business는 제조업자·농업자 같은 생산자의 활동과 대조되는, 상인·은행가·재정가 따위의 활동을 가리킨다. 그러나 넓은 뜻에서는, 상인·은행가만이 아니고, 생산자·상품의 운송업자의 활동도 포함된다. 그들의 궁극 목적이 상품을 공급하는 데에 있고 자기의 부를 증가하는 데에 있기 때문이다.
