sure와 certain은 흔히 바꿔 쓸 수 있다. 그러나 sure는 단순하고 일반적인 말로, 의심 또는 주저함이 없는 것을 암시한다. 즉, 다만 주관적인 확신의 상태를 강조할 뿐이다. 한편 certain은 특별한 근거·증거에 의한 확신을 강하게 암시한다. 따라서 certain이 한결 뜻이 강한 말이다.
I am sure(certain) that he is honest./ He is sure(certain) to lose./ I felt for time sure of his innocence; I am now certain of his guilt.
sure와 certain은 이렇게 서술 용법에서 흔히 바뀌어 쓰일 수 있는데, 한정 용법에서 sure는 a sure aim(꼭 맞히는 겨냥)처럼 ‘확실한, 실수 없는’의 뜻이고, certain은 There is no certain cure for his disease.와 The soldier faced certain death.처럼 ‘믿을 수 있는, 피할 수 없는’의 뜻을 나타내기도 한다. 그러나 대개 A certain person phoned.와 He had a certain charm.에서처럼 ‘어떠한, 어떻다고 꼬집어 말할 수 없는’이라는 전혀 다른 뜻으로도 쓰인다.
confident는 특히 어떤 기대에 대한 확신(certainty, sureness)이 견고한 것, 굳은 신념을 강조한다.
He's confident he'll win./ We are confident of success./ He feels confident of passing(confident that he will pass) the examination.
positive는 특히 자기의 의견이나 결론이 정확하다는 확고한 신념, 거의 독단적이 될 정도의 신념의 암시한다.
Are you positive it was after midnight?/ He's too positive in his beliefs./ As I can't be certain, I won't be positive.(확실하지 않아서 단언하지 않으련다.) ~21
