Comparatively few cities in the United States have competing
newspapers today, a major change from 1900, when most large
cities had more than two newspapers.
오늘날 미국에서는 비교적 적은 숫자의 도시가 서로 경쟁하는 여러 신문들을
가지는데, 그것은 1900년으로부터의 큰 변화이다. 그런데 그 때는 대부분의

위 문장에서 주어는 dispute이고 동사가 stems이죠.
stems from ~라고 하면 ~에서 유래하다, 생기다는 의미죠.
그래서 위의 경우 '한국과 일본 사이의 오랜 독도 분쟁은 두 나라사이
중간쯤 위치한 바위 섬에 대한 소유권(claim) 경쟁에서 유래한다'는 것이죠.
stem은 원래 줄기라는 의미죠.
stem from이라고 하면 ~로부터 줄기가 나오는 것이므로
'~에서 유래하다'는 의미가 되죠.

step better than those of other companies. For those who fail to compete
successfully, their very survival can be in question.
