During a visit to my son and daughter-in-law in Orange, Texas,
I commented on some items for sale there that weren't available In the small Colorado town where I lived.
Stan and Denise later presented me with several things I had admired, but they refused reimbursement.
Before I left for home, I put a check into a kitchen cabinet.
Back in Colorado, I got a phone call from Stan.
I insisted that they keep the money, but he said they'd never cash the check.
“Besides, Mom,” my son added, “you forgot to sign it.”

The first year of my college was terrible for me.
I didn't know how to handle myself.
I had a growing fear that I might flunk out.
The turnaround came one day during my second semester, on a day when my English professor was returning some essay papers to the class.
She held mine up, and I could see all the red marks and comments she had put on it.
I thought, “Oh, what is she going to do? Criticize my work in front of all these other students?”
Instead, she said, “Your grammar and spelling need a lot of work, Arthur, but this is an example of a very well-organized paper.”
Surely she had no idea what she had done for me.
She had blessed me with an affirmation.
She had shown me I could do something.

Dr. Ward, a famous paleontologist specializing in mass extinction, says:
“We have finally said out loud what we have thought for so long.

His colleague Dr. Brownlee comments:

Almost all other environments in the universe are terrible for life.
It's only in the Garden-of-Eden like Earth that it can exist.”

Last night there was a long and detailed personal message on my machine from a teacher explaining why "David" had been transferred to her class.
There were some comments about his unacceptable behavior and a request that I call the school to discuss the problem.
The caller did not mention the name of the school and there was no number, so I was unable to let her know that she had reached the wrong person.
When that mother does not return the call, the teacher will assume she is not interested, which will be a black mark against her.

At a trial in Detroit's Recorder's Count, a young woman who had accused the
defendant of making an improper proposal was asked to state the question that
allegedly had been asked. It embarrassed her to repeat it, so she was permitted to
write it on a piece of paper. After the judge, prosecutor and defense counsel had
read it, it was passed to the jury. Each juror read it, and gave it to the next juror.
After an attractive female juror had read it, she attempted to pass it to the man on
her right, but found him dozing. Without comment, she nudged him and gave him
the slip of paper. The awakened juror read the note, smiled at her, nodded and put
the note in his pocket!

Khomeini has avoided comment on the hostage issue since February, when he
turned the matter ever to Parliament. He may have decided to intervene again in a
effort to eliminate a divisive and paralyzing issue between Iran's secular moderates,
who favor a quick end to the crisis, and the religious hard-liners.

All great books contain boring portions, and all great lives have
contained uninteresting stretches. Imagine a modern publisher confronted
with the Old Testament as a new manuscript submitted to him for the
first time. It is not difficult to think what his comments would be,
for example, on the genealogists.
"Mr. dear sir," he would say, "this chapter lacks pep; you can't expect
your reader to be interested in a mere string of proper names of persons
about whom you tell him so little. You have begun your story, I will
admit, in fine style, and at first I was very favorably impressed, but
you have altogether too much wish to tell it all. Pick out the high
lights, take out the superfluous matter, and bring me back your
manuscript when you have reduced it to a reasonable length."

Several neighbors had gathered for dinner, and the conversation turned to
pets. Our hostess commented that she had the dumbest dog ever.
"Any dog that digs up the same rosebush 20 times has to be pretty dumb,"
she said. Everyone seemed to agree, until the 75-year-old grandmother
of the neighborhood remarked, "I'm not too surprised at the dog, but
I am a little concerned about the person who planted the rosebush that
many times."

Many observers have commented on what seems to be the fact that fear plays
a much smaller part than we should think it must in the life of an animal
which lives dangerously.
Terror he can know, and perhaps he knows it frequently.
But it seems to last only a little longer than the immediate danger it
helps him to avoid, instead of lingering, as in the human being it does,
until it becomes a burden and a threat.
The frightened bird resumes his song as soon as danger has passed, and
so does the frightened rabbit his games.
It is almost as if he knew that "cowards die many times before their
deaths: the valiant never taste of death but once."

Today I am writing with still another request. Enclosed is a report on

I thought I should comment on the situation.

My best school report was in the first grade from Mrs. Varulo. First,
she told my parents about my amazing physical energy: "Lisa never tires
of chasing and punching her classmates." Next, she praised my class
participation and active, questioning mind: "After every
instruction--even one as simple as 'Please take out your pencils'--Lisa
asks 'Why?'" Mrs. Varulo was so impressed with my vocabulary that she
commented, "I don't know where Lisa has picked up some of the words she
uses, certainly not in my classroom." Somehow she even knew I would
become a famous fiction-writer. "More than any other student I have ever
had," she wrote, "Lisa is a born liar."

Often a novelist is strongly committed to a certain character or cause in the novel.
The student should try to show how he reveals his opinions.
Does he use rhetoric, emotional prose or calm reasoned argument?
Does he make it clear that he sympathizes with one character more than another?
If so, how does he do this - by the character's speech and actions or by direct comment by the author in his role of omniscient narrator?

Probably the most famous film commenting on 20th century technology is
Modern Times, made in 1936. Charlie Chaplin was motivated to make the
film by a reporter who, while interviewing him, happened to describe
working conditions in industrial Detroit. Chaplin was told that healthy
young farm boys were lured to the city to work on automotive assembly
lines. Within 4 or 5 years, these young men's health was destroyed by
the stress of work in the factories. The film opens with a shot of a
mass of sheep making their way
down a crowded ramp. Abruptly the scene shifts to a scene of factory
workers jostling one another on their way to a factory. However, the
rather bitter note of criticism in the implied comparison is not
sustained. It is replaced by a gentler note of satire.

They will find, if they submit an outline or questionnaire to their
classmates for criticism, that other students make comments similar to
some they themselves may have made in discussing previously published
research.

As such, there is a heated discussion surrounding this on social media such as comments on articles related to the "Nth Room" incident, various online communities, and Twitter.

Mannesmann spokesman Manfred Soehnlein refused to comment Saturday on
the reports, calling them speculative. But he suggested that Mannesmann
would dig in its heels and reject any such offer from Vodafone - its
partner in three mobile phone businesses in Europe.

Moore, a former New Zealand prime minister, said the Web sites, many of
which are anonymous, copied design features and logos from the WTO's
official pages on the Internet.
``This causes confusion among visitors looking for genuine information
from the WTO, disrupting a much-needed dialogue,'' he said in a
statement.
``The WTO and its members uphold the right of others to criticize and
comment on WTO affairs, including the right to protest publicly,'' said
Moore, who has sought to discuss issues frequently with the
organization's critics.
``Confusing the public is another matter. Contrary to critics'
allegations, the WTO is highly transparent,'' he declared.

Many of them are like the most recent local case filed in Superior Court
on Nov. 12. Harken Energy Corp., a gas and oil exploration company, sued
numerous Does who posted online comments in July about a drilling venture
in Colombia. The suit, which includes libel and trade secrets claims, is
aimed at online identities such as ``walking_soft'' and
``FearViciousRaptorRippingSlashing'', whoever and wherever they may be.

Caught in the middle of this litigation fireball are service providers
such as America Online Inc. and operators of the message boards, most
notably Santa Clara-based Yahoo. Once the lawsuits are filed, companies
can subpoena these firms to discover the identity of the John Does
posting their comments -- stripping Web denizens of their anonymity.

Further boosting stocks were comments by Federal Reserve Bank of New York
President William McDonough, who called the jobs report ``very good
news'' and did not find wages raising concerns about near term inflation.
McDonough is a voting member of the Fed's interest-rate setting group,
known as the Federal Open Market Committee, which meets on Dec. 21. The
Fed has already raised interest rates three times this year. Many Wall
Street do not foresee any further hikes until next year.

Kevin: Oh, you're a French woman.

Kevin: You know what?

Sarah: He knows you from summer camp.

Jake : Traditionally, IT'S BEEN MY POLICY NOT TO COMMENT TO THE
PRESS ...
... because it is my conviction that the press prints to
sell, it doesn't print to inform.
It doesn't print the truth.
Amanda: I have a rather good source, Mr. Conrad.
His name is Bobby Bishop.
You do know Bobby Bishop, don't you, sir?
Jake : Yes, of course I know Bobby Bishop.
And I WILL STAND BY HIM.
