go overboard
- do something in excess
He really went overboard with the birthday party.

Suppose it's your birthday and you send out an invitation like this:
IT'S MY BIRTHDAY
Please come to my party on May 3, 2001 at 29 minutes and 38 seconds past 6 p.m.

One of two things will happen:
1.Everybody will arrive at 29 minutes and 38 seconds past 6 and get stuck in your doorway.
2.They will think you're quite strange and decide not to come at all.
Of course, the seconds are too short to worry about, so leave them out.
A few minutes don't matter so much, so just say "half past six" or "6:30".
On the other hand, a year is so long that everyone knows what year you are talking about.
So you don't really need to put the year in, either.
When you leave these extra details out, it gives you room on your invitation to put much more important things:
IT'S MY BIRTHDAY

Pleas come to my party on May 3, at 6:30 p.m. and Don't forget to bring me a big present

I'm having a birthday party on Friday. Would you like to come?

You are a member of your family, a player on the community baseball team,
and a student in your school. You are also a citizen of your country. In
short, you occupy several different positions in the complex structure of
society. This means you should play many roles in different situations.
Generally, you have little difficulty performing each of your roles
because you know what is expected of you. This knowledge guides you
through your daily interactions.
But sometimes you will get caught in a conflict. Each role of yours makes
demands on you, and you may be asked to play two or more roles at the
same time. When many roles make conflicting demands on you, you may feel
quite uncomfortable and at times frustrated. For example, your family is
going on a picnic this coming Sunday. But your best friend wants you to
join his or her birthday party on the same day. When such role conflicts
occur, you need to do more important things first. Thus, the ability to
decide what to do in what order is an essential skill to fulfill multiple
social roles.

When many roles make conflicting demands on you, you may feel quite uncomfortable and at times frustrated.
For example, your family is going on a picnic this coming Sunday.
But your best friend wants you to join his or her birthday party on the same day.
When such role conflicts occur, you need to do more important things first.
Thus, the ability to decide what to do in what order is an essential skill to fulfill multiple social roles.
