Traveling around the country I find that more and more people have an urge to pry into such difficult subjects as science, philosophy, religion and political theory.
More often than not, however, this urge soon dries up.
People find that the book which they open with high hopes of enlightenment turns out to be beyond their grasp.
Actually, any book intended for the general reader can be understood if you approach it in the right way.
What is the right approach?
The answer lies in one important rule of reading.
You should read a book through superficially before you try to master it.

Bing Crosby writes of an experience he had while traveling by train through the
Southwest many years ago.
Our train was stopped, and we were told there'd be a wait, so I walked up and down

rascal Bim Crosland's aboard. They say he's quite a singer, but as far as

on our door. It was the brakeman. He eyed me with a twinkle and said, "You
hoaxed me, didn't you? You're Bim Crosland yourself! Just for that, you've got to

Some people feel that reading "for pleasure" (anything not directly
connected to a job or immediately practical) is a waste of time. Spending
hours with a book, they think, is unproductive dreaming. For example,

tone implies that anyone with time to read book is somehow an idler.
