Archibald Spooner was well known in England for his slips of the tongue.
He was a teacher at Oxford University and a clergyman as well.
Dr. Spooner suffered from nervousness and poor eyesight.
This may have made it difficult for him to see words correctly and to repeat them accurately.
One time he told a student that he had “hissed the mystery lectures” when he meant to say “missed the history lectures.”
He told another student that the young man had “tasted a worm.”
He meant to say that the student had “wasted a term.”
Today, this particular type of pronunciation error is often called a “Spoonerism.”

If you will ask some one who has at some time acted in a manner for which
he would be punished if it became known, you will find that when discovery
seemed imminent, the person in question repented of his crime. I do not
say that this would apply to the professional thief who expects a certain
amount of prison as a trade risk, but it applies to what may be called
the respectable offender, such as the bank manager who has embezzled in
a moment of stress, or the clergyman who has been tempted by passion into
some sexual irregularity. Such men can forget their crime when there seems
little chance of detection, but when they are found out or in grave danger
of being so, they wish they had been more virtuous, and this wish may give
them a lively sense of the enormity of their sin.
언젠가 알려지면 처벌을 받을 짓을 한 사람에게 물어보면, 문제의 그 사람은
발각이 임박했을 때 죄를 뉘우쳤다는 사실을 알게 될 것이다. 이것은 직업상의
위험 부담으로 어느 정도의 감옥살이를 예상하고 있는 전문적인 도둑에게는
해당되지 않지만, 경제적인 압박을 느낀 순간 돈을 횡령한 은행의 부장이나
열정에 못 이겨 성적으로 탈선한 성직자 같은 소위 점잖은 범법자들에게
해당된다. 그런 사람들은 적발될 가능성이 희박해 보일 때는 범죄를 잊을
수 있지만, 적발되었거나 그렇게 될 위험이 클 때, 좀더 덕을 쌓지 못했던
것을 후회하고, 이런 후회는 그들의 죄가 얼마나 큰 것인지를 실감하게 해준다.
