Most weeds are harmful, unwanted plants.
But a Danish biotech company has adapted one plant to help save lives.
Scientists in Copenhagen have genetically modified the plant
so that it changes from its normal green color to red when its roots touch nitrogen dioxide, a gas that leaks out of buried land mines and unexploded weapons.
Many of these explosives can remain active for over 50 years, emitting nitrogen dioxide all the while.
Getting rid of the mines from the ground is tedious, painstaking work.
But the color-changing plant, expected to be used regularly within two years, does present a cost-effective alternative to the most common detection methods currently available ― humans with metal detectors and mine-sniffing dogs.
