[比較] stop, cease, pause, quit, discontinue, desist
My watch stopped./ Oh! do stop talking that way!
The war had ceased./ All life has ceased.
The noise stops(or ceases)처럼 할 수 있다. One stops a car에서 cease를 쓰려면, One ceases driving a car처럼 한다.
He paused to tie his shoe.
He quit his job for a better position.
quit에는 stop의 뜻과 cease의 뜻이 있어, He quit working이라고 하면, stopped working(<그 날 하루의 일 따위> 일을 그만두었다)의 뜻도, ceased working(일을 아주 그만 두었다, 은퇴했다)의 뜻도 된다.
discontinue a business (or a friendship, or a correspondence, or a subscription to a journal, or drinking intoxication liquors)/ He has discontinued the practice of law.
desist from further questioning/ He had made two attempts to shave but his hand had been so unsteady that he had been obliged to desist.

[比較] suspect, surmise, suppose, suspicion
They suspected him of cheating at cards, but there was nothing to justify an open accusation./ He suspected that there was sabotage in connection with the fire.
I surmised that you were his son from your striking resemblance to him. suspect는 surmise의 뜻을 나타낼 수도 있지만, 나쁜 뜻을 나타내려고 하지 않는 경우에는, 후자가 모호하지 않으므로 그것을 쓰는 것이 좋다.
Do you suppose that she wished to remain unmarried?/ The roads were no better than the old had supposed./ All right, suppose we do give him the money? What will happen then?
I suspicioned he wasn't a real doctor from the very beginning.

[比較] urge, exhort, press, importune
He urged them to accept the plan.
The preacher exhorted his congregation to live better lives.
Because it was so stormy, we pressed our guest to stay all night./ They pressed me for an answer.
She importuned her husband for more money.(or to give her more money.)

You'd better work out.

outwit: outsmart; to get the better of; especially: ~보다 한 수위다

get to the bottom of:
ex) Clinton may find that it is simply better to bring in an outside investigator to get to the bottom of the mess than to spend some part of every week responding to the latest revelation.

Better late than never.
ex) My late father left me a fortune.

Do you work out?
You'd better work out. 또는 You need exercise.

Get a life!
Don't you have anything better to do?
get a life도 같은 뜻인데 이 말은 경우에 따라 '웃기지 마라'
즉 Don't make me laugh!
That's life!
Such is life! That's the way the cookie crumbles란
말도 즐겨 쓰는데 That's life나 Such is life와 비슷한 뜻이다.
