But democracy is usually a tumultuous and unseemly affair, especially when men
feel strongly about vital issues. Probably since the first popular assembly convened
there have been presiding officers who turned a deaf ear to delegates they did not
like. Rival factions have always tried to pack the galleries and to shout down their
opponents. To take note of these historical facts is not to condone them. An unending
effort has to be made to create procedural sefeguards strong enough to curb the
ineradicable human impulse to unfairness. But critics should not pretend they were
born yesterday and are innocent of any knowledge of pressure tactics in politics.

Family, tradition and hospitality are the most important things in Saura's
life; the material benefits and values of the West-or, more precisely, of
Soviet society-are real enough, but emphatically secondary in her scheme
of things.

That is not enough for Lee, however. By 1990 he wants his country to have
reached the level of Japan today, to become a nation of high-technology
manufacturing and computerized services in industries such as banking
and communications.

We spend our lives in motor cars, yet most of us do not know enough about
a car to look in the gas tank when the motor fails.

Democracy is, among other things, the ability to say 'No' to the boss.
But a man cannot say 'No' to the boss unless he is sure of being able to eat
when the boss's favor has been withdrawn.
And he cannot be certain of his next meal unless he owned the means of producing enough wealth for his family to live on, or has been able to accumulate a surplus out of past wages, or has a chance of moving away to virgin territories, where he can make a fresh new start.

I'll wager he's had enough of foreign travel, after that!

As a hair stylist in a salon, I was giving a client a shampoo. The hose
I was using to rinse his hair slipped out of my hand and sprayed him
squarely in the face.
I couldn't apologize enough, but he was nice about the mishap. "That's
okay," he said, "I'm a plumber. I'm used to it."

While picking up a prescription at the drugstore, I noticed that I had been
charged three dollars too much. The pharmacist said he would put the
overpayment on the computer, to be applied toward the next refill.
A few weeks later I returned, and the clerk failed to deduct the three
dollars. "Look on the computer," I told him. He walked over to it.
Sure enough, the information was there. Taped to the monitor was a piece
of scratch paper that said: "We owe Mr. Hurst $3."

All of my studies indicate that a decided majority of the Americans are
dissatisfied with their jobs and wish they were doing something else.
What about you? Is your job work or fun?
If it is work, then you would probably be wise to take immediate steps
to get out of it. Your life is too short and too valuable to waste in work.
If you don't get out now, you may end up like the frog that is placed
in a pot of fresh water on the stove. As the temperature in the pot
gradually increased, the frog feels restless and uncomfortable, but
not uncomfortable enough to jump out. Without being aware that a change
is taking place, he is gradually lulled into unconsciousness―boiled.

Although municipal workers were building a number of speed breakers on
our neighborhood roads, nothing was being constructed on one long straight
stretch. When I asked a municipal official the reason, he pointed to
a girl's college alongside. "That's the best speed breaker!" he said.
And, sure enough, drivers were slowing down to watch the students.

The technique of writing is no less difficult than that of the other arts
and yet, because he can read and write a letter, there is a notion that
anyone can write well enough to write a book.
Writing seems now the favorite relaxation of the human race.
