surprise는 가장 일반적인 말로, 불의의 습격을 당하듯이, 뜻밖의 일을 당해서 놀란다는 뜻이다.
I'm surprised at your concern. 이것은 비교적 새로운 뜻이고, 본래의 옛 뜻은 '놀라도록 불시에 습격하다‘(come upon another suddenly and with starting effect), ’방심하고 있는 틈을 타서 치다’. 이 옛 뜻에서 흔히 능동태로 사람이 주어가 되어, Her friends planned to surprise her on her birthday with a gift.처럼 쓰이고, 새로운 뜻으로는 물건이 주어가 되어, Their gift greatly surprised and pleased her.처럼 쓰인다.
