English literature of Korea must be regarded as of Korean Sciences because it has been taught to Korean Language at least for forty years. As it is a completely koreanized science like electro engineering politics and library science, I believe it is quite natural for korean scholars to write about it in korean language for the easy understanding of Korean people. Translation without interpretation of footnotes on it is likely to be hard to understand. So it is sometimes rather convenient to read the source language text in itself. As a result translation seems less useful. We cannot make the foreign words ours just by changing them into Korean.

Fall is rather short, about two months from the middle of September to November. It is the most pleasant season of the year, because the days are clear and sunny. Winter in Korea can be characterized as cold and dry, though it snows frequently in most parts of the country.

Kobukson was so called because
→ 거북의 외각처럼 두꺼운 철판: thick iron plate like a turtle shell
→ 「 그 위에는 날카로운 쇠꼬챙이들이 박혀있었다」는 with sharp spikes on it
(ANS) Kobukson was so called because it looked like a giant turtle. It had a dragon head, and was covered with thick iron plates like a turtle shell with sharp spikes on it. Below the dragon head was a large opening. A cannon was fired from it while smoke poured out of the dragon's mouth.

실현되지 못하고 만 '소망'이나 '의도'는 hoped(intended, wanted)+to have+p.p로도 나타낸다. ex) 그는 당신을 만나기를 바랬었어요(끝내 만나지 못했다는 뜻으로): He had hoped to see you.=He hoped to have seen you.
I had given weekly lectures.
I had my own personal reason.
(ANS) Last April I intended to go to Chunchon, but the trip did not materialize after all. I had wanted to visit the Sacred Heart Women's College in that city, where I had given weekly lectures one fall semester. The weekly trip to Chunchon was tiring, but I had taken the job out of courtesy, because I could not decline the honor when Sisters Choo and Kim had taken the trouble to come to see me. Besides I had my own personal reason.

→ 어떻게 부르면 좋을지 망설이다: have a hard time deciding what to call the occasion
→ …라고 부르는 것도 알맞지 않다: nor is it properly called~
Chusok deeply rooted in the culture of Korea; Chusok with a special importance; have a remarkable significance
(ANS) Because there are so many levels of meaning to Chusok, foreigners often have a hard time deciding what to call the occasion. It is not the same as Thanksgiving celebrations, though it includes the thanks for the harvest and the family gathering and eating. Nor is Chusok properly called an autumn moon festival, for the more important meaning to Koreans is to be found in the veneration of the family ancestors. Probably the most important thing about Chusok today is its very Koreanness. At a time when the people of this country are deeply concerned to discover and affirm their true national identity, events with a long history in the culture of Korea a special importance.

While world population growth has, in general, slowed down…
→ 년간 1.9%의 성장을 이룩하다: grow at 1.9 percent a year
으로: largely because of
→ 국제원조의 삭감: the cutback in international aid
→ 「인구증가율은 2.02% 였다」: The population grew at…
→ 1% 상승한 데 불과하다: rose by only one percent a year
(ANS) Despite an overall slowdown in world population growth, the populations of many developing countries are continuing to grow at high rate. Between 1980 and 1982 the economies of the developing countries grew at only 1.9 percent a year, largely because of the economic recession and the cutback in international aid. At the same time their populations grew at 2.02 percent. But per capita income in the poorest nations rose by only about one percent a year between 1960 and 1981. At present per capita income of the richest country is 220 times the per capita income of the poorest country. The gap between the developing and developed countries will widen still further.

A, B and C are among the main factors.
→ …에 우선하다: take have (the) precedence of over~
The individualism has caused the family to disintegrate로 할 수 있고, 그밖에 Because of this individualism, the family is in the danger of disintegration.
(ANS) Man is the product of his environments, say the psychologists. Parents, neighbourhood, and school are among the main factors which have a direct impact on shaping the individual's behavior and attitude toward the world. Of all these factors the family is most important. Today the family is being challenged by individualism in which the individual has the precedence over the family; because of the individualism the family is in danger of disintegration.

(ANS) When I lived in the suburbs of Anyang City, I needed no alarm clock in the summer as(or because; since) the songs of the cuckoos woke me up every morning.

→ 오늘의 지도자: a leader (of) today; a boss of (in) modern times
→ 속속들이 알다; 철저히 알다: have a thorough knowledge; know thoroughly
→ 빈틈없이 감독하다: have vigilant supervisory power; exercise strict supervision
→ 판단하다: make decisions
→ 개입하다: get involved
→ 전체를 지휘하다: direct the work as a whole; command the whole work
(ANS) A leader today must have a thorough knowledge of his own job in every possible field and have vigilant supervisory power. His job is to make decisions and have others fulfill them, not to execute them himself. This is because he may probably become unable to command the whole work if he gets personally involved in any specific aspect of it.

→ 투자량: investment; the amount of investment
→ 사회적 부: social wealth
The rich grow richer and the poor grow poorer
→ 현상: phenomenon (복수=phenomena)
→ 바꾸어 말하면: in other words
→ 소득 수준: income level
→ 평균: the average
(ANS) However, even when investment expands and social wealth grow, the rich can grow richer and the poor can grow poorer. In other words, when the phenomenon, the rich growing richer and the poor growing poorer, becomes acute, the average income level can rise. Because it is the average.

→ 「열차가 떠나기까지→ 열차의 출발점에」로 before the departure of the train; before the train started (또는 departed)
→ 「시간이 많이 있었다」 there was a lot of time, 「역 안의 커피숍」 the coffee shop in the station, 「시간을 보내다」 kill time, 「~하기로 했다」 decided to~;made up one's mind to~.
(ANS) I decided to kill time in a coffee shop in the station because there was a lot of time before the departure of the train.

→ 「한국인」은 여기서는 국민 전체를 말하므로 The Koreans 또는The Korean people이라고 한다. 「지금까지 걸어온 역사적 과정」은 관계대명사를 이용하여 the historical process which ~ have gone through라고 한다.
Perhaps because of (or owing to) ~로 한다. It is perhaps because of ~ that…
「중요시하지 않다」는 「~의 중요성을 경시한다」즉 neglect(또는 be negligent of ~) the importance; underestimate the significance로 표현한다.
(ANS 1) Perhaps because of the historical course (which) the Korean people have gone through, they seem to have so far been rather negligent of the significance of taking good care of their health.
(ANS 2) It seems that the Koreans have so far rather underestimated the importance of taking good care of their health. This is perhaps due to the course of history they have passed through. ~31

→ 그 이상으로: what is more; much more than that
→ 성숙한: mature; fully developed; grown-up
(ANS 1) Of course that is partly because we are physically grown up, but perhaps another bigger reason is that we now have a mature eye of adults.
(ANS 2) We can attribute these experiences to the fact that we are grown up in body and more specifically, that we've come to have mature inner eyes.

→ 다년간의 노력: many years' efforts [or hard work]
→ 지식 기능: knowledge and skills
→ 일순간에: instantly; at once
→ …는 ~하므로 무섭다: …is dreadful because ~
(ANS 1) A traffic accident is dreadful indeed because it often instantly deprives people of their lives and all the knowledge and skills acquired by them through many years' hard work.
(ANS 2) Dreadful indeed is traffic accident, which often deprives its victims of th ir lives, and instantly extinguishes the knowledge and skills which they have acquired by many years' efforts.

→ 눈이 어둠에 익숙해진 탓일까: since my eyes seemed to have grown accustomed to the darkness → 별빛 아래로: in the starlight
→ 희미하게 보였다: was faintly discerned; was dimly recognized
(ANS 1) But while I was looking toward the sea, my eyes seemed to have become accustomed to the darkness, and I dimly discerned the dumpy figure of the island in the faint starlight.
(ANS 2) But it was partly because my eyes had grown accustomed to the darkness after looking toward the sea that the stumpy figure of the island was faintly recognized in the dim glow of the stars.

ex) Such synopses have little value for the student, because the mere events of the action are not the most important part of the plays.

[比較] sullen, glum, morose, surly, sulky
The sullen prisoners marched along./ In a morning, I am always sullen./ Sullenness doesn't imply silence, but an ill-natured silence.
He is glum about world affairs./ He listened with a glum expression.

[比較] therefore, hence, consequently, then, accordingly, so
All men are rational beings, Socrates is a man; therefore Socrates is a rational being./ He was the only candidate; therefore, he was elected.
consequently는 as a result, or sequence, or effect of the preceding(앞선 것의 결과로서)의 뜻이며, 흔히 추론을 도입하는 데에 쓰이기는 해도, 반드시 결론의 필연성을 의미하지는 않고, 오히려 결론에 대한 충분한 근거를 암시한다.
He said he would come; consequently I expect him.
He said he would come; consequently I am waiting for him./ He is the popular candidate; consequently he will be elected.
If A is true, then B is false.
He said he was hungry; accordingly they shared their meager lunch with him.
so는 because the preceding is true(앞선 것이 사실이기 때문에), this being the case(경우가 이러하므로)의 뜻이며 구어적인 말이다.

The Army is called on to exert more efforts to promote discipline
among all ranks in order to prevent various safety mishaps that
seriously damage the armed forces' defense capabilities. A recent
government report showed that an average of 700 soldiers are killed each
year in accidents. Besides, a growing number of soldiers commit suicide
because of the still prevalent violence within the ranks.

Frankly, Korean colleges and universities have been not very interested
in upgrading their educational standards. Their focus has been placed on
recruiting as many students as they can, rather than in improving the
conditions of education they provide for the students they have. In a
sense, this has been possible because of the vast demand for tertiary
education under Korea's peculiar social convention.

Arguments in this trial boil down to whether Chun Doo-hwan and
his collaborators took an extraordinary military action because it was
necessary to probe the assassination of president Park Chung-hee as
the defense claimed, or they engineered the ``coup-like incident'' in
order to gain political power in denial of the constitutional order and in
defiance of the military chain of command. The justifiability of the
suppression of the Kwangju uprising in 1980 depends largely on the
judgment of the Dec. 12, 1979 mutiny.

The President had initially said he would leave them to the ``judgment

South Korea's exercise of jurisdiction over the case could involve
some complicated legal problems as the ship, Pesca Mar No. 15, is
registered in Honduras even though it is actually owned by a
Seoul-based firm, Daehyun Fisheries Co. However, the case should be
handled by the Korean authorities because the ship's real owners are
Korean and the victims of the revolt were mostly Korean.
