Each year, thousands of Americans die from fires. In too many of the
cases, death occurs because so much skin is burned away that vital body
functions are disrupted. Essential fluids ooze out, and natural defenses are too
weakened to fight off bacterial infection. To prevent these complications,
doctors try to cover burn sites with skin grafts from undamaged portions of the
patient's body, but often there is too little skin left and they have to resort
to using skin from pigs or cadavers. Being foreign tissue, these grafts are
usually rejected in three to 25 days. The ideal solution would be artificial
skin, a goal that has eluded scientists. But last week a team of Boston
researchers announced they had a successful skin substitute made from a
startling mixture of ingredients: cowhide, shark cartilage and plastic.

장고 is a drum that is shaped like an hourglass and is the chief
percussion instrument of Korea.
장고는 두 개의 머리를 가진 모래 시계 같은 모양을 하고 있는 우리나
라의 대표적인 타악기 입니다.
The name is derived from the words '장'and '고'or stick and drum.
장고라는 이름은 막대기를 뜻하는 '장'과 북을 의미하는 '고'가 합쳐
져서 장고라고 합니다.
It is roughly between 40 and 60 centimeters in length and about
20 to 30 centimeters in diameter.
장고는 길이가 약 40~60 센티미터 정도 되고 또 북머리의 지름은 약
20~30 센티미터 정도 입니다.
It is carved from paulownia wood and this hourglass shaped instr-
ument is entirely hollow.
장고는 오동 나무를 깎아서 만들고 모래시계 모양의 악기의 속은 텅텅
비어 있습니다.
Teh two circular heads of the drum are covered with animal skin
and the heads are laced to each other with cords that zig zag
tween the two areas.
장고의 둥근 두 개의 머리는 동물 가족으로 덮혀 있고 두 표면 사이에
지그 재그 모양으로 실로 엮어 있지요.
These cords can be manipulated by a leather strap to adjust the
head tension and it is the amount of tension which controls the
tone of the drum beat.

The drum heads are believed to have been originally made of hors-
eskin. The skin is stretched thin on the right thick on the left.

두Т게 잡아 늘인 것 입니다.
Today the right drum head is made of dog skin or sheep skin while
the left is made of cowhide.

on the floor.

the right side is struck with a bamboo stick.

The palm of a hand produces a deep soft and hollow sound while
the bamboo stick achieves a sharp stinging and hard sound.

대나무로 만든 채로 치면 날카롭고 예리하고 딱딱한 소리를 내게 되죠
This instrument is used to privide a stable rhythmic beat and
tempo for other instruments and performers.
이 악기는 다른 악기나 연주자들을 위해서 안정 되고 리듬감있는 장단
과 박자를 만들어 주는데 쓰입니다.
This instruments goes back a long way in history.

It appeared as early as around 37 B.C. - 668 A.D. during the 고구
려 period.
장고는 서기 전 37년에서부터 서기 668년 경에 고구려 시대에서 그 모

They are portrayed in many paintings and in artifacts from the신라
period of 57 B.C.- 935 A.D.

장고 is still very common in Korean folk music.
