Finding a career can be difficult, frustrating, and even depressing.
What can people do to avoid discouragement and keep a healthy perspective?
“Take it a step at a time, don't rush it and don't compare yourself to other people,”says Gar.
Each person has his or her own timeline and develops at different rates.
“As soon as we start comparing ourselves to others we start getting discouraged,” warns Gar.
Stop doing it now.

Our personal distance allows us to stay protected and untouched by others.
In personal distance, we can touch each other by extending our arms.
At this distance we can see many of the fine details of an individual―the gray hairs, tooth stain, the shape of eyebrows, and so on.
However, it is hard to detect body heat.
At times we may detect the smell of one's breath,
but generally at this distance etiquette demands that we direct our breath to some neutral corner so as not to offend.

Like animals, people also use different languages.
Each culture has its own words and symbols that are used by people within that culture to communicate with others in the same culture.
For example, a person living in Japan will use the Japanese language to communicate with other Japanese.
Unlike animals though, some cultures use more than one language.
People within these cultures are said to be either bilingual or multilingual.
One such place is Canada.
It is very likely that a person living in Canada may speak both French and English.
Likewise, a person living in Switzerland may speak Italian, German and French.

Some years ago, Fortune magazine conducted a survey of many of the CEOs of Fortune 500 companies.
The goal was to try to find traits that these successful people had in common.
Surprising to say, there weren't many! Some of these top executives had gone to excellent universities, others not.
Some brought years of experience to their jobs, while others had enjoyed a quicker rise to success.
One of the few things they shared was that, along the way, they had each experienced a major career setback.
Most of them, in fact, had been fired from at least one job.
Understandably, none of them at the time felt they had been treated fairly.
Dwelling on life's unfairness and cruelties will not make your life better.
Those CEOs learned to move beyond setbacks.
We might even conclude that, without confrontation with negative events, they would not be where they are today.

Societies progress from simple to more complex ways of life as they develop special skills and knowledge.
When each person keeps to his own work, he depends on others to satisfy his other needs.
The more complex a society becomes, the more its members depend on each other.

During the later years of the American Revolution, the Articles of Confederation government was formed.
This government suffered severely from a lack of power.
Each state distrusted the others and gave little authority to the central or federal government.
The Articles of Confederation produced a government which could not raise money from taxes, prevent Indian raids, or force the British out of the United States.

The only way in which social life can continue is for each individual to
keep unimpaired his or her own independence and self-respect as well as that of
others. This may be done by respecting the rights and happiness of others at the
same time that we seek our own happiness and protect our own rights.

As long as the term "art" is applied to a realm so vast and indefinite as to embrace
literature, music and dance, theater and film, the visual and decorative arts, and other
equally diverse activities, their classification - the way in chich each is regarded as
being either unique or like others - will remain a controversial but necessary undertaking.

At first, each star appears separated from all the others;but, as one looks
a little longer, clusters begin to take shape, pairings appear, and groupings emerge.

An American, a Scot and a Canadian were killed in a car accident.
They arrived at the gates of heaven, where a flustered St. Peter
explained that there had been a mistake.
"Give me $500 each," he said, "and I'll return you to earth as if
the whole thing never happened."
"Done!" said the American. Instantly, he found himself standing
unhurt near the scene.
"Where are the others?" asked a medic.
"Last I knew," said the American, "the Scot was haggling price,
and the Canadian was arguing that his government should pay."

The working rat in each group did not work because it was the hungriest;
for when the experimenters took a working rat from its cage and fed it
up and put it back with its two idle companions, it still went on working.
It does rather look as though there is such a thing as an unselfish rat;
the quickest and brightest rats, the best workers, are prepared to keep
the others in splendid idleness not because they are driven to but
because for some mysterious reason they want to.

Imagine two basketball teams, each composed of half of five pairs of
identical twins. But one team has the institution of authority and the
other does not.
The one with authority simply has the custom that if one of the members
wears a red arm band, the others will obey his instructions; not because
he is stronger, or smarter, or older, or a better player, just because
he wears the arm band. The other team has no way of selecting a leader.
Clearly the first team will have a much greater chance of beating the
second team.

Consider the relationships within a family unit made up of a husband, a
wife, and a child. The husband influences his wife and child. The wife
influences her husband and child. The child influences both mother and
father. Add another child. A grandparent. Add an aunt. And an uncle. Add
a cousin. A neighbor. Friends. If we were to make this list longer, we
would end up with an entire society. A society is a network of
relationships among individuals. Each will influence the others, and each
will be influenced by the others.

To keep a pleasant environment, employers cannot allow certain kinds of
behaviors such as arriving late or bothering others. These behaviors may
weaken the group work environment and decrease productivity. So employers
always consider teamwork when they judge a worker's performance. They
look for employees who support each other, take pride in their work, and
encourage a pleasant working environment. Respect, good manners, and
thoughtful behaviors are keys to successful teamwork. In fact, working
well with others is one of the most important job skills.

To writers, words on the page are never finished; each can be changed or
rearranged. Writers must separate themselves from their own pages so that
they can apply both their caring and their craft to their own work. They
must accept the criticism of others but be suspicious of it; they must
accept the praise of others but be even more suspicious of it. Writers
cannot depend on others. They must learn to be their own best enemy.

Third, we, as citizens of the world, should recognize that there are many peoples and cultures in the world, and should understand them.
Many people around the world do not understand others and deny each others.
Those foolish thoughts like ours are the best cannot help at all.
Besides, to win the competition against other countries, it must be a reasonable way to understand them.

The pluralistic vision of the human aspiration to live a good life must
not be interpreted on the model of there being a common destination that
we may reach in different ways. The notion of a common destination is
itself deeply at odds with pluralism. If a metaphor is wanted, artistic
creation is perhaps less unsatisfactory than others. We make our lives
the way artists make works of art. We and artists start from some
context, some tradition, some educa- tional influences on us; we are
limited by what we bring to it by way of talents, imagination, and
skill, as well as by the available possibilities and by the demands and
expectations of other people in our context; and then we do what we can,
and we succeed, fail, or banally fall somewhere in between. But the
product, the life or the work of art, is going to be different in each
case, because the contributions made to it by the tradition, by our
individuality, and by the mixture we concoct of the two are also
different.

◆ disaster, calamity, catastrophe, cataclysm
- disaster
It was the latest in a string of hotel disasters.
She was in Mexico City when the disaster happened.
No one can think clearly when disaster strikes.
- calamity
I felt strange when the media reported scientific calamities.
Nobody know exactly what the calamity of war is.
He is a calamity howler.
- catastrophe
For each man who loses his job unemployment is a personal catastrophe.
She was forever predicting disaster and catastrophe.
Several religions devastated by natural catastrophes.
- cataclysm
It was the cataclysm that would bring the world to an end.
While there is plenty of dispute about just how prepared transportation systems are globally,
the most recent spate of government and industry reports suggest that the industry, like others,
is likely to encounter minor glitches, not cataclysm.

◆ House and Home
House
These are the typical types of house which most Indian people live in.
The Houses of Parliament in London are visited by 50,000 people each year.
We are going to buy Jane a doll's house for Christmas.
I have enjoyed living abroad for the last six years, but it is time for me to go back home now!
We were at home in bed when our car was stolen from outside the house.'
These children need a well- conditioned house but what is more important to them is a good home and we are in a position to give them one.
I did my housework (i.e. cleaning the house) this morning and my homework (work given to me by my school to do at home) this afternoon.'
People say that I am house-proud because I spend so much time cleaning the house so that others will admire it.
house-proud adj.
She said that she was missing her home and family so much. She sounded really homesick.
