* 미국인들은 bear with me, please란 말을 잘 쓰는데 불편하거나

The giant panda bear is a favorite of children and animal lovers throughout the world.
Though so well known and loved, the panda is slowly dying out.
At present, there are only about 1,230 wild pandas left in the world.
They all live in China.
Pandas used to be common in other areas.
However, as the human population increased and the forests shrank, panda territory gradually disappeared.
And so did tile panda.
Now the Chinese government has created a number of “panda reserves” to protect pandas.
Within these reserves, human settlement and tree cutting will be limited.

All of the wild Giant Pandas in the world live in western China.
They are found in dense bamboo forests high up in the mountains.
The forests are so dense that it has always been hard for people to find out much about wild pandas.
The pandas stay hidden in the forest most of the time, where people can't even see them.
In many ways, the Giant Panda is still a mysterious animal.
Nobody is really sure what kind of animal they are.
Some scientists say that the Giant Panda is a member of the raccoon family.
But others claim that it belongs to the bear family.
And a third group is sure that it doesn't belong to either family.

One day, Marsha went into the forest to pick some berries because she wanted to make a pie for her grandparents.
She soon got lost, so she stopped at a house to ask for help.
Unfortunately, a bear lived there.
He made Marsha stay to clean and cook.
Marsha wondered how she could escape.

She had an idea.
She made some pies and asked the bear to take them to her grandparents' house.
“Don't look in the basket,” she said.
“Don't eat the pies on the way.
I will climb the highest tree in the forest to make sure you don't eat them.”
Marsha

The bear hesitated but eventually agreed, thinking he would secretly eat the pies when he went into the forest.
When the bear wasn't looking, Marsha hid in the basket.
Then the bear picked up the basket and set off.
On the way, he decided to rest and eat a pie, but Marsha cried out, “I can see you! I can see you!”

Life is unfair. Yet life is good.
Our ability to thoughtfully deal with the unfairness and build on the good can make the difference between a happy and unhappy life.
One reason so many of us cannot get out of pain easily is our tendency to think,
“That shouldn't have happened to me. That was unfair.”
When we allow such thinking to dominate our thoughts, we begin to bear resentments.

It is clear, therefore, that the destruction of the Amazon rain forest must stop.
The harm that this destruction is causing is far greater than any benefits it might bring.
All the nations of the world must become involved in this problem, for the entire planet depends on the Amazon forest to a great extent.
This involvement must not be one-sided.

All rulership has its original and its most legitimate source in man's wish to free himself from life's necessity, and men achieved such liberation by means of violence, by forcing others to bear the burden of life for them.
This was the core of slavery, and it is only the rise of technology, and not the rise of modern political ideas, which has refuted the old and terrible truth that only violence and rule over others could make some men free.

A bear approached a hunter in the forest and asked him what he was after.
"I'm after a fur coat for myself," said the hunter.

"Why not step into my cave and we'll talk this thing over?"
The hunter agreed to this and they retired to the cave and sat down to work out a compromise.
The bear got his breakfast and the hunter was in a fur coat.

The problem is to learn to read these scientific records accurately. There are
pitfalls in any such endeavor. The more independent approaches that can be brought
to bear on a given problem, the greater are the chances that the pitfalls will be
overcome and a meaningful solution achieved.

Human folly, alas, will continue to devastate the nations with war. Men
will continue to be born who are not fitted for life, and life will be
a burden to them.
So long as some are strong and some are weak, the weak will be driven to
the wall. So long as men are cursed with the sense of possession, and
that I presume is as long as they exist, they will wrest what they can
from those who are powerless to hold it. So long as they have the
instinct of self-assertion they will exercise it at the expense of
others' happiness. In short, so long as man is man he must be prepared
to face all the woes that he can bear.

We cannot train ourselves to bear disaster by thinking of all the
particular disasters that might happen to us.
To do that produces a habit of panic, not of preparation; and we
can never prepare in detail for every disaster that may come.
Nor can we steel ourselves against a possible sorrow by refusing
to enjoy any actual joy.
For joy increases the health of the mind, and so strengthens it
against the attacks of sorrow.
In joy we forget ourselves; and self-forgetfulness is the best
possible habit for the mind to acquire.
Indeed, if we can acquire it and maintain it through all changes
of circumstance, we have learnt complete adaptability and the
secret of life.

A young lady dismissed the young man to whom she was engaged because he drank.
A few days after she had told him she would never speak to him again, a little
boy brought a note from the wretched young man.
The note read this: "Faithless, yet still beloved Fanny! My sufferings are
more than I can bear. I cannot live without your love. I have therefore just
taken poison, the effect of which I am now beginning to feel. When you read
these lines, I shall have joined the great majority. See that I am decently
buried, and shed a silent tear over my tomb in remembrance of the days gone

When the young lady had finished reading the note, she asked the boy who had
brought it what he was waiting for.
"The gentleman who sent it told me to wait for an answer," was the reply.

>>> Will You Be There <<< Sung by Michael Jackson
Hold me like the River Jordan
And I will then say to thee you are my friend
Carry me like you are my brother
Love me like a mother
Will you be there?
When weary tell me will you hold me
When wrong will you scold me
When lost will you find me
But they told me a man should be faithful
And walk when not able and fight till the end
But I'm only human
Everyone's taking control of me
Seems that the world's got a role for me
I'm so confused
Will you show to me you'll be there for me and care enough to
bear me
Hold me
Lay your head lowly
Softly then boldly carry me there

Man's youth is a wonderful thing:
it is so full of anguish and of magic and he never comes to know it as it is, until it has gone form him forever.
It is the thing he cannot bear to lose;
it is the thing whose passing he watches with infinite sorrow and regret;
it is the thing whose loss he must lament forever;
it is the thing whose loss he really welcomes with a sad and secret joy,
the thing he would never willingly re-live again,
could it be restored to him by any magic.
Why is this?
The reason is that the strange and bitter miracle of life is nowhere else so evident as in our youth.

From this viewing standpoint, an alternative reading of a film can occur.
This reading comes from something in the film that appears "amiss."
When things appear strange to the viewer, she/he may then bring other viewpoints to bear on the watching of the film and may see things other than what the film-makers intended.
The viewer, that is, will read against the grain of the film.

Once my mother and grandmother, horrified by a particularly sensational picture on the cover of one of my books, told me to tear it up.
I could not bear to do this, so I hid it under a loose board in my grandmother's summer-house, where it stayed for two or three years, and received many secret and guilty readings it would never have had otherwise: for my father was right on the other point too.
I had grown out of my taste for highwayman, and gone on the other books.
But the forbidden book lasted longer than all the rest, because it was forbidden.

God makes all things good; man meddles with them and they become evil.
He forces one soil to yield the products of another, one tree to bear another's fruit.
He confuses and confounds time, place, and natural conditions.
He mutilates his dog, his horse, and his slave.
He destroys and defaces all things; he loves all that is deformed and monstrous;
he will have nothing as nature made it, not even man himself,
who must learn his paces like a saddle horse, and be shaped to his master's taste like the trees in his garden.

The largest hibernators are the bears.
Although a grizzly or black bear's heart rate may drop from a normal of 40-50 beats per minute down to 8-12, its temperature drops only slightly, allowing it to wake up quickly.
These bears are also unique because, unlike other hibernators, they do not eat, drink, or excrete at all while hibernating, which can be as long as six months.

A polar bear stirs.
She has been in her den the whole winter.
Her emergence marks the beginning of spring.
After months of confinement underground she toboggans down the slope.
Perhaps to clean her fur, perhaps for sheer joy.

Her two cubs follow her and take their first steps in the outside world.
These steep slopes provide a sanctuary for the cubs.
A male bear would kill and eat them given the chance.
But big animals find it difficult to get about here.
Males may be twice the size of a female and even she can have problems.
Her cubs, however, make light of the snow
and of life in general.
But the mother faces a dilemma:
it's six months since she last fed and her milk is starting to run dry.

At this time of the year bears should be fattening up for the winter.
Yet they gather in some numbers on these apparently barren slopes.
They're searching for a rather unusual food -
moths.
Millions have flown up here to escape the heat of the lowlands
and they're now roosting among the rocks.
Moths may seem a meager meal for a bear,
but their bodies are rich in fat
and can make all the difference in a bear's annual struggle for survival.

The red panda, rarely glimpsed in the wild.
It was once considered a kind of raccoon,

A grizzly bear.
From famine to feast - he's spoilt for choice.
This Canadian bear is very special - he's learnt to dive for his dinner.
But catching salmon in deep water is not that easy
and the cubs have lots to learn.

Crammed into this scrum, the birds are remarkably good natured, but they have to be.
If the huddle breaks even for a moment, precious heat escapes.
It's imperative they reform as quickly as possible
for only by as acting as one can the males withstand the elements, and protect their eggs.
But their greatest test lies ahead.
As winter advances, frequent blizzards drive the temperature down.

The annual melt has begun.
This is a challenging time for the bear family.
One out of every two cubs do not survive their first year out on the ice.
As the sun's influence increases, the sea ice seems to take on a life of it's own.
Glacial melt waters pour from the land
mingling with the sea and speeding up the thaw.
The seascape is in constant flux, as broken ice is moved on by winds and currents.

The ice is becoming too weak to support a male polar bear.
He attempts to spread his weight
but the ice that has supported him all winter is rapidly disintegrating.
Each year as the climate warms the Arctic holds less ice.
This is a disaster for polar bears.
Without it's solid platform, they can't hunt the seals they need in order to survive.

Ducking and diving, he hopes to ambush seals resting on the remaining fragments of ice.
In these new surroundings he is a surprisingly adept swimmer.
Once an extremely rare sight
polar bears have recently been seen over sixty miles from the shore.
There is now no turning back for this bear.
He's forced to head out into deeper water.
His giant front paws help him to fight the ocean currents.
He seems at home in the sea but he cannot swim indefinitely.
He will drown if he doesn't find land somewhere in this vast ocean.

Walruses are now gathering on low lying islands.
They gave birth on sea ice
but with this platform now gone, they need a new place to haul out and nurse their young.
After several days at sea the male bear finally makes landfall
drawn by pungent smells emanating from the island.
By the end of summer the bear has lost half his weight.
With the ice long gone he is forced onto land in search of food.
There will be no easy meals on this island.

The bears claws and teeth can't penetrate her thick hide.
With the herd retreating to water the bear must move quickly.
Having failed with one he heads straight for another.

The chance of his first meal in months is slipping away.
He seems increasingly desperate.
It's now or never.
He must avoid the stabbing tusks if he's to win.
The flailing walrus is immensely powerful and drags the bear away from the shallows
towards the safety of the herd.
It slips from his grasp.
Only at the height of summer when bears are on the verge of starvation
will they risk attacking such dangerous prey.
It was a gamble that this bear took, and lost.
The stab wounds he received from the walrus are so severe that he can barely walk.

reat to them or their young.
Unable to feed this bear will not survive.
If the global climate continues to warm
and the Arctic ice melts sooner each year
