→ 「A의 의견」은 what A has to say로 좋다.
→ Listen to his words
→ 「변명의 여지가 없다」 be inexcusable/ there is no excuse for~
→ 「그렇지만」 at the same time/ but/ nevertheless/ all the same
(ANS) I don't think there is any excuse for his behavior. At the same time, we should listen to what he has to say.

A, B and C are among the main factors.
→ …에 우선하다: take have (the) precedence of over~
The individualism has caused the family to disintegrate로 할 수 있고, 그밖에 Because of this individualism, the family is in the danger of disintegration.
(ANS) Man is the product of his environments, say the psychologists. Parents, neighbourhood, and school are among the main factors which have a direct impact on shaping the individual's behavior and attitude toward the world. Of all these factors the family is most important. Today the family is being challenged by individualism in which the individual has the precedence over the family; because of the individualism the family is in danger of disintegration.

[比較] bear, stand, endure, persevere, tolerate
I can't bear that dull friend of yours./ I can't stand all this noise.
The capacity to endure a more or less monotonous life is one which should be acquired in childhood.
I can't tolerate this unruly behavior.
If you persevere in your studies, you will not fail.

[比較] belly, abdomen, stomach, tummy, guts
bellyache(<속어>불평하다)/ bellylaugh/ belly dancer/ do a belly smacker(<다이빙에서>뱃장치다)
I cannot stomach his insulting behavior.(그의 무례한 거동은 참을 수 없다.)

a stern guardian/ be made of stern stuff(불굴의 의지를 가진, 확고부동한 성격을 가진)
a stern necessity

a severe critic/ His parents are severe.
또한 딱딱한, 경박한, 간소한 것을 즐기는 것을 (severe in dress: 옷차림이 검소한, She has a severe haircut like a boy's.: 그 여자의 머리 깎은 스타일은 사내 아니 처럼 수수하다), 때로는 가혹함 또는 잔인함까지도 암시하며 (a severe penalty), 확대된 용법에서 사람에게 책임이 없는 사물에 쓰이는 경우에는 고통을 주는 것, 심한 불편을 주는 것을 (a severe winter, a severe headache)암시한다.
austere는 austeros(=dry)에서 왔다.
My common conversation I do acknowledge austere, my behavior full of rigor.

Americans make no distinction between gesturings for silence to an adult or to a child.
An American will put one finger to the lips for both,
while an Ethiopian will use only one finger to a child and four fingers for an adult.
To use only one finger for an adult is disrespectful.
On the other hand, Ethiopians make no distinction in gesturing to indicate emphatic negation.
They shake their index finger from side to side to an adult as well as to a child,
while this gesture is used only for children by Americans.
Thus, if visitors are not conscious of the meaning of such behavior,
they not only will offend their hosts but they will be offended by them.

Three months ago, one of our neighbors, Bill accidentally destroyed some property
belonging to another neighbor who was out of town at the time.
Bill did not inform the neighbor of the damage, but he did tell my husband.
This did not seem fair to me.
So, several weeks after the neighbor returned home,
I knocked on their door and told them what had happened, under condition that they would not tell my name.
However, our agreement was broken and when they contacted Bill, somehow my name was in the mix.
I was very disappointed with such immature behavior.

There are many ways to communicate.
Gestures using motions are very common in communication all over the world.
Every gesture expresses different meanings and every country has its own language of gestures.
Let's look at one of the American gestures, for example.
Tapping your temple with your forefinger or making a circular motion around your ear, usually while rolling your eyes towards someone and then pointing at them, means that you disapprove of that person's behavior or opinion as being abnormal.

A few years ago a French toy company had an unusual contest ― a “biggest brat” contest.
The company had a prize for the child whose behavior was the worst in the world.
Over 2,000 parents entered their children in the contest.
“Our child is the world's biggest brat!” they wrote.
The parents made lists of all the bad things their children had done.
Judges read the lists and chose the winner.
She was a little girl from the United States.
Her name was Lizzie, and she was four years old.
Here are a few of the things Lizzie did to win the title “The World's Biggest Brat!”

In business, managers have to be leaders.
Thus, it is no wonder that researchers have been studying the nature of leadership in business.
Some researchers have found that leadership behavior among managers can be divided into two categories.
Whereas some managers are job-centered, others tend to be employee-centered.

Leaders who practice job-centered behavior closely supervise their employees in an effort to monitor and control their performance.
They are primarily concerned with getting a job done and less concerned with the feelings or attitudes of their employees.
In general, they don't encourage employees to express their opinions on how to accomplish a task best.

In contrast, leaders who practice employee-centered behavior focus on reaching goals by building a sense of team spirit.
Employee-centered leaders are concerned with job satisfaction and group unity.
They are also more willing to let employees have a voice in how they do their jobs.

When something doesn't meet our expectations, many of us operate on the assumption,
“When in doubt, it must be someone else's fault.”
You can see this assumption in action almost everywhere you look―the car isn't working properly,
so the mechanic must have repaired it incorrectly;
your expenses exceed your income, so your husband or wife must be spending too much money.
However, blaming others takes an enormous amount of mental energy.
It makes you feel powerless over your own life, because your happiness depends on the behavior of others, which you can't control.

When two people have troubles with each other, they often look to the law to decide who is right and who is wrong.
Laws exist so that there are guidelines for behavior ― what is the right thing to do and what is not right.
Unfortunately, as lawyer Peter Smith says in his book, the two sides in a court case can never really win.
The ones who “win” are the lawyers.
Even when one person is the “winner” in a court case, that person must pay his or her lawyers, must pay court costs, and suffers from bad feelings
― particularly the hostility of the other person in the case.
So Peter Smith suggests another solution that can save you from wasting time and money.

Many traditional parents measure their success in bringing up their children in terms of how well they control them.
These fathers and mothers feel that only with strong parental control is it possible to raise “good kids.”
As more and more people are coming to realize, however,
such parent-oriented child raising actually has a number of long-lasting negative effects on children.
Young people raised by controlling parents, first of all, grow up with a distorted self-image.
During childhood, emphasis has been placed on pleasing the parent,
and any negative behavior has been brought from the parent rejection not of the behavior but of the child as a person.

If they do something you think is wrong, let them know that it’s their behavior you dislike, not them.

For a long time psychoanalysis was the only psychotherapy practiced in Western society, and it is based on the theories of Sigmund Freud.
According to Freud's views, psychological disturbances are due to anxiety about hidden conflicts in the unconscious parts of one's personality.
One job of the Psychoanalysts, therefore, is to help make the patients aware of the unconscious impulses and desires that are causing the anxiety.
Psychoanalysts believe that understanding these unconscious motives is very important.
If patients can have that kind of understanding, called insight, they have taken the first step toward gaining control over their behavior and freeing themselves of their problems.

Nearly all runaways come from homes in which there are clear problems.
In any case, it is important for parents to be aware of the possibility that their child may run away,
and to be aware of the warning signs that often precede it.
One is a sudden change in behavior.
This change may be one of eating or sleeping habits.
Changes in social habits can also indicate problems, particularly when a teenager becomes withdrawn from friends and outside contacts.
If a young person begins to show sudden mood swings, going from very happy to very sad, for example,
there is a good chance that he or she is undergoing some sort of stress that is difficult to resolve.

How do other people's reactions affect you?
In almost all cases, we are affected in some way by how others respond to us.
From the workplace, to home, to school we interact with others.
We respond to them and they to us.
If a little boy likes to play dolls with his sister,
his parents' responses to his play will affect his belief about what is appropriate male behavior.
His future reactions to dolls, even perhaps to real babies, will be affected by the responses of these important others in his life.
Thus, our behavior, our ideas and our emotions are shaped through such interactions with other people.

When it comes to teaching moral behavior, it's not what you say but what you do that counts the most.
The negative side of this is illustrated by the words “The footsteps a child follows are most likely the ones his parents thought they had covered up.” Positive role-modeling, on the other hand, can bring big rewards.
Every year, Amy's parents gave holiday dinners to unfortunate families.
At age ten, Amy organized a fund-raiser for giving free meals to poor children.
In an age when so many kids are thinking only of themselves, how did Amy give a helping hand?
“I watched my parents,” she says simply.

Social sciences study the area of human behavior.
Human behavior patterns vary from place to place and group to group.
However, natural sciences are somewhat different.
When a chemist studies hydrogen, he can assume that one hydrogen atom is very much like another,
wherever it is found, and that the conditions surrounding it can be quite accurately controlled.
The same is true when a physicist measures a metal bar;
he can be quite sure that it will not stretch or shrink in length as long as natural conditions are the same.
Because of the predictable nature of their subject matter, natural sciences are often called “easy sciences.”
그것은 물리학자가 금속막대기를 측정하는 경우에도 마찬가지이다;

A group of researchers observed kindergarteners playing with crayons.
The kids seemed to enjoy it with great concentration and apparent pleasure for internal reasons.
Next, the researchers promised some of the children “Good Player Awards” for their drawing efforts with the crayons.
For one week, these children knew they would get a “prize” at the end of the week for their drawing behavior.
For the remaining children, no such promises were made.
There was a significant change in the crayon use among the kids promised external rewards.
Surprisingly, they spent much less time playing with crayons than before.
By contrast, the other children maintained their normal frequency and duration of use.

Fashions are the currently accepted styles of appearance and behavior.
The fact that some style is called a "fashion" implies a social recognition that it is temporary and will eventually be replaced by a new style.
In small-scale, traditional communities, fashions are virtually unknown.
In these communities everyone of similar age and sex wears much the same clothing and behaves in much the same way, and there is little change in styles from year to year or even from generation to generation.
In modern societies, however, fashions may change very rapidly indeed: automobile bodies assume new contours every year, and women's hemlines rise and fall with the passage of the seasons.

In most societies there are particular ways of behaving and speaking which are considered to be polite, but these are not the same in all societies.

Why are men so violent? Uncivilized behavior is easy to explain, but it's difficult to change.
It has more to do with how people react to fear and feelings of inadequacy than gender.
Violent behavior is a result of feeling powerless and impotent.
This applies to men and women of all ethnic groups, races and nations.

Clearly, if we get the message out that violence reveals to the world that the individual feels powerless or impotent, no one would regard violent behavior as admirable.

If we behave in a way that lets others know we are sure of ourselves and that we have a strong sense of personal worth, violence will disappear, except as a last resort to protect ourselves from those who have not yet gotten the message.
Unfortunately, explanations do not change behavior.
We can, however, change ourselves, and this will change the way people think about us.

Last night there was a long and detailed personal message on my machine from a teacher explaining why "David" had been transferred to her class.
There were some comments about his unacceptable behavior and a request that I call the school to discuss the problem.
The caller did not mention the name of the school and there was no number, so I was unable to let her know that she had reached the wrong person.

A parent decreed one Christmas that she was no longer going to remind her children of their thank-you-note duties.
As a result, their grandmother never received acknowledgments of the generous checks she had given.
The next year things were different, however.
"The children came over in person to thank me," the grandparent told a friend triumphantly.
"How wonderful!" the friend exclaimed.
"What do you think caused the change in behavior?"
"Oh, that's easy," the grandmother replied.
"This year I didn't sign the checks."

How much living space does a person need? What happens when these space
requirements are not adequately met? Sociologists and psychologists are
conducting experiments on rats to try to determine the effects of
overcrowding on humans.
Recent studies have shown that the behavior of rats is greatly affected
by space. If rats have adequate living space, they eat well, sleep well,
and reproduce well. But if their living conditions become too crowded,
their behavior patterns and even their health change perceptibly. They
cannot sleep and eat well and signs of fear and tension become obvious.
The more crowded they are, the more they tend to bite each other and
even kill each other. Thus, for rats, population and violence are
directly related. Is this a natural law for human society as well?

dislike changing. Yet it needs to be remembered that efforts to change

The Ashanti people in Africa name their children according to the day of
the week on which they are born. They believe that Monday boys are quiet
and well-behaved. But Wednesday boys are said to easily get angry and
upset. A recent report on the behavior of Ashanti children shows that it
true. Monday boys are less frequently fighting than chance would have it,
while Wednesday boy are more likely to quarrel. This finding suggests
that names can have a powerful effect upon personal behavior.

To keep a pleasant environment, employers cannot allow certain kinds of
behaviors such as arriving late or bothering others. These behaviors may
weaken the group work environment and decrease productivity. So employers
always consider teamwork when they judge a worker's performance. They
look for employees who support each other, take pride in their work, and
encourage a pleasant working environment. Respect, good manners, and
thoughtful behaviors are keys to successful teamwork. In fact, working
well with others is one of the most important job skills.

In an experiment on their behavior, baby monkeys were separated from
their mothers at birth and provided with artificial mothers. Some of
their artificial mothers were made of cold, hard wire while the others
were made of warm, soft towel cloth. When given a choice between the two
types of mothers, the monkeys repeatedly chose to spend their time with
the towel cloth mothers. This experiment suggests that the baby monkeys
looked for the comfort supplied by their contact with their towel cloth
mothers.

I work in an office with several other secretaries. Most of us are
efficient and hard-working, and are relaxed with each other. One among
us, however, is almost always late to work, and when she does arrive, she
reads the newspaper and makes several personal phone calls. Some of us
are bothered by this woman's bad behavior. But nobody wants to say
anything to the boss because we don't want to hurt our working
relationship. We would appreciate some guidance, since things will soon
become too difficult to stand.

This letter is to confirm that you will be dismissed form the company
effective October 14. 1992. This action follows our letters of warning

Play is what people do when they create culture.
It is letting free of the human imagination to create shared meanings.
Play is fundamental category of human behavior without which civilization could not exist.

"Crime is rational behavior -a choice that is made by a person or persons in deciding how best to spend their time.
In making the choice, individuals consider what they stand to gain and what they stand to lose; that is, they consider the benefits and costs of using their time in different ways- working legally, working illegally, or not working at all.
One implication of this approach is that individuals have some knowledge, not necessarily perfect, of the benefits and costs associated with different actions."

This “cyber terrorism” is not only designed to slander and defame opponents, but also attacks their characters and threatens their properties and even family members.
Needless to say, such brutal and irresponsible behavior gravely endangers the democratic process of the nation and the culture of open discussion, even leading to the coining of a new phrase, “Internet power.”

Doing what's right is an easy and ordinary thing.
It is not as difficult as figuring out a mathematical equation, nor as trying as climbing Mount Everest, because it's all about doing the bare minimum.
When this simple and ordinary right way of doing things does not happen, however, everything falls apart, since all of the world's relationships are built on correct behavior.
This is why that which is "right as a person," "right as a teacher," "right as a student," "right as a parent," and "right as a child" are important.
There are certain things that are becoming and right of everyone.

Indeed, a lot of what researchers have learned about the biology of anxiety comes from scaring rats and then cutting them open.
Just as the Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov showed 100 years ago that you could condition a dog to salivate at the sound of a bell,
scientists today have taught rats to fear all kinds of things - from buzzers to lights - by giving them electrical shocks when they hear the buzzer or see the light.
The animals quickly learn to fear the stimulus even in the absence of a shock.
Then researchers destroy small portions of the rats' brains to see what effect that has on their reactions (an experiment that would be impossible to conduct in humans).
By painstakingly matching the damaged areas with changes in behavior, scientists have, bit by bit, created a road map of fear as it travels through the rat's brain.

The behavior of common and lesser kestrels may illustrate different
feeding behaviors of similar birds with different roosting habits. The
common kestrel hunts vertebrate animals in a small, familiar hunting
ground, whereas the very similar lesser kestrel feeds on insects over a
large area. The common kestrel roosts and hunts alone, but the lesser
kestrel roosts and hunts in flocks, possibly so one bird can learn from
others where to find insect swarms.

The dulotic species of ants, however, are the supreme social parasites.
Consider, for example, the unusual behavior of ants belonging to the
genus Polyergus. All species of this ant have lost the ability to care
for themselves. The workers do not forage for food, feed their brood or
queen, or even clean their own nest. To compensate for these deficits,
Polyergus has become specialized at obtaining workers from the related
genus Formica to do these chores.

The behavior of gases is explained by what scientists call the kinetic theory.

Allelomimetric behavior may be defined as behavior in which two or more
individual animals do the same thing, with some degree of mutual stimulation and
coordination.
It can only evolve in species with sense organs that are well enough developed
so that continuous sensory contact can be maintained.
It is found primarily in vertebrates, in those species that are diurnal, and
usually in those that spend much of their lives in the air, in open water, or
on open plains.

In birds, allelomimetic behavior is the rule rather than the exception, though
it may occasionally bee limited to particular seasons of the year as it is in
the redwing blackbird.

Among mammals, allelomimetic behavior is very rare in rodents, which almost
never move in flocks or herds.
Even when they are artificially crowded together, they do not conform in their
movements.

In the pack-hunting carnivores, allelomimetic behavior has another function,
that of cooperative hunting for large prey animals such as moose.

Finally, allelomimetic behavior is highly developed among most primate groups,
where it has the principal function of providing warning against predators,
though combined defensive behavior is also seen in troops of baboons.

to control the temperature.
