[比較] bear, stand, endure, persevere, tolerate
I can't bear that dull friend of yours./ I can't stand all this noise.
The capacity to endure a more or less monotonous life is one which should be acquired in childhood.

[比較] number, numeral, figure, digit
ex) the number forty-five/ The number of books was 1200.
number에는 cardinal number(기수)와 ordinal number(서수)의 구별이 있다. ten 또는 10, thirty-three 또는 33은 전자이며, first 또는 1st는 후자이다.
ex) Roman numerals/ Arabic numerals/ a license plate bearing both letters and numerals
ex) Write all your numbers in figures/ The cost went into four figures.(비용은 네 자리 숫자에 달했다.)
ex) The numbers in arithmetic are expressed by the ten digits.

[比較] wedding, marriage, nuptials, matrimony, wedlock
Will you dance at my wedding?/ A thousand invitations to the wedding were sent out?
They announced the marriage of their daughter./ Marriage is a basic social institution.
Theirs was a long and happy marriage.
Millions of Britons bought newspapers to read of the royal nuptials.
be joined in bonds of holy matrimony
Children born out of wedlock are children of parents who are not legally married.

뜻이다. know the time of day란 말도 있는데 '하루의 시간을
Do you think I don't even know the
time of day?
Do you think I was
born yesterday?

Bear with me, please
* 미국인들은 bear with me, please란 말을 잘 쓰는데 불편하거나
이 때 A가
B에게 Bear with me please while I talk to my secretary
그리고 grin and bear it이란 말도 잘 쓰는데 글자 그대로

We live from hand to mouth
또는 born with a silver spoon in one's mouth 즉 '은숟가락을
일해서 자수성가하는 것은 make it on one's own이라 한다.
make it은 '성공(출세)한다'는 말이고, on one's own은 '혼자의
처음엔 live from hand to mouth 즉 '그날 벌어 그 날 쓰기
live from paycheck to paycheck

Born in a barn.

In many countries, military servicemen bear the primary responsibility

What a bore to hear the same silly advertising slogans reiterated endlessly on TV programs!

When his first child was born, the king granted amnesty to all in prison.

check was once returned to a millionaire from a bank.
It bore a stamped imprint:“Insufficient Funds.”
Beneath the stamped imprint was a notation from the bank in ink.
It appeared to read, “Not you - us!”

In the fields black slaves picked cotton.
And as they worked, they sang of their misery, sang of hope, and sang to keep themselves working.
But soon the songs changed, and they were not sung just in the fields.
Their strong rhythms were established through hand clapping, and in the language of the slaves, jazz was born.
Jazz originally meant 'speed' or 'excitement.' but it soon became used to describe a special kind of music.

Every bird is covered with feathers.
Feathers help the birds fly and help them hide from their enemies.
they also keep the birds warm when they swim or when it rains.
These feathers are called down and are found underneath other feathers.
Some baby birds are covered with down when they are born.
Other feathers are like those on sparrows.
They help sparrows hide in trees, bushes, and grass.

On the average, babies born in the spring are taller and heavier than those born at other times of the year.
In spring, growing children gain most rapidly in height.
The increase is almost twice that of a similar period in fall.
The very chemical composition of our blood changes slightly in the spring;
we sense the coming of the season in our life stream.

Men who drink a lot of alcohol may have a higher chance of having children with physical or mental problems.
Doctors have long been aware that women alcoholics may give birth to defective babies.
However, scientists have recently discovered that alcoholism in men may be responsible for birth defects too.
Large quantities of alcohol may affect the quality of the father's genes.
This genetic change may cause a child to be born defective in some way.
Scientists are not sure how this happens.
But the statistics of the study seem to leave little doubt that it can happen.

The giant panda bear is a favorite of children and animal lovers throughout the world.
Though so well known and loved, the panda is slowly dying out.
At present, there are only about 1,230 wild pandas left in the world.
They all live in China.
Pandas used to be common in other areas.
However, as the human population increased and the forests shrank, panda territory gradually disappeared.
And so did tile panda.
Now the Chinese government has created a number of “panda reserves” to protect pandas.
Within these reserves, human settlement and tree cutting will be limited.

With Europeans having fewer babies and generally living longer, the population is getting older.
Infants born today will live eight years longer on average than those born in 1950.
An aging society means fewer workers will support more retirees, with pensions and healthcare costs rising high.
This development will affect almost every aspect of their lives.

All of the wild Giant Pandas in the world live in western China.
They are found in dense bamboo forests high up in the mountains.
The forests are so dense that it has always been hard for people to find out much about wild pandas.
The pandas stay hidden in the forest most of the time, where people can't even see them.
In many ways, the Giant Panda is still a mysterious animal.
Nobody is really sure what kind of animal they are.
Some scientists say that the Giant Panda is a member of the raccoon family.
But others claim that it belongs to the bear family.
And a third group is sure that it doesn't belong to either family.

Ecopsychology is a new area of psychology.
Ecopsychologists study humans and their relationships to the environment.
They feel that the environment is very important to our sense of well-being.
In fact, they believe it is central to our happiness.
If we are going to be happy, we need to connect more with nature.
Children are born with this feeling of connection to nature.
They often spend long periods of time with plants, trees, and insects.

As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Chicago morning
A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto
And his mama cries
Because if there's one thing that she doesn't need
it's another hungry mouth to feed
In the ghetto
People, don't you understand
the child needs a helping hand
or he'll grow to be an angry young man some day
Take a look at you and me,
are we too blind to see,
do we simply turn our heads
and look the other way
Ghetto
Ghetto

If necessity is the mother of invention, error is the father.
Thousands of foods we eat, products we purchase, and machines we operate came from lab mistakes and lucky accidents.
