Yet there are risks. Hectic competition among colleges could enhance
the quality of education in general but it could also encourage the
emergence of schools seeking only commercial gains. What in effect
these schools will be doing is just selling diplomas. It will be the duties
of the education authorities to protect students from dishonest institutions
trying to take advantage of eased regulations.
그러나 우려되는 문제점도 있다. 대학간의 치열한 경쟁으로 대체적인 교
육의 질은 향상이 될 수 있겠으나 단지 쉽게 돈만을 벌겠다는 대학도 나타
날 수 있다는 것이다. 이러한 성격의 대학들은 단지 졸업장만을 팔려고 할
것이다. 교육부 당국자들은 완화된 규정을 악용하려는 비양심적인 교육기관
으로부터 학생을 보호할 책임을 감당해야 한다.

The information society now upon us requires a high degree of skill
and expertise. One secures his or her social position with this personal
asset, not with diplomas. Accordingly students will have to select
astutely the colleges that best suit their visions and their talents.
우리 곁에 이미 와 있는 정보사회는 높은 수준의 기술과 전문지식을 필요
로 하는 사회다. 사람들은 이제 졸업장이 아닌 개인적인 능력으로 자신의
사회적 지위를 지켜 나가게 된다. 따라서, 학생들은 자신의 이상과 재능에
가장 적합한 대학을 현명하게 선택해야 할 것이다.

☞ 졸업식 ☜
졸업식을 영어로 graduation 이라고 하는데,어원인 gradus 는 라틴
어로 [단계],즉 step 을 뜻한다. gradually 는 [점점 더]라는 뜻이
되고 ,degree(학문의 단계,즉 학위),progress(앞 단게로 가다,즉
진보하다) 등은 여기에서 나온 말이다.
미국에서는 졸업식을 graduation 이라 하지 않고,보통 commenceme-
nt 라고 말한다. 이것은 [개시,시작]이라는 뜻인데,오랜 학업을 끝
내고 한 사람 몫을 할 수 있는 인간으로서 인생을 시작한다는 깊은
뉘앙스가 있는 말이다. 우리나라와는 달리 6월에 졸업식을 하는데,
그날은 검은 cap and gown 으로 정장한 senior(4학년생)들이,학위
와 각 학부 고유의 colorful 한 gown 모습을 한 교수진을 선두로
신록이 눈부신 교정을 parade 하고 대강당으로 향한다.
우선 national anthem (국가) 제창을 하고,목사에 의한 invocation
(기도), 그리고 president's address(학장 축사)를 한 다음 졸업생
들은 한 사람씩 단상으로 올라가서 학장으로부터 직접 diploma(졸
업장)을 받는다. 우리나라 대학의 졸업식보다 훨씬 무게가 있다.
입학하기는 어렵지 않지만 졸업하기는 힘든 미국대학이어서 졸업식
이 그렇게 성대한지도 모른다.

I have no patience with the college graduate who whines that his diploma doesn't
help him get ahead in business. And less patience with the college graduate who tries
to prove that it does.
나는 자신의 졸업장이 사업이 성공하는 데에 도움을 주지 않는다고
불평하는 대학 졸업자를 참을 수가 없다. 그리고 그것이 그렇게 해준다고

South Korean President Kim Dae-jung won this year's Nobel Peace Prize Friday.
김대중 대통령이 올해 노벨 평화상 수상자로 선정됐다.
Kim became the first Korean to receive the coveted Nobel Prize.
한국인으로 노벨상을 받는 것은 김 대통령이 처음이다.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee said Kim was chosen as the
Nobel Prize awardee for his ``work for democracy and human rights
in South Korea and in East Asia in general, and for peace and
reconciliation with North Korea in particular.''
노르웨이 노벨상 위원회는 13일 김 대통령이 북한과의 한반도 평화와
화해를 이뤄내고 한국과 아시아의 민주주의와 인권 상황을 개선한
공로로 올해 노벨 평화상 수상자로 선정됐다고 밝혔다.
``Through his 'sunshine policy', Kim Dae-jung has attempted to
overcome more than 50 years of war and hostility between North
and South Korea,'' the committee said.
노벨상 위원회는 “김 대통령은 일관된 `햇볕정책'으로 50년 이상
지속된 남북한의 전쟁과 적대관계를 해소하기 위해서 힘써왔다"며
``His visit to North Korea gave impetus to a process which has
reduced tension between the two countries.''
"그의 북한 방문은 한 민족 두 국가 사이의 긴장을 완화하는 데
결정적 역할을 했다”고 선정 이유를 밝혔다.
The committee hailed Kim for campaigning for democracy
``despite repeated threats on his life and long periods of
imprisonment under South Korea's autocratic system.''
``His election in 1997 proved that South Korea has become
a genuine democracy.''
노벨상 위원회는 “남한의 독재체제 아래서 수차례 생명의 위협을
느껴가며 오랜 기간 독재정권으로부터 감금과 구속의 억류 생활이
이어지면서도 민주화의 대변자로 자리잡았다"며
"그의 대통령 선출은 한국이 민주주의 국가로 진입한 확실한
징표가 됐다”고 민주화 경력을 높이 샀다.
The committee, apparently conscious of North Korean leader
Kim Jong-il, said it wanted to ``express recognition of the
contributions made by North Korea's and other countries'
leaders to advance reconciliation and possible reunification.''
``Kim also showed considerable commitment in favor of democracy
in Burman and against repression in East Timor.''
위원회는 이 날 수상자 발표자리에서 북한의 김정일 국방위원장을
의식한 듯 “북한과 다른 나라 지도자들도 한반도의 화해와 통일을
위해 기여한 점을 인정한다”며
“김 대통령은 높은 도덕적 결단으로, 미얀마와 동티모르의 민주화를
위해 지도적 역할도 했다"고 덧붙였다.
Kim won the prize from 115 individual and 35 organization nominees,
braving the hottest ever competition since 1901, when the Nobel
Peace Prize was established.
In his run-up to the Nobel award, Kim beat U.S. President Bill Clinton,
who had bridged the now crumbling Middle East peace process,
former Russian Prime Minister Victor Chernomirdin and the Salvation Army.
올해 노벨 평화상은 모두 115명의 개인과 35개 단체가 수상 후보에 올라
1901년 노벨 평화상이 생긴 이래 최고의 경쟁률을 기록했다.
김 대통령은 평화상 수상자로 최종 선정되기까지 중동 평화협상에 노력한
빌 클린턴 미국 대통령, 북아일랜드 평화협정을 주선한 조지 미첼
전 미 상원의원, 발칸 평화에 기여한 빅토르 체르노미르딘 전 러시아 총리,
종교단체인 구세군, 코소보 난민을 받아들인 알바니아 북부도시 쿠커스 등과
치열한 경쟁을 벌인 것으로 알려졌다.
Kim was first nominated for the prize in 1987 by lawmakers in
the United States and Germany and foreign professors who
sympathized with his democracy struggle.
Since then, he has been nominated every year - a total of 14 occasions.
김 대통령은 87년 민주화 투쟁에 공감하던 미국·독일 등지의 의원들과
외국 교수들이 처음으로 평화상 후보로 추천한 뒤 지금까지 계속해서
모두 14차례나 후보에 올랐었다.
The 2000 award ceremony will be held in Oslo on Dec. 10.
But Kim will actually receive his prize in Stockholm, Sweden,
with the awardees of literature, medicine, physics, chemistry and economics.
김 대통령에 대한 노벨 평화상 수상식은 오는 12월10일 노르웨이 오슬로에서 열리며,
문학·의학·물리·화학·경제 등 나머지 노벨상 수상자들과 함께
스웨덴 스톡홀름에서 상을 받게 된다.
The award comprises a gold medal, a diploma and a check for 9 million
Swedish crowns (1 billion won) and Kim must give a lecture
on his achievement within the next six months.
김 대통령은 이번 수상으로 금메달·상장과 함께 900만 크로네(10억원) 가량의
상금을 받게 되며 앞으로 6개월 이내에 수상 업적에 대해 강연해야 한다.
