1) ~와 거리가 멀다: know nothing about ~; be a complete stranger
It may [or can] safely be said that ~ ; We can safely say that ~
3) 그저 시간 죽이기: a mere means of killing time; only for an idle hour
They took it for granted that I would attend the reception.
He always assumes that his friends are interested in what he is doing.
There is a man who always thinks that money is to be borrowed (from others).
ANS 1) It may safely be said that those who assume that books are to be read by borrowing know nothing about the true joy of reading. These people think of reading as a mere means of killing time.
ANS 2) It is not too much to say that a man who takes it for granted that reading books is borrowing them of others does not know anything about the true joy from reading. Such a man thinks reading is nothing but a mere means of killing time.

→ 여행만큼 즐거운 것은 없다: ① Nothing is more pleasant than traveling; ② Nothing gives us more pleasure than traveling.
→ 옛날부터 일러 왔다: goes an old saying that; as an old saying goes~
Few people are against it.
→ 미지의 곳을 방문하다: travel to strange places
→ 그곳 사람들의 인정이나 풍습에 젖어 보다: get friendly with the people there and get friendly with their was of life; get friendly and familiar with the people there and their customs and manners.
(ANS 1) "Nothing is more pleasant than traveling." goes an old saying, and even today a great number of people still believe it to be true. To take a journey to strange places and become friendly with the people and familiar with their way of life may well bring us one of the greatest pleasures we can ever experience in our lives.
(ANS 2) "Nothing gives us more pleasure than traveling." as an old saying goes. Even these days few people are against it. Indeed, it is one of the highest joys we can get out of life to travel to strange places and get friendly and familiar with the people there and their customs and manners.

``The statement contains nothing new, falling far short of our
expectations,'' said Kim Hyo-jin, who heads the coalition of
Oriental medicine students. ``It sidelined our demands that the
state-run license test in May, which allows some 20,000
pharmacists to practice Oriental herbal medicine, be revoked as
well as that the government come up with a substantial package in
favor of the Oriental medicine community to fend off a recurrence
of student protests.''

영화 Back to the Future에서 주인공(Michael J. Fox)이 자주 들었던 욕입니다.
You chicken! Come back here.
He chickened out as soon as he saw me.
Don't be chicken-hearted when you have to fight against enemy.
I cannot live with this chicken feed.
Hey, stop it. I don't want to fight over chicken-and-egg problem.
I may be a spring chicken, but I am doing my best.
Look at that chick. She is a knock-out.

One of two things will happen:

2.They will think you're quite strange and decide not to come at all.
Of course, the seconds are too short to worry about, so leave them out.
A few minutes don't matter so much, so just say "half past six" or "6:30".
On the other hand, a year is so long that everyone knows what year you are talking about.
So you don't really need to put the year in, either.
When you leave these extra details out, it gives you room on your invitation to put much more important things:

There are some events whose exact time is usually given in more detail than others.
Astronomers are probably silliest about this.
They sit at their telescopes for days and then proudly tell us that there will be a complete eclipse of the sun at 8 minutes and 19 seconds past 4 o'clock on the morning of January 5, 2167.
It's funny that these same people can also be very uncertain about other times, such as:
When did you buy that shirt you're wearing?
It was back in nineteen eighty something.... I think.

Be that as it may, that's just how we want it.

Is it irreverent of me to suggest that the "great man" may not be as great as he thinks he is?

Possibly the most effective way to focus on your goals is to write them down.
Although this may sound like an obvious first step, it is a step that many people ignore.
As a result, their goals often remain unfocused, and therefore unrealized.
Go to a fairly quiet place where you are not likely to be disturbed.
Make a list of every goal you have.
Include goals about finances, relationships, and your career.
Be as specific as possible.

These experiences have taught me that change, which is an essential part of our life, can have both positive and negative effects.
It may hurt us a little when it occurs,
but if we accept it as a growth process, it will bring benefits in the long run.
My best advice is to “go with the flow.”
Keep an open mind and be optimistic.

Hermit crabs occupy the empty shells of dead sea snails for protection while still retaining their mobility.
They are capable of discriminating among a selection of shells of various sizes and species,
and they choose the one that fits the body most closely.
Hermit crabs change shells as they grow, although in some marine environments a large enough variety of shells may not be available
and hermit crabs may be forced to occupy a smaller-than-ideal “house."
When a shell becomes too small for the hermit crab to occupy,
it will sometimes become aggressive and fight other hermit crabs to gain a more comfortable one.

Today the suburban ring can be regarded as an outer city which increasingly controls the economic and social life of the metropolitan sector.
At the same time, it should be noted that the rapid growth of suburbs has created many problems.
For example, numerous suburbs have had trouble raising enough money for such essential services as police and fire protection.
Furthermore, residents often engage in debates over the quality of the schools in the communities and the amount of taxes required to support them.
Particularly in older suburbs, population change may produce conflict between social groups.

If you take a closer look at your life, you'll find that you have a life purpose you've been trying to carry out.
For some people, their purpose may be as simple as raising a family or being a good friend or emotionally encouraging others.
These purposes may sound simple or insignificant, but consider how they can be a pleasure to many other lives.
Your life purpose is eventually what benefits you and others as well.
I mean, if you do something that gives you a better life and makes you feel better, it's for the benefit of all.
Sometimes, what you are aiming at may seem like an unimportant detail, but it does good to the whole.

As more women have careers and important jobs, a new kind of family problem is becoming more common.
What happens when a woman is offered a better job in another city?
If she accepts the offer, that means her husband has to leave his job, too.
He may have trouble finding another job in the same city.
Or, the job he finds may not be as good as his old one.
In the past, women often had to face this problem when their husbands found new jobs.
But now it is more and more common for men.

The problems of the nation's cities―pollution, crime, riots, a lack of planning, transportation―are bad, but they were worse in the so-called "good old days," according to Dr. Charles Adrian.
He gives pollution from automobiles as one example.
He agrees that it may be bad now, but he states that there was a lot of pollution from horses and other animals in American cities in the 19th century.
"Most cities had their own slaughterhouses where cows and pigs were killed a century ago.
They were careless about throwing out the remains of the animals and that sort of thing," he said.
"And the sewer system for waste disposal was almost nonexistent."

Reading a book is a kind of conversation.
You may think that it is not, because the author does all of the talking, and you have nothing to say; but if you think that, you do not realize your duty as a reader―and you are not using your opportunities.
Actually, the reader is the one who has the last word.
The author has said what he wanted to say, and then it is the reader's turn.
The conversation, however, should be an orderly one, with first one talking and then the other.

Good fiction teaches us about ourselves and about our relationships with other people; it shows us too that others may have a point of view which is as valid as ours and should be respected.

Teacher: I see your point.
But, well, I'm afraid that may be too extreme an approach.
Don't you think so, Tom?
Tom,
Tom: Well...
Tom:
I think it's possible.
As a matter of fact, I bike to school everyday.
That's why I think I stay in shape.

We all agree that the aim of education is to fit the child for life; however, there are as many opinions as to how that fitting is to be done as there are men to hold them.
For example, fully half of our teachers cannot see that imagination is the root of all civilization.
Like love, imagination may very fairly be said to 'make the world go round,' but, as it works out of sight, it is given very little credit for what it performs.

Americans see much of life as a race for success.
For them, equality means that everyone should have equal chance to enter the race and win.
In other words, equality of opportunity may be thought of as an ethical rule.
It helps ensure that the race for success is a fair one and that a person does not win just because he or she was born into a wealthy family.
President Abraham Lincoln expressed this belief in the 1860s when he said, "We wish to allow the humblest man an equal chance to get rich with everybody else.
When one starts poor, as most do in the race of life, a free society is such that he knows he can better his condition: he knows that there is no fixed condition of labor for his whole life."

Every part of history is closely connected with every other part and melts imperceptibly into it; and no part of it would be quite as it is if it were not for the parts that went before.
No period in history can ever be considered quite separately, however different it may be from those that precede it.

"We say that the universe is expanding."
"What makes it do that?"
"Most astronomers agree that the expanding universe can only have one explanation: Once upon a time, about 15 billion years ago, all substance in the universe was assembled in a relatively small area.
The substance was so dense that gravity made it terrifically hot.
Finally it got so hot and so tightly packed that it exploded.
We call this explosion the Big Bang."
"Just the thought of it makes me shudder."
"The Big Bang caused all the substance in the universe to be expelled in all directions, and as it gradually cooled, it formed stars and galaxies and moons and planets..."
"But I thought you said the universe was still expanding?"
"Yes I did, and it's expanding precisely because of this explosion billions of years ago.
The universe has no timeless geography.
The universe is a happening.
The universe is an explosion.
Galaxies continue to fly through the universe away from each other at colossal speeds."
"Will they go on doing that for ever?"
"That's one possibility.
But there is another.
You may recall that Alberto told Sophie about the two forces that cause the planets to remain in constant orbit round the sun?"
"Weren't they gravity and inertia?
"Right, and the same thing applies to the galaxies.
Because even though the universe continues to expand, the force of gravity is working the other way.
And one day, in a couple of billion years, gravity will perhaps cause the heavenly bodies to be packed together again as the force of the huge explosion begins to weaken.
Then we would get a reverse explosion, a so-called implosion.
But the distances are so great that it will happen like a movie that is run in slow motion.
You might compare it with what happens when you release the air from a balloon."
"Will all the galaxies be drawn together in a tight nucleus again?"
"Yes, you've got it.
But what will happen then?"
"There would be another Big Bang and the universe would start expanding again.
Because the same natural laws are in operation.
And so new stars and galaxies will form."

Difficult as it may be in some instances to ascertain quite accurately whether an overworked man had perfectly sound bodily health to begin with, the facts remain, that the excessive exercise of the mental powers is injurious to bodily health, and that all intellectual labour proceeds upon a physical basis.
No man can safely forget this and act as if he were a pure spirit, superior to physical consideration.

Wendy May, 34, who teaches aerobics in Atlanta, might argue that progress
comes first, then the education of the recalcitrant male:
"The discovery is not that it's sexy to be healthy but that it feels good.
I think most men are frightened by muscles, maybe even by fitness.
Now though, I don't think they have a choice. They may as well decide
it's sexy, because it's here."

If you will ask some one who has at some time acted in a manner for which
he would be punished if it became known, you will find that when discovery
seemed imminent, the person in question repented of his crime. I do not
say that this would apply to the professional thief who expects a certain
amount of prison as a trade risk, but it applies to what may be called
the respectable offender, such as the bank manager who has embezzled in
a moment of stress, or the clergyman who has been tempted by passion into
some sexual irregularity. Such men can forget their crime when there seems
little chance of detection, but when they are found out or in grave danger
of being so, they wish they had been more virtuous, and this wish may give
them a lively sense of the enormity of their sin.

All of my studies indicate that a decided majority of the Americans are
dissatisfied with their jobs and wish they were doing something else.
What about you? Is your job work or fun?
If it is work, then you would probably be wise to take immediate steps
to get out of it. Your life is too short and too valuable to waste in work.
If you don't get out now, you may end up like the frog that is placed
in a pot of fresh water on the stove. As the temperature in the pot
gradually increased, the frog feels restless and uncomfortable, but
not uncomfortable enough to jump out. Without being aware that a change
is taking place, he is gradually lulled into unconsciousness―boiled.

Everybody in the world is seeking happiness―and there is one sure way
to find it. That is by controlling your thoughts. Happiness doesn't
depend on outer conditions. It depends on inner conditions.
It isn't what you have or what you are or where you are or what you are
doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about it.
For example, two people may be in the same place, doing the same thing;
both may have about an equal amount of money and prestige―and yet one
may be miserable and the other happy. Why? Because of a different mental
attitude. I saw just as many happy faces among the Chinese coolies
sweating and toiling in the devastating heat of China for seven cents
a day as I see on Park Avenue.
"Nothing is good or bad," said Shakespeare, "but thinking makes it so."
Abe Lincoln once remarked, "Most folks are about as happy as they make
up their minds to be."

The habit of thinking by means of comparison is a fatal one.
When anything pleasant occurs, it should be enjoyed to the full, without
stopping to think that it is not so pleasant as something else that may
possibly be happening to someone else.
"Yes," says the envious man, "this is a sunny day, and it is springtime,
and the birds are singing, but I understand that the springtime in
Sicily is a thousand times more beautiful."

A:Oh, here it is. Thank you so much.
B:Be careful. You'd better keep them in your pocket.

는 Be quiet 「계속
Keep the
wallet and the passport with you라고 말한다.
이나 Look out!
You'd better~를 You may as well~을 바꾸어 You may as well keep
them in your pocket으로 말해도 된다.

Growing as a person may take you to new places and present new
challenges. These may be stressful, but feeling stress is a natural,
necessary part of recognizing a weakness and trying out a new behavior.
It is often comfortable and easy to stay the way we are. Giving up old
comforts and habits is very hard. It is small wonder, then, that people
dislike changing. Yet it needs to be remembered that efforts to change
lead frequently to important improvement and growth in our lives.

「The Power Of Love」 ― Jennifer Rush
The whispers in the morning
Of lovers sleeping tight
Are rolling by like thunder now
As I look in your eyes
I hold on to your body
And feel each move you make
Your voice is warm and tender
A love that I could not forsake
* *
'Cause I'm your lady
And you are my man
Whenever you reach for me
I'll do all that I can
-
Lost is how I'm feeling
Lying in your arms
When the world outside is too much to take
That all ends when I'm with you
Even though there may be times
It seems I'm far away
But never wonder where I am
'Cause I am always by your side
* * repeat
* * *
We're headin' for something
Somewhere I've never been
Sometimes I am frightened
But I'm ready to learn
About the power of love
-
The sound of your heart beating
Made it clear suddenly
The feeling that I can't go on
Is light years away
-
'Cause I'm your lady
And you are my man
Whenever you reach for me
I'm gonna do all that I can
* * * repeat twice
The power of love
The power of love
Sometimes I am frightened
But I'm ready to learn

Language has two primary purposes, expression and communication.
In its most primitive forms it differs little from some other forms of behaviour.
A man may express sorrow by sighing, or by saying 'alas!' or 'woe is me!'
He may communicate by pointing or by saying 'look'.
Expression and communication are not necessarily separated;
if you say 'look' because you see a ghost, you may say it in a tone that expresses horror.
This applies not only to elementary forms of language;
in poetry, and especially in songs, emotion and information are conveyed by the same means.
Music may be considered as a form of language in which emotion is divorced from information, while the telephone book gives information without emotion.
But in ordinary speech both elements are usually present.

He and others believe that once proved, it may be the answer to conflicting theories on the origin and fate of the universe.

"If life is already developing in other solar systems, there is little chance of catching it at the stage at which humans are now," Hawking said.
"As we explore galaxies, we might find primitive life but not beings like us."

TV historical dramas often fictionalize historical facts for some reasons such as amusement.
In this case, the viewers may misunderstand the historical truths.
Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that the dramas of this kind may revitalize the viewer's interest in our past.
If you write a history drama, to which aspect would you give more weight? Historical truth or amusement?

Over the last 400,000 years the Earth's climate has been unstable, with very significant temperature changes, going from a warm climate to an ice age in as rapidly as a few decades.
These rapid changes suggest that climate may be quite sensitive to internal or external climate forcings and feedbacks.
As can be seen from the blue curve(lower), temperatures have been less variable during the last 10,000 years.
Based on the incomplete evidence available, it is unlikely that global mean temperatures have varied by more than 1°C in a century during this period.
The information presented on this graph indicates a strong correlation between carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere and temperature.
A possible scenario: anthropogenic emissions of GHGs could bring the climate to a state where it reverts to the highly unstable climate of the pre-ice age period.
Rather than a linear evolution, the climate follows a non-linear path with sudden and dramatic surprises when GHG levels reach an as-yet unknown trigger point.

Still, the billions of dollars spent on AIDS research over the past 20 years has not been wasted.
As scientists learn more about how HIV co-opts the human body to survive, they are realizing that drugs alone may not be enough.
To contain the virus effectively, it may take a balance between drug therapy that keeps HIV levels low and a bolstered immune system that can then target and destroy the remaining virus.
Until scientists find a vaccine, however, they may control but never cure the century's final scourge.

Astronomers have measured the abundance of helium throughout our galaxy
and in other galaxies as well. Helium has been found in old stars, in
relatively young ones, in interstellar gas, and in the distant objects
known as quasars. Helium nuclei have also been found to be constituents
of cosmic rays that fall on the earth (cosmic "rays" are not really a
form of radiation; they consist of rapidly moving particles of numerous
different kinds). It doesn't seem to make very much difference where the
helium is found. Its relative abundance never seems to vary much. In
some places, there may be slightly more of it ; in others, slightly
less, but the ratio of helium to hydrogen nuclei always remains about
the same.

AIDS victims suffer knowing that there is not yet a cure for their
disease; it is terminal. To add to this suffering, AIDS victims often
experience discrimina- tion. They might not be hired for a job or they
may lose a job if it is known that they have AIDS; they may not be able
to rent apartments as easily as they could without the disease; the
courts will often convict people who have purposely spread the AIDS
virus, imposing unusually harsh sentences on them; and insurance
companies may refuse to offer health or life insurance coverage to
clients who indicate that they are HIV positive and, therefore, at high
risk of getting AIDS.

The pluralistic vision of the human aspiration to live a good life must
not be interpreted on the model of there being a common destination that
we may reach in different ways. The notion of a common destination is
itself deeply at odds with pluralism. If a metaphor is wanted, artistic
creation is perhaps less unsatisfactory than others. We make our lives
the way artists make works of art. We and artists start from some
context, some tradition, some educa- tional influences on us; we are
limited by what we bring to it by way of talents, imagination, and
skill, as well as by the available possibilities and by the demands and
expectations of other people in our context; and then we do what we can,
and we succeed, fail, or banally fall somewhere in between. But the
product, the life or the work of art, is going to be different in each
case, because the contributions made to it by the tradition, by our
individuality, and by the mixture we concoct of the two are also
different.

Allelomimetric behavior may be defined as behavior in which two or more
individual animals do the same thing, with some degree of mutual stimulation and
coordination.

Listen, till you can tell me what you were doing at Dunlop Plaza with Richard Walsh,

Bon voyage!
Please give my best
regards (wishes) to ~ 라고 합니다.
It's time for me to be going.
또는 It's time I were going. Bon voyage는
프랑스어에서 나온 어구로서 goodbye, have a nice trip이라는

LEAVING KOREA
Mr. Lee: I think your trip to Korea has been very fruitful,
not only for yourself but for our entire mutual relationship.
Mr. West: Yes, it has. This month has passed so quickly. The
schedule was tight, but I was able to enjoy my stay
immensely, thanks to you.
M. Lee: I'm glad to hear that. As you know, I may have to
visit you in the near future, and, if I do, I'd like to meet
Mrs. West too. Please give her my best regards.
Mr. West: Thank you. I think it's time to board the plane.
Thanks again, for all you did for me. Goodbye, Mr. Lee.
Mr. Lee: Goodbye, and bon voyage!

<작문 예>
A. It may safely be said that those who assume that books are
to be read by borrowing know nothing about the true joy of
reading. These people think of reading as a mere means of
killing time.
B. It is not too much to say that a man who takes it for
granted that reading books is borrowing them of others does
not know anything about the true joy from reading. Such a man
thinks reading is nothing but a mere means of killing time.
(1) ~와 거리가 멀다: know nothing about ~; be a complete
stranger
It may [or can] safely be said that ~
; We can safely say that ~
(3) 그저 시간 죽이기: a mere means of killing time; only for
an idle hour
They took it for granted that I would attend the reception.
He always assumes that his friends are interested in what he
is doing.
There is a man who always thinks that money is to be borrowed
(from others).

What's the percentage in commission?
-
은 What's your thoughts about ~, Have you
got any idea about ~ 등 입니다.
비율」percentage in agent's commission 이 되는 것에 주의 해야
Dialogue
COMMISSION FOR AGENTS
Mr. West: I've checked the draft document, and one thing I
want to add is the commission for the agent.
Mr. Lee: That may be necessary if we can expand our business
further.
Mr. West: Do you have any thoughts about the percentage in
agent's commission?
Mr. Lee: I think it should be 10 percent or so, but our FOB
prices do not include your agent's commission.
Mr. West: I'm not sure yet whether we'll need many agents or
not, but anyway let me think it over.
Mr. Lee: If I want to include something about this in our
agreement, will you let us know your proposal as soon as
possible?
Mr. West: Yes, at our meeting tomorrow, if I can.
실패는 depend on the partner라고 말할 정도입니다.

Defending a policy he once denounced as cuddling, Clinton

"I don't think this is a political gainer for the
