The military exists to protect the nation from outside enemies. To do
its mission, it is imperative that the armed forces maintain full
preparedness against all possible contingencies, including natural
adversities. A fighting machine is useless if it is unable to ensure the
safety of its own components in peace time.

Rigid Control of Violent Students :
^^State prosecutors have decided to break up the violent Hanchongnyon,
or Korean Federation of University Student Councils, which organized
the fierce clashes with police that started eight days ago at Yonsei
University in Seoul, branding it a subversive body that benefits the
enemy (North Korea) and is thus in violation of the National Security
Law.
National Security Law :

^^They also could proceed against its leaders on the basis of the
violence they participated in or instigated, holding their sixth annual
Unification Festival on the occasion of Liberation Day on Aug. 15,
celebrated in both the South and the North. In fact the Supreme Court in
1992 and 1993 labeled two committees under the umbrella of
Chondaehyop, Hanchongnyon's predecessor, as bodies benefiting the
enemy.

^^The violent students have mistaken ways of thinking in two respects.
The first is their hewing to an ideological line benefiting the enemy,
which is proscribed by the National Security Law. The second is their
use of violence to pursue their goals, physically challenging riot police, a
symbol of government authority, by beating them and throwing
firebombs at them.

^^There are many people who wonder why the government earlier took a
lenient attitude to a leftist student organization which it now labels as
an anti-state body benefiting the enemy. It virtually asked the illegal
organization to confront riot police, by failing to effectively control it
from the start. The students' response to the police action generated
scenes unimaginable in other countries. Some citizens have come out and
criticized the government, the national police and university
administrators as well for their inability to put the lid on the agitators
in a timely fashion.

- A - 겁쟁이 노란색
" He doesn't want to fight. Look! He's yellow.

People were able to travel faster and farther with horses.
They were able to leave their own land.
Many people went to distant lands, met new people, and saw new places.
They taught other people how to use horses.
Then, about 3,500 years ago, people in Mesopotamia began to use horses to help them win wars against their enemies.
They drove chariots, or carts, pulled by two or more horses.
It was impossible for an enemy on foot to fight against a soldier in a chariot.
As a result, armies with horses and chariots were very powerful.

This warns the other elephants in the herd of possible danger.
The trunk plays a vital part in its life.
In fact, it is almost impossible for an elephant to survive if its trunk becomes damaged.

One needs the enemy. So, within limits, the friction, not only between individuals
but between groups, seems to me quite necessary for civilisation.

We were outnumbered by the enemy.

Hart would try to change military thinking by rewarding and advancing officers
who are expert in tactics and innovation, not program managers. "We've got to
outsmart the enemy," says the Senator, who was shocked to discover that the
academies have virtually squeezed out the required study of military history and
tactics in favor of the social and political sciences.

The conquerors imposed difficult conditions of peace on the defeated enemy.

*servitude 노예상태 condition of being forced to work for others and having no freedom:
They spent their lives in servitude to the enemy conquerors.

The soldiers were punished for their base conduct in running away from the enemy.

When the first colonists arrived in North America the hand of friendship
was extended by the red man, agreements were drawn up and boundaries
were laid down. As time passed, however, more and more of the Indian
lands were swallowed up by the white settlers. Humiliated and confused,
the red man was pushed further west until there was scarcely enough room
for him in a land that was rightfully his. Some of the greatest and most
far-sighted of the Indian chiefs saw that the only chance for the Indians
was in uniting the tribes against their common enemy. But the habits of
the Indians made this impossible. Inter-tribal warfare was their way of
life.

만만치 않은 적 a formidable adversary

*dismay 놀람; 당황 feeling of fear and discouragement:
The news that the enemy were near filled them with dismay.

*midst …가운데 among:
우리들 속에 있는 적 the enemy in our midst (=among us)

adversary N. enemy; one who opposes another.
His adversary refused to forgive him for his wrong.

e, friend, or enemy towards the patient.
This emotion, they say, causes a tooth to enter the body of the patient
and create disease. The healer calls together the victim's relatives and
friends to watch a ceremony, at the end of which he "removes" the tooth
from the patient's throat, arm, leg, etc. Although the patient and the
villagers know what has happened - that the tooth has been hidden inside
the healer's mouth the whole time, the patient is often cured.

To writers, words on the page are never finished; each can be changed or
rearranged. Writers must separate themselves from their own pages so that
they can apply both their caring and their craft to their own work. They
must accept the criticism of others but be suspicious of it; they must
accept the praise of others but be even more suspicious of it. Writers
cannot depend on others. They must learn to be their own best enemy.

The villagers were busy rebuilding their old houses which had been
destroyed during the war. Shouts of joy arose as the villagers saw their
own children returning home after they were freed from the enemy. They
dropped what they were doing and ran out to meet the children, who rushed
on ahead to this joyful reunion. There were tears and laughter.

In other words, unless we ensure to the enemies of freedom the liberties which they are keen to abuse, then we deny the essence of what we ultimately stand for and are therefore no better thant those to whom we are opposed.
Or as Voltaire has been paraphrased, "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."
On a more practical plane, freedom of speech serves many functions.
One of its most important functions is that decision-making at all levels is preceded by discussion and consideration of a representative range of views.

I tell you that whilst my friend believes also in the doctrine of violence and has adopted the doctrine of non-violence and has adopted the doctrine of non-violence as a weapon of the weak, I believe in the doctrine of non-violence as a weapon of the strongest.
I believe that a man is the strongest soldier for daring to die unarmed with his breast bare before the enemy.
So much for the non-violence part of non-cooperation.
I, therefore, venture to suggest to my learned country men that so long as the doctrine of non-cooperation remains non-violent, so long there is nothing unconstitutional in that doctrine.

I say to my countrymen so long as you have a sense of honor and so long as you wish to remain the descendants and defenders of the noble traditions that have been handed to your for generations after generations;
it is unconstitutional for you not to non-cooperate and unconstitutional for you to cooperate with a Government which has become so unjust as our Government has become.
I am not anti-English; I am not anti-British; I am not anti any Government; but I am anti-untruth ― anti-humbug and anti-injustice.

Utilizing the outgoing gangster film trend to its advantage, the comic gang action "For the Glory of My Family" rose to become the biggest box-office seller with 5.1 million tickets sold nationwide.
Next was "The Way Home," a nostalgic drama on the love between a rural grandma and her grandson, which sold more than 4 million tickets.
Except for these two leading films, only two local films―"Public Enemy" and "2009 Lost Memories"―attracted more than 2 million viewers.

During the last century, over a million people left Ireland to live in
Canada and the United States. They left not because of religious or
political persecution. They left because of an enemy that had taken
their only food from them. Ireland in the nineteenth century was a
desperately poor country. Many people had almost nothing to eat except
potatoes. In 1845, a disease known as the potato blight attacked and
killed the entire potato crop. Soon after the crop failed, people began
to die- some from starvation, others from diseases that attacked them in
their weakened condition. The British government provide some food for
the starving, but not enough to end the famine.

Its principal function is that of providing safety from predators, partly
because the flock can rely on many pairs of eyes to watch for enemies, and
partly because if one bird reacts to danger, the whole flock is warned.

Usually when we are concerned about a close friend, we call this compassion.
However, this is not compassion.
Genuine compassion is based not on our own expectations, but rather on the understanding of the other person.
It doesn't matter Whether he or she is a close friend or an enemy.
If you really understand that a person wishes for peace and happiness and wishes to over come suffering, you'll, develop genuine concern for his or her problem on that basis.
This is genuine compassion.

"The fact is that Iraq is happy with the situation. Saddam
has a multitude of enemies which he manipulates to legitimize
his rule and pull together the different factions" in Iraq,
Ghabra said.
"It is sad because, historically, Kuwait has always had
close ties with Iraq. The Kuwaiti people have no problem with
Iraqis ... in fact we have the deepest sympathy," he added.

Hundreds of families in Kuwait still await news of some 600
Kuwaitis and other residents who went missing during the
Iraqi occupation.
"Until this is cleared up, the chances of Kuwait and Iraq
being at the same table together are slim. It is a major
human rights issue, which lives on wherever you look in
Kuwait," said a spokesperson for the "committee of
martyrs," which provides social care for the families of the
missing.
▲ clear up: 풀다, 해결하다

Still, Lockheed Martin is a clear example of the troubled shift from
military to civilian work. At its sprawling Sunnyvale campus, Building
107 was designed to foil enemy eavesdropping during the Cold War.
There's not much to spy on now: The building is an exhibit center
containing a rambling display of the company's past Cold War triumphs
and current commercial projects.
