국내시장의 제1차 거래단계에서 기업 상호간에 거래되는 commodities(상품)의
평균적인 price change(가격변동)를 측정하기 위해 작성되는 지수.
옛 이름인 'wholesale price index(도매물가지수)'에서의 'wholesale(도매)'의
의미는 wholesaler(도매상) 또는 대리점에서의 판매를 의미하는 것이 아니라
대량거래가 이루어지는 생산자 단계의 판매를 의미한다는 뜻이다.
따라서 지수작성에 사용되는 가격은 제1차 거래단계의 가격, 즉 domestic
products(국내생산품)의 경우는 value-added tax(부가가치세)를 제외한
producer sale price(생산자판매가격, 공장도가격)를 원칙으로 하고 있다.
반면에 수입품의 경우는 importer sale price(수입업자 판매가격)를 원칙으로
하고, 이것이 불가능할 경우에는 다음 거래 단계인 대량도매상 또는
중간도매상의 판매가격을 이용한다. 그 대상범위가 광범위해 일반적인
national economy(국민경제) 물가수준의 변동을 측정할 수 있고 이에 따른
commodities의 전반적인 수급동향을 파악할 수 있기 때문에 보통
general objective index(일반목적지수)라고 한다.

이어서 향후 전망의 순으로 전개가 이루어지는 것이 수순입니다.
물가를 포함하여 어떠한 수치나 가격 등의 변동과 관련해서는
지금까지 많이 살펴 보았기 때문에 자세히는 다루지 않겠습니다.
이러한 부문의 기사에서 그냥 보면 지나치기 쉬우나 (likely to
overlook) 신경 써서 보아두어야 할 부분은 물가의 변동을
설명하면서 짚고 넘어가는 산업의 각 부문에 대한 영문 표현입니다.
예컨대 예문에서 등장하고 있는 daily commodities라든가 public
utility와 같은 것들은 그대로 외워 사용할 수 있는 것들입니다.
이들 표현은 해석이 된다고 해서 그냥 지나치기는 쉬우나 나중에
영어로 표현해야 될 필요가 있을 때는 좀처럼 쉽게 생각나지 않는
것들이므로 주의를 기울이시기 바랍니다.
예문에서 등장하고 있는 표현 몇 가지를 살펴 보면 우선
spiraling이 나오고 있는 것을 알 수 있는데 spiral은 소용돌이
또는 소용돌이 치는 모양을 나타내는 단어로서 물가를 설명하는데
사용된다면 이는 급상승(강하)하는 것을 묘사하는 데 사용되는
경우입니다. 따라서 spiraling price hike는 물가가 치솟는 것을
생생하게 나타내 주는 영문 표현입니다. 가격 또는
경제지표(economic indicators)의 급변동을 나타내는 데에는
약방의 감초처럼 사용되고 있는 것이므로 잘 알아 두시기 바랍니다.
반대 표현으로서는 nose-dive와 같은 것이 있다는 것은 기억하고
계시겠지요?
Stem from ~은 ~으로부터 발생하다 (arise from)이고 melt-down은
붕괴하다, 무너지다라는 표현을 녹아 내린다는 말로 비유적으로
표현한 것이므로 단어 뜻만 알아 두면 됩니다.
Subdue는 가라 앉다, "수그러들다"라는 의미이므로 예문에서는
압력(pressure)이 줄어 들다가 됩니다.
Utility charges는 전기(electricity), 가스(gas),
상하수도(water supply and drainage), 교통(transportation) 등
공익설비 사업체(public utilities)가 제공하고 있는 서비스 이용
요금(service charges) 즉, 공공 요금을 가리키는 말입니다. 매우
유용한 표현이므로 몇 번 써보고 기억해 두시기 바랍니다.
Soar to record high 역시 그대로 기억해 두시면 됩니다. 그 뒤에
등장하는 stir concern about은 ~에 대한 우려를 부추기다, 불러
일으키다라는 표현으로 물가 상승이나 사회 불안(social
unrest)과 관련된 기사에서는 전형적으로 등장하고 있는 것 중의
하나입니다.
이제 어떤 부문에서 물가가 오르고 있는지를 한 번 살펴보기로
하겠습니다.

있습니다만 콩글리시는 아닙니다.
Cross-country buses라는 표현보다는 inter-city bus 또는
inter-city transportation이라는 표현이 더 많이 사용되고
있다는 것 정도를 참고로 알아 두시면 됩니다. 그 외에도 택시
기본 요금은 위에서와 같이 basic fare라 해도 되고 minimum
fare라고 하는 경우도 많습니다.
미래의 상태를 전망할 때 be expected to ~가 사용되고 있는 것과
go up an average of ~ (평균 ~ 정도 상승하다)라는 표현도 함께
알아 두시기 바랍니다.
