After meeting Chun in jail Tuesday, his lawyers hinted that he
may give up his right to appeal the death sentence handed down to
him the previous day.

The "trial of the century" at the Seoul District Court has entered its
final stage, with the prosecutors demanding the death sentence for
former president Chun Doo-hwan and life imprisonment for Chun's
successor, Roh Tae-woo. Sentences ranging from 10 years to life term
were demanded for the other 14 defendants.
서울 지방법원에서 열린 "세기의 재판"은 검찰이 전두환전대통령에게 사
형을, 그리고 전씨의 후임자인 노태우전대통령에게는 무기징역을 구형함으

Notwithstanding, the sentences demanded for the former presidents
and their accomplices are a measure of the penalties that will be
handed down if the judges accept the prosecution charges. At the same
time, capital punishment for Chun is mandatory under the Criminal
Code, because he was the mastermind of the military revolt and
treason.

suppression of the Kwangju uprising in 1980 depends largely on the
judgment of the Dec. 12, 1979 mutiny.
