His position in society is one of enslavement, oppression and discrimination.
On the whole it is only the most back-breaking and most despised jobs that are open to him.
In many states niggers cannot go to the same school or eat at the same table with the white people.
When Roxana tried to comfort his son, it was useless.

Once while hearing a young lady highly praised for her beauty, I asked:
What kind of beauty do you mean?
Merely that of the body, or also that of the mind?

Life moves on, whether we act as cowards or as heroes. Life has no other
discipline to impose, if we would but realize it, than to accept life
unquestioningly. Everything we shut our eyes to, everything we run away
from, everything we deny, or despise, serves to defeat us in the end. What
seems nasty, painful, evil, can become a source of beauty, joy and strength,
if faced with open mind. Every moment is a golden one for him who has the
vision to recognize it as such.

would've been to invite us up
for some of that iced tea.

Bree had started to realize her world was unraveling,
and for a woman who despised loose ends,
that was unacceptable.

and Gabrielle had been losing ground to Juanita ever since.
From the prenuptial agreement,
which she reluctantly signed...
to the selection of wedding music she despised...
to the color of the house paint she hadn't wanted,
Gabrielle had suffered one defeat after another.
And now that Juanita suspected her daughter-in-law of having an affair,
