Do you take COD order? COD로 주문 할 수 있습니까?
* 우편을 이용하여 상품을 주문해 본 경험이 있는 사람은 COD가
무엇인지 알고 있겠지만 아직도 COD가 무슨 말인지 모르는
사람이 많다. COD란 cash on delivery 또는 collect on delivery의
약자인데 물건을 delivery할 때 주문한 사람으로부터 cash를 받거나
현금이 아니더라도 check나 money order같은 대금을 collect하여
판매하는 방법을 의미한다.
C.O.D는 '대금상환 배달' 이라는 말로서 미국에서는 Collect On
Delivery의 약자이고 영국에서는 Cash On Delivery의 약자로 사용합니
다. 이것은 우체국에서 손님이 물건을 부칠때 돈을 내지 않고 물건을
받을 때 돈을 지불하는 방식의 제도입니다. 예를 들어서 Please send
this parcel C.O.D. (이 소포를 대금상환으로 보내주십시요.) 라고 하
면 소포를 받은 사람이 요금을 내게 되어 있습니다. 이 밖에도 우편제
도에 따른 용어 몇가지를 소개 해 드리겠습니다.
1) C.O.D : 대금상환 배달
2) Express Mail : 속달우편
3) Special Delivery : 속달 (특별히 보내지는 것)
4) Registered Mail : 등기우편
5) Parcel : 소포
6) Insured Mail : 보험을 가입한 우편물

Down-payment는 어떤 영어사전에 "a part of the full price paid
at the time of buying or delivery, with the rest to be paid
later"라고 알기 쉽게 정의되어 있는데 「계약금」에 해당합니다.
Have in mind는 be thinking, be planning이라고 해도 거의
같습니다. Cash-with-order는 「주문과 동시에
현금으로」지불하는 것. 자신의 의견을 드러내고 싶거나 부드럽게
반대하고 싶을 경우에는 in my opinion, it seems to me, to be
honest with you, to be frank with you, if I may say so 등의
표현을 연결해서 사용합니다.

알아둘 일
여기서는 이철수씨 측에서 적극적으로 조건을 제시하여 교섭을
리드해 가는 장면인데, 우선 기본적인 조건이 어떤 것인가를
진술하고, 계약금의 문제를 언급하면서, 이것을 지체없이 지불할
경우 가격인하에 까지 연결된다는 것을 말해 주고 상대에게
생각할 여지를 주고 있습니다. 일방적인 조건이 아니라, 어떤
특전이나 재고의 여지를 갖추는 것이 교섭을 원활하게 만드는
요령입니다. 영어에서 difficult라는 것은 불가능 하지는 않지만
곤란하다는 의미로 교섭의 여지가 있다는 것을 암시합니다.
"검토해 보겠습니다"라고 할 때에도 I'll discuss the matter
with our president.라고 말하면 "권한이 위임 되어 있지
않구나"라고 인정받기 때문에 간단하게 I'll think it
over.라든가 I'll reply to you later.라고 하는 편이 훨씬
좋습니다.
