hesitatingly, "I won't. I'll never miss such an easy ball again."

mother may need to, also. When she discussed your homework with others,

Former students are frequently embarrassing in their assertion that you
awakened them to think, or to think clearly, or to feel qualities in
things and ideas and people they had never perceived before. They can be
incredibly kind, even or especially when they think they are being
objective and just. For it is difficult to distinguish the persons from
the things they communicate, and many a teacher gets a certain glamour
in a student's memory. To a very young mind, if only for a short time,
the teacher is confused with the things taught. This may, indeed, be
very bad for the teacher, who, in the mirror of his student's
generosity, makes something like the same identification, too. His
colleagues will correct him, and many of his unbemused students would,
too, given the opportunity.

Yesterday, my friend and I took Ben shopping with us, so he
could understand the appeal. I explained everything to him
the night before, but shopping day was a *disaster. He was
not up at 4:30 to be first in line. He *poked around and
refused to wear the shopping *attire I had given him _
comfortable shoes and a backpack. In the shops, he refused to
*cooperate. His critical attitude attracted embarrassing
attention from other shoppers. *To top it all off, when I
made a purchase, he would throw up his arms and *scream.
"Run, Visa Card! Run!"
▲ disaster: a sudden or great misfortune: 재난, 참사
▲ cooperate: act jointly with another or others: 협력하다
▲ to top it all: 게다가, 더욱이

[John's Diary]
After parking the car, I ran for the nearby subway station. I
didn't have a fare card with me, so I put 400 Won into the
slot of the automatic ticket vending machine and pushed the
button. But, nothing happened. I thought the damn machine was
out of order and had eaten my money, so I gave it a real hard
kick. A station attendant came up and scolded me saying the
fare had been raised to 450 Won long ago. How embarrassing. I
bought a ticket and slid through the turnstile. I found a
train already leaving. Damn, I missed the train by a second.
I didn't have a fare card with me 처럼 with me를 쓴 것은
2. Slot: Slot
3. The damn machine was out of order: Order
4. Gave it a real hard kick: 찬다고 하면 그냥 kick을 쓰지요.
take, have에 붙여 씁니다.
Push를 이런 형태로 바꾼다면 give it a push가 되겠지요. Look할
것도 take a good look하지요.
5. Station attendant came up:
Something came up. I won't be able to meet at 7.
6. Long ago: Long time ago
7. Slid: slide
8. Turnstile:
9. Missed the train by a second: 무슨무슨 차이로 할 때 by를
간발의 차이로는 by a hair('s breadth) 또는 by a
whisker를 쓰지요.
I missed the train by a hair.
I got on the plain by a hair.

Clinton's final exit from his potentially embarrassing China

apparent idea behind this itinerary may be to convey to the
critics of his foreign policies the identical message that
Beijing can be made a Hong Kong.

'have my cavity
Patient:I think I need to have my cavity filled in.
Dentist:Does it give you much pain?
Patient:Yes,it does.
Dentist:Let me have a look at it. please open your mouth wide.
Patient:Aaah!
Dentist:Wow,this is the largest cavity that I've ever seen in my
whole life! It looks like a cave! Cave! Cave! Cave!
Patient:How embarrassing! why do you say the word 'cave' so many
times?
Dentist:Please stay calm. It must have been an echo. Well…, I think
this cave will cave in pretty soon. We'll have to pull it out.

'make an eleventh-hour change'
A:Did you hear that Jane did make an eleventh-hour change just befor
e her wedding?
B:What kind of change did she make at the last moment?
A:She made up her mind not to marry John.
B:Why in the world did she change her mind?
A:I don't know the reason exactly, but probably she realized she did
n't love John.
B:Well, then, she must have loved someone else.
A:Right. She had loved a disabled young man, named Sam, but her pare
nts didn't allow her to marry him.
B:I think her decision was both an embarrassing and a courageous one
.
A:그렇습니다.
<어구풀이> in the world:도대체.
disabled:장애가 있는.
embarrassing:당황하게 하는.
courageous:용기가 있는.

A:Today we're going to discuss the adoption of the telecommuting
system. I think we need to hear the pros and cons.
B:I’m sure that the system is very productive in that it will reduce
tardiness and absenteeism.
A:I guess it’s very productive, especially for you, Mr. Smith.
B:I'm so embarrassed.
C:I don’t agree with Mr. Smith. My wife always nags me to spend more
time with her, so if our company adopts this system, I’m afraid
I'll not be able to do anything at home.
A:As for me, I dislike the system. It will get rid of our chances to
get together and have a drink.
어구풀이adoption:채택
tardiness:지각
nag:잔소리하다
get together:서로 만나다
