You'll get the hang of it. 요령이 생길거야.
* 우리말 '요령'에 해당하는 영어는 hang과 knack이다.
'요령이 생긴다.'는 말은 get the hang(knack) of it.
훨씬 수준이 높은 요령은 know-how라 하고 expertise
즉, '전문적 기술'을 의미한다.
그리고 또 누가 무엇을 아주 잘 하는 것을 보고
"도가 텄구나"라고 하는데, 이러한 우리말에 해당하는 영어는
have(get) something down to a science 이다.
ex) You've got your dishwashing down to a science.
접시 닦기엔 도가 텄구나.

Put down의 여러 가지 뜻.
* 새로 집이나 차를 산 사람을 보고 우리는 '현금은 얼마나 냈느냐?'고
흔히 묻곤 한다. 이 때 How much did you put down? 라고 하면 된다.
여기서 put down은 '얼마를 down payment로 지불한다.'는 뜻이다.
put down은 원래 글자 그대로 무엇을 '내려놓다'는 뜻이다.
가구점에서 산 의자를 배달해 온 배달원에게 put it down here. 라고
하면 '그거 여기 내려 놓으세요'란 말이다. 그러나 동양인이라고
깔보는 백인에게 Don't put me down because I'm an Oriental.이라고
하면 '내가 동양인이라고 깔보지 말라'는 말이 된다.
그러니까 put down은 '깔보다'는 뜻으로 쓰인다.
look down on도 같은 뜻으로 쓰인다. 또 put down은 장부에
'기록하다'는 뜻도 된다.
Don't forget to put it down in your checkbook은
'그것을 수표책에 기록하는 것을 잊지 마세요'란 말이 된다.
또 병원에 예약을 할 때 We'll put you down for Friday 2 P.M.
'금요일 오후 2시로 기록(예약)해 두겠습니다.'란 뜻이 된다.
그리고 put down은 반란 같은 것을 '진압하다'는 뜻으로도 쓰인다.

Ten years' study down the drain! 십 년 공부 도로아미타불.
* '10년간의 공부가 수챗구멍 밑으로 빠져 버렸다'는 의미로
쓰이는데 drain대신에 tubes란 말을 쓰기도 하는데 둘 다
'배수관'이란 뜻이다. down the drain 및 down the tubes와
비슷한 표현으로 back to the drawing board와
back to square one이란 말도 잘 쓴다. square one은
chess에서 출발점을 가리키므로 back to square one은
'원점으로 되돌아간다'는 뜻이 된다. 또 drawing board는
'제도판'이므로 back to the drawing board는 설계사가
마음에 들지 않는 설계도를 찢어 버리고 다시 제도판
앞으로 되돌아간다는 표현이다. on the drawing board란
말도 있는데 이것은 '아직 설계(계획)단계에 있다'
즉 '아직 구체적인 계획은 없고 구상단계에 있다'는 뜻이다.

You are a cut above me. 넌 나보다 한 수 위다.
* a cut above∼ 는 '∼누구보다 한 수 위다'는 뜻으로 많이
쓰이는 말이다. above 대신에 below를 쓰면 물론 '한 수 아래다'는
뜻이 된다. I'm a cut below you라고 하면 위의 표현과 같은
의미가 된다. cut down to size란 말도 있는데 이것은 잘난 체
하는 사람의 '콧대를 꺾다' 또는 '별 것 아니라는 사실을 증명하다'는
뜻으로 흔히 쓰이는 말이다. I cut him down to size라고 하면
'내가 그 녀석의 콧대를 꺾어 놨지'란 말이 된다. 그리고
I put him in his place라고 해도 같은 말이 된다.
'난 그를 자기 자리에 앉혔다'는 말이니까 실제 자기 실력이나
지위 이상으로 뻐기는 사람을 원래 자기 위치에 놓는다.
즉, '콧대를 꺾어 놓는다' 또는 '코를 납작하게 만든다'는 뜻이 된다.

Even a worm will turn 지렁이도 밟으면 꿈틀거린다.
* '앉아서 당하지는 않겠다'는 걸 영어로는 뭐라할까?
I'm not going to take it lying down이라는 영어 표현이
있는데 영어에서는 '누워서'란 당한다고 하는 것이 다를 뿐
근본적으론 같다. Let's not take it lying down도 그냥
당하고 있지만은 않겠다는 의지를 나타낸다.

Economy on Steep Slide : 침체국면의 경제
Contrary to the government's expectations, the national economy is on
a sharp decline. The big question is whether it will touch down gently.
Deteriorating exports and many other problems are lying in wait to
make it a rough, rather than soft, landing. Making matters worse, there
are even signs of stagflation, that is rising prices despite a lack of
economic growth.

According to the Bank of Korea, the economy grew 6.7 percent in
terms of gross domestic product (GDP) in the second quarter of this

down from the final quarter of last year, is expected to continue to move
