Firm Measures For Labor's Return
The Korean Confederation of Trade Union(KCTU) has withdrawn from the
Tripartite Committee, comprised of labor, management and government
sectors.
The worry became a reality and even more concerning is that the other large
union organization, the Federation of Korean Trade Union (FKTU), is
preparing to back out this week, as well.
After only 13 months have expired since its creation, the Committee is in
danger of extinction. It will almost certainly cause additional instability in the
labor market.

I'm not sure if Tom's imperturbable spirit is due to toughness or to sheer inability to understand the dangers of the situation.

It may be that the long years of peace and prosperity had produced a sort of national lethargy from which only a supreme danger could awaken the people.

Automobiles have created a real danger for animals which want to cross from one side of a road to another.
Well, there's at least one highway in the world where small animals don't have to risk their life.
The highway runs between the cit

Jean bought a small cellular phone for her boyfriend.
She wrapped the gift and put it on a table.
The next day, all that remained of the present was torn wrapping paper.
The woman searched her apartment for the phone, but found nothing.
She decided to dial the phone's number and heard it ringing where her dog was sleeping.
At first she thought the dog was lying on the phone, but then realized that the phone was ringing inside the dog.
She rushed the dog to the vet, who determined that the dog had indeed swallowed the phone.
The vet told the woman that her dog was not in danger and told her to let nature take its course.
The phone emerged from the dog the next day in perfect working order.
Jean

Some visitors to the United States are surprised to find that many public places are "non-smoking" areas
and that some Americans are almost hostile to smokers.
In many American restaurants, you will be asked, "Smoking or non-smoking?"
indicating which section of the restaurant you wish to sit in.
Recently, the U.S. government has published studies of the dangers of secondhand smoke,
especially for children whose parents smoke at home.

It is obvious that TV is addictive:
Even babies will sit for hours fascinated by the movement and changing colors.
From childhood onwards, when the sounds and pictures have meaning, it is a great temptation to just sit in front of the television.
A ‘good' program holds us because it is interesting; a 'bad' one often keeps us watching because we hope that it will improve or that a ‘better' one will follow.
Two great dangers of this unselective viewing are the way in which our senses of good and bad, right and wrong are gradually dulled and the difficulty of telling fact from fiction.

The captain of a luxury liner was instructing a new crew member on part of his job.
“Your responsibility, sailor, in case of danger, is to yell ‘Man the lifeboats! Man the lifeboats!'”
The sailor practiced it and soon had it down perfectly.
A few hours later, the boat was hit by an iceberg and began sinking.
The sailor yelled, “Woman the lifeboats! Woman the lifeboats!” The captain was surprised.
“What's going on?” he demanded.
“Listen, captain,” the sailor replied, “you fill your boats the way you want, and I'll fill my boats the way I want!”

The real danger starts when utterly unnecessary things become bargains.
There are a huge number of people who just cannot resist bargains and sales.
So long as they think they are getting a bargain, they will buy clothes they will never wear, furniture they have no space for.
Old ladies will buy inline skates and non-smokers will buy pipe-cleaners.
And I once heard of a man who bought an electric circular saw as a bargain and cut off two of his fingers the next day.
But he had no regrets: the saw had been truly cheap.

Elephants living in the jungle or on the plains sometimes sense danger.
At the first hint of danger, elephants will raise their trunks to smell any threat.
When an enemy is about to attack, the trunk may be used to warn the rest of the herd.
This is done by sending a loud trumpet-like sound, which makes the earth shake.
This warns the other elephants in the herd of possible danger.
The trunk plays a vital part in its life.
In fact, it is almost impossible for an elephant to survive if its trunk becomes damaged.

Tales from the past generally associate heroism with physical strength and raw courage in the face of danger.
Recently, however, new definitions of heroism and new kinds of heroes have emerged.

My feeling is that one should look upon life as an adventure, one should burn with the hard, gem-like flame, and one should take risks, one should expose oneself to danger.

The social experiences and values of the old and the young have always been in conflict; if younger people did not question the advice and beliefs of their parents, little change or 'progress' would ever occur.
But with the accelerating speed of change in modern times, the conflicts between members of different generations, or between those people anxious to adjust to change and those less inclined to do so, were in danger of becoming more harmful than helpful.
Furthermore, the very phrase by which these conflicts are described, the 'generation gap', was becoming out of date.

A doctor was in the bathroom of a lunatic asylum watching his mad patients
bathe. Suddenly one of them cried, "It's time for the doctor to bathe." Then another
cried,"Let's drown him!" On his crying, all in the bathroom gathered around the
doctor, with their eyes fixed on him. They insisted on his being drowned.
Seeing his danger, the doctor thought out a trick."All right,my lads," he said.
"But suppose now you give the doctor a good cheer before you drown him."
This reasonable proposition being at once agreed to, a loud cheer resounded
through the building. This unusual noise, needless to say, at once brought the
keepers to the bathroom.

A country within which the divisions have gone too far is a danger to itself; a
country which is too well united is a menace to others.

Scary books like "Killer Salt" trumpet the danger lurking next to the
pepper mill, and food manufacturers have joined the battle with low-sodium
canned goods and salt substitutes like No-Salt.

To a certain extent, doubt is good for the mind. People who doubt are not in danger
of being ruled by emotion. But a man who completely lacks any positive beliefs is often
a useless man, and a life without a belief in something positive is unbearable. Instead
of doubting everything, we should be ready to believe when there is sufficient evidence,
and we should try not judge a case while evidence is lacking. In other words, our mental
attitudes should be "critical" but not "negative".

A country within which the divisions have gone too far is a danger to itself;
a country which is too well united - whether by nature or by device, by honest
purpose or by fraud and oppression - is a menace to others.

Scientists have found both good and had uses for nuclear energy. Our main
source of power when oil is exhausted will probably be atomic power plants. There
is, on the other hand, the danger of thermonuclear weapons almost certain to be used
future wars. There are a few people who blame scientists for the possibility of world
destruction and who feel that the discovery of nuclear energy has been morally wrong.

The danger of vitamin deficiency cannot be overemphasized.

*threaten 위협하다; 어떤 좋지 않은 일이 발생할 것 같다 seem likely to occur; be menacing:
We are aware that danger threatens.

*belittle 과소평가하다 speak lightly of:

One of the greatest dangers of living in large towns is that we have too
many neighbors and human fellowship is too cheap. We are apt to become
wearied of humanity; a solitary green tree sometimes seems dearer to us
than an odd thousand of our fellow citizens. Unless we are hardened,
the millions of eyes begin to madden us; and for ever pushed and jostled
by crowds we begin to take more kindly to Malthus, and are even willing
to think better of Herod and other wholesale depopulators.

If you will ask some one who has at some time acted in a manner for which
he would be punished if it became known, you will find that when discovery
seemed imminent, the person in question repented of his crime. I do not
say that this would apply to the professional thief who expects a certain
amount of prison as a trade risk, but it applies to what may be called
the respectable offender, such as the bank manager who has embezzled in
a moment of stress, or the clergyman who has been tempted by passion into
some sexual irregularity. Such men can forget their crime when there seems
little chance of detection, but when they are found out or in grave danger
of being so, they wish they had been more virtuous, and this wish may give
them a lively sense of the enormity of their sin.

When the newspaper chooses to make a scapegoat of some perhaps quite
harmless person, the results may be very terrible. Fortunately, as yet
this is a fate which most people escape through their obscurity; but as
publicity gets more and more perfect in its methods, there will be an
increasing danger in this novel form of social persecution. This is too
grave a matter to be treated with disdain by the individual who is its
victim, and whatever may be thought of the great principle of the freedom
of the press, I think the line will have to be drawn more sharply than
it is by the existing libel law.

*undaunted 불굴의, 기죽지 않는 not at all discouraged or frightened by danger or difficulty; undismayed:
undaunted by failure

*fatal 치명적인 bringing danger or ruin, or having unpleasant results:
치명상 a fatal wound

*desperate 필사적인 filled with despair and ready to do anything, regardless of danger:
The prisoners became desperate in their attempts to escape.

*stranded 어려운 지경에 빠진 in a very unfavorable position or situation,
especially alone among dangers and unable to get away:
There I was, stranded in a foreign country with no passport or money.

*expose 방치하다; 노출시키다 leave uncovered or unprotected:
Many people were exposed to danger.

Many observers have commented on what seems to be the fact that fear plays
a much smaller part than we should think it must in the life of an animal
which lives dangerously.
Terror he can know, and perhaps he knows it frequently.
But it seems to last only a little longer than the immediate danger it
helps him to avoid, instead of lingering, as in the human being it does,
until it becomes a burden and a threat.
The frightened bird resumes his song as soon as danger has passed, and
so does the frightened rabbit his games.
It is almost as if he knew that "cowards die many times before their
deaths: the valiant never taste of death but once."

*fatal 치명적인 bringing danger or ruin, or having unpleasant results:
It's fatal to stay up working late into the night; you always feel terrible next day.

*potential 가능한; 잠재적인 possible; that may happen or become so, although not actually existing at present:
잠재적인 위험 a potential danger

*crisis 위기 a point or moment of great danger, difficulty, or uncertainty:
The sudden rise in oil led to an economic crisis.

As with all illness prevention is better than cure. A very common danger
signal is the inability to relax. "When you're taking work home, when
you can't enjoy an evening with friends, when you haven't time for
outdoor exercise―that is the time to stop and ask yourself whether
your present life really suits you," says one family doctor.
"Then it's time to join a relaxation class, or take up dancing,
painting or gardening."

Fishermen face a lot of risks in their daily lives.

Working around high-speed machine tools presents certain dangers, and workers must follow safety precautions.

More frequent use of computers will create a serious danger to our
health. First of all, more people will have to wear glasses, because
always staring at computer screens is likely to damage our eyes. Sitting
at computer desks for hours can also cause damage to our backs.
Nevertheless, we won't get enough exercise, for we will often be forced
to spend a long period of time at the computers.

== The Stranger ==
-- Billy Joel
Well we all have a face that we hide away forever
and we take them out and show ourselves when everyone
some are satin some are steel
some are silk and some are leather
they'er the faces of the stranger
but we love to try them on
Well we all fall in love
but we disregard the danger
though we share so many secrets here are some we never tell
why were you so surprised ? that you never saw the stranger
did you ever let your lover see the stranger in yourself
don't be afraid to try again
everyone goes south every now and then woo woo
you've done it why can't someone else ?
you should know by now you've been there yourself

What do you think are the world's greatest problems of the twenty first century?
Many scientists say that the so called "population explosion" and food supply are the most serious dangers to the future of the world.
Those who believe that the worst will happen claim that the world population is growing much faster than its food production.
But not all scientists think so.
Some scientists claim that thanks to the development of technologies the world could produce enough food to feed everybody.

In an ecosystem, cycles of life are continued through the use and reuse of renewable resources.
For example, the amount of water on Earth is limited; this water is cleaned through natural processes by removing contamination.

However, people have been using up nonrenewable resources.
The excessive use of resources results in various problems.
If this phenomenon continues, people's future lives will be in great danger.

Everyone should know by now that drinking alcohol during pregnancy can cause serious physical and mental problems in the unborn child.
Most doctors have told their patients, television announcements have dramatized the dangers, and warning signs have gone up in restaurants and bars.

More than 50,000 babies are born in the U.S. each year with alcohol-related defects.
In about one-fourth of these cases, the damage―ranging from facial deformities to heart abnormalities―is severe enough to be classified as fetal alcohol syndrome.

Though M87 is the first supermassive black hole ever discovered, astronomers are convinced that such objects lie at the heart of many galaxies.
The powerful forces unleashed as the holes gobble up stars and gas may be the source of quasars, mysterious beacons of light so bright that they're visible across the universe.

In recent years, researchers have made significant progress in nailing down the underlying science of anxiety.
In just the past decade, they have come to appreciate that whatever the factors that trigger anxiety, it grows out of a response that is hardwired in our brains.
They have learned, among other things:
·There is a genetic component to anxiety; some people seem to be born worriers.
·Brain scans can reveal differences in the way patients who suffer from anxiety disorders respond to danger signals.
·Due to a shortcut in our brain's information-processing system, we can respond to threats before we become aware of them.
·The root of an anxiety disorder may not be the threat that triggers it but a breakdown in the mechanism that keeps the anxiety response from careering out of control.

Before we delve into the latest research, let's define a few terms.
Though we all have our own intuitive sense of what the words stress and fear mean, scientists use these words in very specific ways.
For them, stress is an external stimulus that signals danger, often by causing pain.
Fear is the short-term response such stresses produce in men, women or lab rats.
Anxiety has a lot of the same symptoms as fear, but it's a feeling that lingers long after the stress has lifted and the threat has passed.

There was a dog which was fond of eating eggs. Mistaking a shell- fish
for an egg one day, he opened his mouth wide and bolted it with one
great gulp. The weight of it in his stomach caused him intense pain.
“It serves me right,” he said, “for thinking that anything round must
be an egg.” People who rush things without using judgment run
themselves into strange and unexpected dangers.

The human brain responds to sudden fright by signaling the adrenal glands to
release more adrenaline, also known as epinephrine, into the bloodstream. This
substance, often called the "fight or flight hormone," prepares the body for
instant exertion. It makes the heart beat faster, stimulates the circulation,
and relaxes the bronchial passages so they can send more air through the lungs.
It can all happen very quickly because this is the body's life-preserving
response to sudden danger.

Parents cannot simply turn their children loose in front of the computer screen.
There are too many people eager to use the internet to influence and control the minds of children.
Parents need to be aware of that danger and protect their children by buying software designed to *filter out harmful influences or experiences.
There is, for example, software that can filter out websites that teach children how to make bombs.
Parents are also able to buy software that can protect children from suicide sites.
Similarly, several software packages currently on sale can filter out all harmful material on websites.
*filter out : 걸러내다.

For the present, it is nuclear weapons that cause the most serious danger.
Even if we succeed in abolishing nuclear weapons, however, our work to keep peace will not be done.
It will never be done until we have succeeded in abolishing war.
To do this, we need to persuade mankind to settle international conflicts in a new way, not by force, but by agreement in accordance with principles of law.

Whales in the ocean seem to send a sound to one another.
Each whale has its own song and communicates with other whales using the song.
Similarly, mother lions make gentle sounds to call their babies.
They use other sounds to warn the young animals about danger.
The songs of birds also carry messages.
In one song they may be attracting their mates.
In another song they may be saying, “This is my garden. Stay out.”

He wants me beholden to him? No.
We have to make him to come crawling to me.
What's his weakness?
His fortune.
재산
Wouldn't you say that's his strength?
Not if it's slipping away.
How do you make $40 billion disappear overnight?
We can't, but maybe we can create
the illusion that it's in danger.

I am the only one who can protect you. Don't you see that?
You have no idea how much danger you're in.

- Hello? - Hey, it's me.
- Jack, where are you? - I'm still in the West Side.

There's been a complication. They're working on it now.
Listen. Do not let anyone near Janet who doesn't belong there.
- What do you mean? - I think she might be in danger.
- From whom? - I'll explain later.
- Until then do not mention this to anyone. - OK.
- I'll be there soon. - OK.

- Think she knows where Kim is?
- It's my only chance.
I'm meeting Teri at the hospital now. Get me that name.
Yes, hello. My name is Jack Bauer. I'm a federal agent.
I'm coming to you now but I wanted to give you a heads-up on one of your patients.
I think her life might be in danger. Yes, I'll be there in ten minutes. Her name is Janet York.

What did you mean before about her being in danger? Danger from whom?
Someone who doesn't want her talking to me.
You must be Jack.
Alan, yeah. This is my husband Jack.
Alan's been a great friend tonight, Jack.

- Thank you. Thank you very much.

Walk with me for a sec.
What is it, Jack?
Why is there all this security here?
Who wants to hurt Janet?
Today someone is going to try and kill David Palmer.
What?
That's why I was brought in last night.
Well, why is Janet in danger?

Because she was with Kim.

He was just here. He promised he wouldn't leave.

We should call Secret Service.
If we do, the people holding Teri and Kim will think Jack gave the order.
I hate to say it, but it's not our problem. We have one mandate - protect Palmer.
- We gotta make the call now. - Wait!
Jack wouldn't put Palmer's life in danger.
Let's try to find out more before we do anything.
Are you giving me an order not to call Secret Service?
No, you're right.

Then they asked me to start sending messages.
What messages?
Mostly about Jack. Then about the key card. I didn't know this was gonna happen. You have to believe that.
OK, fine. We do. But now you have to help us.

No, I'm not saying anything. Not until I get agency counsel.

- Your own people called you in as a suspect. - What?
Tony Almeida from your office called one of my men and told us you presented a threat.
Almeida doesn't have the same information that I've got. You're running out of time.
You had a shooter disguised as a photographer in here. He's escaped.

Fortunately, she's still alive,
and they're doing everything they can to keep her that way.
I know it won't be easy to put this out of our minds, but we don't have a choice.
We still believe that Palmer's life is in danger,
which means we all have to get back to work now.

Hello, David. Since you fired me from your staff, I assume this is a social call.
I need to talk to you, in person.
- Why's that? - I got a very disturbing call today.

Are you threatening me? Is that what it's come to after all these years?

It's come to whatever it takes to get you over here now.
