stalwart는 그 어원의 뜻 「토대」(foundation)가 보여주듯이 깊이 세워지거나 든든히 뿌리박힌 데에서 오는 힘, 난공 불락의 힘, 완전히 신뢰할 수 있는 힘을 암시한다. 사람의 체구·체력에 대해서 쓰이는 경우에는 대단히 센 힘을 언제나 암시하지만, 영웅 같은 골격이라든가 또는 큰 체격을 강조한다.
