disaster는 별의 불길한 배치(a bad configuration of the stars), 즉 불행과 불운(bad luck)이 어원적인 뜻이다. 또한 부주의·태만·그릇된 판단, 또는 태풍·홍수 같은 자연력으로 불시에 일어나는 불행한 발생사를 말하기도 한다.

calamity는 한 개인이나 일반 대중에게 깊은 고통(distress)·비애(sorrow)를 가져오는 큰 불행을 가리킨다.

cataclysm은 어원적 뜻은 대홍수(deluge)이고 지질학의 지각의 격변의 뜻으로 쓰이고 있다. 비유적으로 사용되어, 옛 질서의 전복, 또는 격렬한 사회적·정치적 변동을 가져오는 사태나 사건에 대해서 쓰인다.
