* down payment - 고가의 장비를 살 때 현금으로 어느 정도 값을
지불하고 나머지 금 액은 정해진 기간 내에 갚아 나가는 제도.

미국에서 아파트 및 집을 구할 때
* Do you take children? 아이들도 받습니까? 란 뜻으로
아이들을 아예 받지 않는 아파트에는 Adults Only
즉 '어른들만 받습니다.'라고 써붙여 놓고
No Vacancy라고 써 붙여놓으면'빈방 없음'이란 뜻으로
들어가 물어볼 필요가 없다. available right now는
'지금 당장 들어갈 수 있는'이란 뜻으로 계약했을 시
바로 입주할 수 있다는 의미.
계약금을 earnest(진지한) money라고 하는데 집을 계약할 때
earnest money도 내고 금융기관에서 집 살 돈의 약80%를 융자받고
나머지 20%는 자기 돈으로 내야 하는 것이 보통인데,
자기 주머니에서 내놓는 돈을 down payment라 한다.

'계약금은 얼마나 내야 하나요?'

Put down의 여러 가지 뜻.
* 새로 집이나 차를 산 사람을 보고 우리는 '현금은 얼마나 냈느냐?'고
흔히 묻곤 한다. 이 때 How much did you put down? 라고 하면 된다.
여기서 put down은 '얼마를 down payment로 지불한다.'는 뜻이다.
put down은 원래 글자 그대로 무엇을 '내려놓다'는 뜻이다.
가구점에서 산 의자를 배달해 온 배달원에게 put it down here. 라고
하면 '그거 여기 내려 놓으세요'란 말이다. 그러나 동양인이라고
깔보는 백인에게 Don't put me down because I'm an Oriental.이라고
하면 '내가 동양인이라고 깔보지 말라'는 말이 된다.
그러니까 put down은 '깔보다'는 뜻으로 쓰인다.
look down on도 같은 뜻으로 쓰인다. 또 put down은 장부에
'기록하다'는 뜻도 된다.
Don't forget to put it down in your checkbook은
'그것을 수표책에 기록하는 것을 잊지 마세요'란 말이 된다.
또 병원에 예약을 할 때 We'll put you down for Friday 2 P.M.
'금요일 오후 2시로 기록(예약)해 두겠습니다.'란 뜻이 된다.
그리고 put down은 반란 같은 것을 '진압하다'는 뜻으로도 쓰인다.

1. down payment: 계약금

One day, a poor man named Scott, came to visit Taylor.
He said, “Taylor, I need your help. I am a poor man, a man with no money.”
Taylor looked at him kindly and answered, “I'll help you. Tell me what's wrong.”
Scott said, “Yesterday I stopped in front of the door of a restaurant.
The restaurant belonged to a rich man.
I only smelled the food.
However, he wanted me to pay him for the food.
And he called the judge.
The judge said I must go to the court today.
Please Taylor, can you help me?”
In the court the rich man began shouting angrily at Scott.
And the judge asked Scott to pay him right now.
Taylor stepped forward and then said, “This poor man is my elder brother. I will pay you instead.”
After he heard this, the rich man smiled, thinking about his payment.
Then Taylor took a bag of money from his belt, a bag of copper coins.
He bent down next to the rich man and shook the bag.
“Listen. Do you hear this sound?” said he.
“Of course I hear it,” shouted the rich man impatiently.
“Well, then,” answered Taylor, “the problem is solved. The debt is paid.
My brother has smelled your food, and you have heard his money.”
The poor man was saved.
어느 날, Scott이라는 한 불쌍한 사람이 Taylor를 찾아왔다.
그는 “Taylor씨, 당신의 도움이 필요해요. 난 돈 한 푼 없는 불쌍한 사람이오.”라고 말했다.
Taylor는 그를 친절하게 쳐다보며, “내가 도와주겠소. 무슨 일인지 내게 말하시오.”라고 대답하였다.
Scott는 “어제 내가 음식점 문 앞에 서 있었거든요.
그 음식점은 어느 부자의 것이었어요.
난 단지 음식 냄새만을 맡았지요.
그러나 그는 날더러 음식값을 내라는 거예요.
그리고는 판사를 불렀어요.
그 판사는 내가 오늘 법정에 가야 한다는 겁니다.
Taylor씨, 나 좀 도와줄 수 있겠어요?”
법정에서 그 부자는 Scott를 향해 화를 내며 소리를 치기 시작하였다.
그리고 판사는 그에게 당장 음식값을 지불하라고 하였다.
Taylor는 앞으로 걸어 나와서 “이 불쌍한 사람은 나의 형이오. 내가 대신 갚아주겠소”라고 말하였다.
부자는 이 말을 듣고 나서 음식값 받을 것을 생각하며 미소를 지었다.
그때, Taylor는 허리춤에서 구리 동전이 든 돈주머니를 꺼냈다.
그는 부자 옆에서 몸을 구부리고 그 돈주머니를 흔들었다.
그는 “들으시오. 이 소리 듣고 있소?”라고 말했다.
그 부자는 “물론, 듣고 있소.”라고 성급하게 외쳤다.
Taylor는 “자, 그럼, 문제는 해결되었군요. 빚진 것 다 갚았소.
내 형은 당신의 음식 냄새를 맡았고, 당신은 형의 돈 소리를 들었소.”
(그렇게 해서) 그 불쌍한 남자는 곤경에서 벗어났다.

How about a down-payment of 30%?
계약금은 30%로 하는 것이 어떻겠습니까?

Down-payment는 어떤 영어사전에 "a part of the full price paid
at the time of buying or delivery, with the rest to be paid
later"라고 알기 쉽게 정의되어 있는데 「계약금」에 해당합니다.
Have in mind는 be thinking, be planning이라고 해도 거의
같습니다. Cash-with-order는 「주문과 동시에
현금으로」지불하는 것. 자신의 의견을 드러내고 싶거나 부드럽게
반대하고 싶을 경우에는 in my opinion, it seems to me, to be
honest with you, to be frank with you, if I may say so 등의
표현을 연결해서 사용합니다.

Mr. West: What do you have in mind?
Mr. Lee: These are our terms. Cash-with-order for the down
payment, and the rest, within one month from the date of the
final delivery.
Mr. West: How about the percentage for the down-payment?
Mr. Lee: Thirty percent.
Mr. West: That'll be a little stiff for us.
Mr. Lee: If you make this down-payment within a week, we'll
give you 5% discount on total value.
Mr. West: Well, in my opinion, these terms are a little
difficult, but let me think about your offer. I'll give you
my reply tomorrow.

알아둘 일
여기서는 이철수씨 측에서 적극적으로 조건을 제시하여 교섭을
리드해 가는 장면인데, 우선 기본적인 조건이 어떤 것인가를
진술하고, 계약금의 문제를 언급하면서, 이것을 지체없이 지불할
경우 가격인하에 까지 연결된다는 것을 말해 주고 상대에게
생각할 여지를 주고 있습니다. 일방적인 조건이 아니라, 어떤
특전이나 재고의 여지를 갖추는 것이 교섭을 원활하게 만드는
요령입니다. 영어에서 difficult라는 것은 불가능 하지는 않지만
곤란하다는 의미로 교섭의 여지가 있다는 것을 암시합니다.
"검토해 보겠습니다"라고 할 때에도 I'll discuss the matter
with our president.라고 말하면 "권한이 위임 되어 있지
않구나"라고 인정받기 때문에 간단하게 I'll think it
over.라든가 I'll reply to you later.라고 하는 편이 훨씬
좋습니다.

이는 스타모빌리티가 J사 지분 인수를 위해 계약금으로 200억원을 J사에 지불했는데, 이를 J사가 곧바로 A 회장 측에 건넨 것이다.
