balance는 처음에 '저울'을 가리키는 말로 쓰이다가 의미가 확장
이 되어서 '저울의 평형상태' 까지 지칭하는 말로 쓰이게 되었습니다.
그러다가 16세기 경에 회계에서 대변과 차변의 균형, 즉 대변과 차변
의 액수를 비슷하게 만드는 것을 balance라고 불렀습니다. 아시다시피
장부에서 대변은 자산의 증가를 나타내는 란을 나타내고 차변은 자산
의 감소를 나타내는 란이지요. balance가 '나머지, 잔고' 라는 뜻으로
쓰이는 것은 회계에만 한정된 표현이지요. balance가 이러한 뜻으로
쓰이게 된 것은 19세기 영국에서부터로 대변에 남아있는 잔고는
balance in hand (손 안에 남아있는 잔고) 이렇게 불렀고 차변에 남은 잔
고는 지불할 잔고이기 때문에 balance due 라고 이야기를 합니다. 그
리고 opening balance 를 직역하면 통장을 열어볼 때의 잔고, 즉 우리
말로 '이월 잔고'를 뜻하는 말입니다. 이월 잔고라는 것은 매 월 모든
결산이 끝난 다음에 통장에 남은 잔고를 뜻합니다.
