When I was studying for my doctorate at the University of Southern California,
I spent every weekend in my study that I had established in our garage.
One Sunday a friend took my family to Disneyland.
They phoned me from there: “Hey, John! I bet you wish you were here with us!”
First, I grumbled at them.
Then I felt sorry for myself, sitting alone in a hot garage while others were having fun.
And then I reminded myself why I was there.
I wanted to be Dr. Anderson.
I enjoyed the thought of myself as Dr. Anderson.
Ignoring the temperature and the phone call, I went back to work.

Success is the act of trying to improve upon the things you're already doing.
It's growing and developing.
It's accepting bigger and greater challenges.
It's not being afraid of making a mistake, suffering a setback, or failing.
It's trying to do your very best.
And if, in the end, your very best wasn't quite good enough, you just have to go back to work and prepare a bit harder for the next time.
Nobody succeeds 100 percent in anything they do.
When you're able to recognize and accept this fact of life, you realize that failure and losing are as much a part of the game of life as are success and winning.

The history of fan dates back to the ancient times in Korea.
Murals from ancient tombs show that the ones made of feathers were in use even before the 4th century.
At first, it was just a device to cool with.
But other uses were added as bamboo and paper came into use.
For example, people covered their faces with it to avoid strong sunlight or to hide from their creditors,
and sometimes they even flapped off flies with it.
This device was also used in an artistic way by ancient scholars.
They wrote a poem or painted a picture on it.
In itself, it is just an appliance.
However, a brush stroke on its white canvas creates a transformation and makes it a work of art.

Jack arrived home from work one sunny afternoon.
He noticed a letter on the hall table.
He picked up the letter and opened it.
The letter began:
“Dear Jack, Congratulations! You have won an all-expenses-paid 5-day trip to Fiji!
Thank you for entering the competition at Franklin’s Supermarket at Downtown Shopping Center.”
He couldn't believe how lucky he was.
He went into the kitchen and found a bottle of champagne.
He sat back in the sofa and sipped on his glass of champagne.
Then he noticed the date of the trip―March 20th.
Jack screamed with horror.
“I can't believe it! I'm going to kill the mail carrier! They're always late!”
Today was March 21st.
Jack
Jack

I was working as a short-order cook at two restaurants in the same neighborhood.
On a Saturday night, I was finishing up the dinner shift at one restaurant and hurrying to report to work at the second place.
But I was delayed because one table kept sending back an order of hash browns, insisting they were too cold.
I replaced them several times, but still the customers were dissatisfied.
When I was able to leave, I raced out the door and arrived at my second job.
A server immediately handed me my first order.
“Make sure these hash browns are hot,” she said,
“because these people just left a restaurant down the street that kept serving them cold ones."

“Boys and girls, playtime is over, get back to work.”
Most of us learned early in life that work and play are separate, and that if you are playing you could not possibly be working.
But to have a livable work environment, a certain amount of playfulness or lightheartedness is required.
An innovative environment demands even more playfulness.
Assuming the matter-of-fact attitude may seem more efficient, but it constricts one's capacity to generate new solutions when needed.
The freedom to be playful expands creative opportunities.
The spirit that allows people to wear a peculiar tie or to laugh out loud without fearing what others think is the same spirit that encourages them to consider new ideas.

In an Arabic country, women cannot appear in public unless they are covered from head to toe in loose black scarves and robes.
They interpret Islam, their religion, to mean that all women should be shielded from view.
Women are also not allowed to drive.
When they ride in a car, they must sit in the back seat.
They cannot travel without male consent, either.
A wife has to obtain a permission slip from her husband before she can check into a hotel or leave the country.
Women are not allowed to work or study alongside men.
Their Islamic religion also forbids them from entering cemeteries because their mourning might distract men.

because for some mysterious reason they want to.

MSF was begun by a small group of French doctors including B. Kouchner
back in 1971. Over the years, many doctors from around the world joined
the organization. The group quickly became known for its work in helping
the hungry and ill. They firmly believe that all those who need a
doctor's help, no matter where they are, have a right to get medical
care. They sometimes risk their lives to provide such care. The
organization won the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize for its work on several
continents since its foundation.

Back in New York City by 1910, Laurent began carving pieces such as The
Priestess, which reveals his fascination with African, pre-Columbian,
and South Pacific art. Taking a walnut plank, the sculptor carved the
expressive, stylized design. It is one of the earliest examples of
direct carving in American sculpture. The plank's form dictated the
rigidly frontal view and the low relief. Even its irregular shape must
have appealed to Laurent as a break with a long-standing tradition that
required a sculptor to work within a perfect rectangle or square.
1910년 New Work City로 돌아와서 Laurent 는 The Priestess 와 같은
Laurent

“Hold your horses," is an English idiom which dates back to the 19th century.
“Hold your horses."
In the 19th century, if a coachman found that his horses ran too fast, he'd have to hold back on the *reins.
This would pull the horses to a stop.
In horse racing, some new horsemen would start their horses too soon and the starter would have to say, "Hold your horse."
Now this saying means "Don't make haste".
For example, if you see someone starting his work in haste, you could say, "Hold your horses and look before you leap."

"Indeed there isn't"... I should really get back to work.

Get out.

I wanted this to work so much.
I mean I'm still in there, changing his diapers, pickin' his fleas... but he's just phoning it in.
Just so hard to accept the fact that something you love so much doesn't love you back.
...I think that bitch cracked my tooth.

Excuse me, could we get an egg over here, still in the shell?
Thanks. An egg?
Yeah, you're gonna go up to her and say, "Here's your egg back, I'm returning your egg."
I think it's winning.
I think it's insane.
She'll love it.
Go with the egg, my friend.
- Think it'll work?
- No, it's suicide. The man's got an egg.
You can not do this.

Your nights and weekends are yours.
I applaud whatever you want to do,
as long as it's not on my time.
You're telling me to get back to work.
I am.
What you're really telling me is to fuck off.
I'm telling you both.

I'm gonna get back to work.
Please do.

Yeah, this performance standards thing.
- The teachers unions are gonna-- -
Leave it in.
- But we could delete it.
- I'll handle the unions. What else?
Anything?
Conjugal visits?
I'll get back to work.

But the most important count I do has nothing to do with work.
It's the number of days since April 4, 1999.
As of this morning, that's 5,185.
The bigger that number gets, the more it frightens me,
because I know all it takes is one drink to go back to zero.

He propositioned you?
Called me into his office,
said couldn't afford to start taking anyone new on,
even part-time.
Put his hand on my knee,
said he might be able to make an exception.
So he starts sliding his hand up my thigh.
So I stood up and I tell him I should get back to work.
He says, "Stay."
He unbuckled his belt.
Did you?
No, I walked out of the office and got back to my tables.
Next day, I came into work, told me to go home.
I was fired.

When you came to Jack's rescue back there with your little performance,
it reminded me of something.
Yeah? What?
When we came into work together, about a month ago, Lisa made some wisecrack.
You came up with this great BS story, early breakfast meeting with District Three.
I was really impressed with how convincing a liar you were.

What's your point, Tony?
I still wanna know what happened with Jack and Mason.
- I already told you. - And I don't believe you.
- Maybe I should ask Mason. - A presidential candidate's life's at stake.
Maybe you should get back to work.

I didn't find anything useful in the back.
Work schedule. Look. Dan: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
- Great. Is there a contact number? - No. And the office is locked.
- My husband might be able to help with this. - How would he be able to do that?
- This is Jack Bauer. Leave a message. - He turned his cellphone off.
How would your husband be able to help us?
He works for the government. He has access to those things. Hang on a second.

I admire that, tryin' to work through the problems together.
My ex left and never looked back, went home to Australia.
She hasn't spoken with Janet or me for almost ten years.
I'm really sorry, Alan.

- Hi, this is Alan. - Alan, Jack Bauer.
Can't thank you enough for helping out with this.
- I'm just glad the girls are with each other. - Me too. Look, I'm stuck at work.
Yeah. Teri said...
I would appreciate it if you would hang out at the store and wait for them to return.
Uh, I don't think they're gonna be back here for at least a couple of hours.
It's a pretty rough neighbourhood and I'd hate for there to be a problem when they return.
- Sure. We'll stay. - Thank you.

I don't wanna tell you how to do your job,
but not letting me know where you are, holding back information...
How can I help you without you letting me?
Do you think that it's possible
that someone from within the agency is behind the hit on Palmer?
Anything's possible. Do you have a lead?
No. Not really.
Why do I feel like you're not telling me the truth?
If you've got something, tell me. I'll work it up with you.
No, I'm...
I'm just thinking out loud.
OK. Fine.

So to sum it up, Jack leaves his wife, shacks up with you for a while,
gets bored, and then moves back home, leaving you out in the cold.
My personal life is not your concern.
- It is if it affects your work.
- It doesn't affect my work.
How long have you been with the agency, Nina? Six years, seven?
Seven years.
I remember when you first joined. You were goin' places. Everybody knew it.
It hasn't quite happened for you yet, has it?
- You ever wonder why?
- I've done all right.
But you could have done so much better. You had a great reputation once.
You know what your reputation is now?
Jack's flunky. His lapdog.
This is your chance to get back on track, Nina.
He's a loose cannon. Rules don't apply to Jack Bauer.
He does what he wants when he wants, and he doesn't care whose life it affects.
He shot me with a trank gun, for God's sakes.
- You withheld information.
- I was following orders.
Maybe he's following orders you don't know about.
He violated lockdown, and he left you holding the bag.
If he cared about you, he wouldn't have put you in that position.
Let me ask you, would you have done that to him?
Fact is, I'm just asking you to do your job and tell me where he is.
I don't know.

- Is this line safe?
- Tell me about my daughter.
- Not till you get me out.
- How do you know where she is?
- I heard some guys talking. Guys I work with.
- What guys?
- All you need to know is they have her.
- They're gonna call me in 20 minutes.
- Where?
- Back where you first saw me.
- San Fernando Road?
Yeah. But if I don't answer, they'll know something's wrong, so get me out.
- I don't know if I can.
- I'm the one chance you got to find her.
I'm not there for that call, the chance is over.
Better think ofsomething fast.

The minute Maureen breaks the story, you'll free-fall in the polls.
Then the media'll start churning this thing 24-7.
They'll pick you clean, then go to work on the bones.
Chances are the party'll try to cut bait.
So, I'd say you're textbook unelectable.
- So I'm right to withdraw from the race. - No. That's the last thing you should do.
- You just got through telling me I can't win. - I told you what to expect so you can.
If we handle this right, I think you can come back from this.

Who are you? What's goin' on?
A few hours ago someone kidnapped my wife and daughter.
I don't get it. Then why are you runnin' from the police?
What's your name? Lauren?
I'm Jack. I work for a special branch of the government.
Last night I was given a very important assignment.
Right now someone is trying to stop me from doing it.
You don't believe me, do you?
If I were you, I wouldn't believe me either.
What I wanna know is, why do you have me here? You got a car, you got a place to hide.
I can't afford to be taken back into custody.
If they get close enough, I have to make them believe I'm willing to do something crazy.
Like shoot me?
I'm not gonna shoot you.
You know somethin'?
I think I believe you.

- Are you OK? - Oh, no need to worry.
- We heard there was someone with a gun. - Um, it's not clear what happened.
And I'm afraid I'm intact and as grouchy as ever. So let's all get back to work.
- Where's Keith? - He left about a half-hour ago.
- Did he say where? - No.
- Look, I'm a little worried about him. - Why?
He wasn't being himself. He stormed out of here like he was angry.
- I'm sure he'll be all right, Anna. Thanks. - OK.
Should we... send someone after him?
No. No, he's OK. He just needs some time alone.

Everyone, I'm sorry to tell you Jamey Farrell tried to commit suicide a few minutes ago.
Fortunately, she's still alive,
and they're doing everything they can to keep her that way.
I know it won't be easy to put this out of our minds, but we don't have a choice.
We still believe that Palmer's life is in danger,
which means we all have to get back to work now.

I think your father is the best man that I've ever known.
But he can be... difficult.
And his job doesn't help.
You remember a couple of years ago when he went away for a few weeks?
For some training thing.
That's what he told us, but I'm sure it was a mission.
He wouldn't say and maybe he probably couldn't.
Anyway, when he came back, he was... different.
He was distant and... preoccupied
and other times he was just angry.
He did everything he could to keep it from you.
But things between us weren't so great.
I suppose I could have been more patient.
So we decided to try being apart.
But it didn't work.
Good.
I just want us to be together again.

Good morning.
Things have been out of control here today. Starting now, they're back in control.
Most of you know that an attempt was made on Senator Palmer at about 8am.
You may not know that Jack Bauer was apparently involved in that attempt.
The nature of his involvement isn't clear,
but he has escaped custody and is considered a fugitive.
We therefore have two objectives: Find Jack Bauer,
and make a quick and accurate assessment of the threat, if any, facing Senator Palmer.
I know most of you have been up more than 24 hours.
Too bad. Nobody so much as yawns until we accomplish our objective.
If anybody has a problem with that, now would be a good time to resign.
Good. Let's get back to work.
Specific assignments will be confirmed or revised within the hour.

Look, if you don't have any more pearls of wisdom, I'd like to get back to work.
By all means.

I need you to compromise the chain of custody.
Just like that?
We got a slam-dunk on a three-time rapist. And he's just gonna walk?
I have to have this case kicked.
I'm already on probation.
Give them an excuse; you're good at that.
You work the graveyard. You pulled a double and you were tired.
It could happen to anybody.
Don't worry, I got your back.
Yeah, I feel you back there. Believe me.

- Can we get back to work? - Yeah.

Show me the the bottom of your shoe.
Now yours.
You fellas were both in the kitchen.
We didn't see any bodies in there, so I didn't think twice about walking on the surface.
Alright, yours were the only clean prints we found.
Thanks, you can get back to work.

I was 13,
and nobody noticed that my clothes were getting bigger.
Nice, huh?
Brenda may hate me for what I did,
but I protected her.
I did that much.
- 'Night, guys. - See you, Cath.
Good work.
It'll be back to normal in 24 hours.
Normal'd be nice.

Look, the guy was a real ass.
In what way?
You know why I fly first class,
other than the fact that my company pays for it? Because I can work.
I have to work.
And he wouldn't let you?
No he, he, he kept banging the back on my seat with his foot.
You know, like in a movie theater, when somebody's kicking your seat?
Imagine that all the way from Atlanta to Las Vegas.
Are you telling me this guy was kicking the back on your seat for the entire flight?
Maybe not the entire flight.
You know like, like, Dallas to Las Vegas.

Could we get back to work, please.
Yeah.
그래

Well, those orange jackets over there
appeared to match the materials the bombs were wrapped in.
I used to wear those to go to work.
You were let go by Thrift-Right last year, you lost a court battle to get your job back.
In fact, they filed a TRO against you for throwing furniture around their headquarters last July.

Kevin Shepherd six stab wounds to the upper torso.
One to the back. Five to the front.
And his wife?
Amy Shepherd, one slice across the neck. Right to left.
Work of a lefty.
The blade transected the jugular vein and both carotids.
Hard to scream when your throat's been cut.
Defense wounds.

All on his own.
Go ahead, Mrs. Anderson.
He had gotten food in his windpipe, his face was turning red.
Steve was at work. So, I...
I patted him on the back, and on his, his stomach
and finally I turned him upside down and I started shaking him.
To get the food out, to, to dislodge it. And I did.
But I realized that I had hurt him, so I called 9-1-1.

What makes you say that?
Well, think about it --
he grew up in the late 1800s. There were no appliances back then.
His mother had to do everything by hand,
just backbreaking work from sunup to sundown,
not to mention the countless other sacrifices she probably had to make to take care of her family.

Mom, what's going on?
Oh, I'm throwing you out.
I've separated all your things into two sides.
This side is yours, Danielle, and the other one is Andrew's.
Okay, you-- you've lost it.
Where are we supposed to live?
Darned if I know.
Uh, Danielle, everything in the north quadrant of your side is clothes and books and such,
and the south side are miscellaneous items.
Mom, this isn't going to work, okay? I'm not giving up my car.
That's a smart idea, because you're probably going to have to sleep in it for a while.
Mom, you can't stop us from going back inside the house.

Why not?
Andrew...
you know, these --these last few months have been incredibly difficult for me.
There are a lot of things that I've got to work out for myself,
and I can't do it if you're living with me.
I'm sorry.
I don't care, all right?
I'm not going back there.
I don't think you have a choice.
But, dad --
unh-unh.
Come on now. Don't --

You know, maybe there's a way that we can work that in, but back to me.
You know, Lynette, this is kind of a fantastic idea.
Can we go nation wide with this?
