The chaebol are likened to an octopus which with its tentacles
reaches out and grabs profits wherever they may be. Their Japanese
counterparts, the zaibatsu, also played a key role in achieving the
fabulous economic development of that nation. Unlike Japan's large
business groups, however, the Korean chaebol are owned and managed
by their founders' families.

Competition is an important part of development in many ways. At the
personal level, competition allows us to become the best individual we
can be. By competing with others in sports, for example, we can raise our
level of athletic performance. In business, competition controls the
market by making companies develop new ideas to ensure survival. Within
industries, companies are always trying to develop products that are one
step better than those of other companies. For those who fail to compete
successfully, their very survival can be in question.
