No sooner ~ than… 의 예문은 그 대부분이 no sooner 과거완료형~ than 과거시제로 되어있지만 예문처럼 no sooner현재완료형 ~ than 현재시제의 경우도 있다. 예문이 과거의 일로서 이야기할 수 있는 경우라면 현재완료→과거완료, 현재→과거와 차이가 있을 뿐이다.

(또는 The moment) one typhoon has passed, the next is on the way.

(5) 지체하다 비싼 호텔에 하룻밤 머물지 않으면 안 되었다.
→ Force A to-부정사도 무생물 주어가 흔히 사용된다. 물론 사람을 주어로 하여 be forced to-부정사라는 패턴을 사용할 수도 있다.
→ We couldn't help staying ~은 잘못. Couldn't help는 I couldn't help laughing 「웃지 않을 수 없었다」처럼 「자신을 억누를 수 없는 경우」에만 사용할 수 있다. Spend (for) one night는 안 됨. Stay 는 자동사이고 spend는 타동사이기 때문이다.
→ Because of the delay, we had to spend one night at an expensive hotel.
ANS) The delay forced us to stay overnight in an expensive hotel.

(2) 그는 4년 동안의 대학 생활에 종지부를 찍고 이번 봄 공무원으로서 새 출발을 하게 된다.
→ 종지부를 찍다: 끝내다 put an and to～ ; finish～ ; come to an end
→ 공무원으로서 새 출발을 하다: embark on a career as a civil servant; start one's career as a public servant; start to work as a public servant.
(ANS) After his four years at university have come to an end this spring, he is going to embark on a career as a civil servant.

(1) 세계의 인구증가는 전반적으로는 둔화되고 있으나 많은 개발도상국가의 인구증가율은 계속 높다. 1980～1982년 사이에 개발도상국가의 경제는 주로 경제침체와 국제원조의 삭감으로 년간 1.9% 성장률은 이룩했는데 그 반면에 인구증가율은 2.02% 였다. 그런데 빈곤도가 가장 높은 국가들의 개인소득은 1960～1981년 동안에 1% 상승한 데 불과하다. 오늘날 세계에서 가장 부유한 국가의 개인소득은 가장 빈곤한 국가의 개인소득의 220 배가 되고 있다. 이 개발도상국가의 선진국가간의 격차는 앞으로 더욱 벌어질 것이다.

(ANS) We arrived at Chonju a little after six o'clock. Yong-ok and I had to take a local bus from there and travel one more hour. I wanted to go to the bus station right away but Tol-nam suggested that since it was supper-time we all go into the town and eat something. I was well aware that it was I who should have suggested having dinner together, so I readily accepted his idea.

(9) 김박사님께서는 지금 자리에 안 계십니다만, 나중에 댁으로 전화 드리라고 말씀드릴까요?
→ 자리에 안 계시다: is not at one's desk; is not here, is out 등으로 표현
→ 나중에: later (on); in a little while; in a few minutes; in a short while.
→ 약간 의미의 차이는 있지만 Shall I ask him to phone you? 도 가능합니다.
(ANS) Dr. Kim is not at his desk (right) now. Shall I have him call you at home later (on)? 또는 Shall I get him to phone you at home later on?

(1) 다음날 어슬어슬해서다. 그날 따라 몹시 추웠다. 늦도록 단골 찻집에 있노라니까 관식이가 또 나타났다. 오늘은 낡은 회색 담요에 싼 이불 보따리까지 한 손에 들었다. 비좁은 탁자 사이로 그 놈을 무작정 끌고 들어오는 것이다. 손님들이 눈을 크게 뜨고 바라보고, 레지가 뭐라고 해도 모르는 체하고 부득부득 고선생 곁으로 다가오는 것이다. 고선생은 눈살을 찌푸리고 일어섰다.
→ 다음날 어슬어슬해서이다: It was at dusk the following day.

[比較] refuse, waste, rubbish, trash, garbage
refuse는 여기 나온 말 중에서 가장 폭 넓은 말로, 제조인·가공인·건축인·가정주부 등의 소유주가 무용한 것으로 여겨 내버리는 것을 가리키며, 그런 것이 남에게 용도가 있든 없든 상관하지 않는다.

waste는 거의 refuse만큼 뜻이 넓은 말이지만, 보통 그것을 만든 사람이 쓰지 않는 것으로, 용법·환경·사람에 따라서는 쓰일 수도 있는 것에 적용된다.

rubbish는 쓸모 없는 물질이 쌓여 있는 것·헐어빠진 것·못쓰게된 것·다 써버린 것·가치 없는 것의 더미를 말한다.

trash는 헐어빠진 것, 그 속에 든 유용한 것이 다 없어진 것, 다듬을 때 베어낸 것이나 잘라낸 것 따위, 중요하지 않은 물질임을 강조한다. 미국 일반 용법에서 trash 는 흔히 rubbish 대신 쓰여서, 처치해야 하는 폐물을 가리키지만, 두 말이 다 이 뜻으로는 동물성이나 식물성의 쓰레기를 의미하지는 않는다.

영국에서라면 여기에 rubbish가 쓰일 것이다.
garbage는 어원적 뜻은 닭 따위의 「내장」또는 주로, 부엌·상점·시장 따위에서 나오는 식용에 부적당한 육류·채소 따위의 부스러기·찌꺼기 등을 포함하는 유기질의 쓰레기에 적용된다.
Some municipalities have a separate collection for ashes, garbage and other rubbish, while others have all put together and taken up at one collection.
garbage can은 「(부엌) 쓰레기통」이고, garbage truck은 「쓰레기 청소차」를 말한다.

[比較] strike, hit, smite, slap, swat, clout, punch, box, beat, knock, pound, thrash
strike는 보통 겨냥을 하고 일격을 가해서 바라던 효과를 거두는 것을 암시한다. 그러나 특히 at를 거느리거나 자동사로 쓰이는 경우에는 반드시 바란 효과를 거두는 것을 의미하지는 않는다.

이 말은 또한 손·곤봉·지팡이 따위를 사용해서 치는 것을 나타내는 대표적인 말이다.

한편 이 말은 여기에 나온 말뿐 아니라, pelt(팔매질로 때리다), buffet(손·주먹으로 때리다) 따위의 연거푸 때리는 꼴, rap(톡톡 때리다), whack(찰싹·홱 갈기다), bang(탕 치다) 따위의 소리내어 때리는 모양을 나타내는 말 대신으로 쓰일 수 있다.
hit는 보통 strike보다 구어적인 말이며, 대개의 경우 서로 바뀌어 쓰일 수 있다.

그러나 정확한 용법에서는 타격의 충격과 목표에 도달하는 것을 강조하는 경우에 이 말이 즐겨 쓰인다. 또한 대개의 일격을 가하는 것을 뜻한다.

또한 hit는 탄환 따위의 날아가는 무기·자동차 등과 확대된 용법에서는 정신·감정에 영향을 주는 충격에도 쓰인다.

smite는 고문체·시적·수사적인 말이나 글자대로의 뜻, 비유적 뜻에서 strike, hit의 대신으로 쓰일 수 있고, 때릴 때에 쓰인 힘을 강조한다.

slap은 손을 펴서 때리는 것을 말한다.
slap one in the face
swat(찰싹때리다)는 때리는 것과 눌러 으깨는 것이 포함된 말이다.
swat flies
clout는 구어적 내지 방언적인 말로, 몸이나 머리를 한 번 때리거나 연거푸 때리는 것을 말한다.
Nurses and mothers and schoolmistresses... clout our heads the moment our conclusions differ from theirs.
box는 펼친 손으로 특히 머리의 한편을 때리는 것을 뜻한다.

비유적으로, 형체가 없는 것에 쓰여, 어려운 작업이란 뜻을 내포하는 ‘소유하다, 지배하다’를 의미한다.

이 두 극단적인 의미를 갖고 있는 take는 어떤 방법으로나 무엇을 잡는 것을 의미한다.
take the opportunity/ take the temperature of a room by observing the thermometer/ take a bath/ take a rest
seize는 갑자기 세게 잡거나 쥐는 것을 의미한다. 따라서 이런 뜻을 강조하는 경우에는 take 대신에 쓰일 수 있다.

확대된 용법에서 잡은 것이나 잡는 것이 형체가 없는 것인 경우에는 이 말은 보통 급히 지나가는 것, 포착하기 어려운 것을 뜻한다.

또는 주먹다짐으로 그리고 불시에 빼앗는 것을 뜻하기도 한다.

또는 이해하거나 분석하기에 극히 어려운 것을 파악하는 것을 말한다.

비유적으로는 많은 사람 혹은 모든 사람의 정신력이 미치지 못하는 사물을 완전히 이해하는 능력을 암시한다.
grasp an idea
clutch는 흔히 무서움, 조바심에서 단단히 잡는 것, 잡고 싶은 것이나, 쥐고 싶은 것을 단단히 또는 발작적으로 grasp하는 것을 의미한다. 특히 자동사로 쓰이는 경우에는 grasp보다 잡는 데 성공하는 뜻이 덜 들어있고, 성공하는 뜻이 들어 있는 경우에만 꽉 쥐고 있는 뜻을 암시한다.

snatch는 돌연히 재빠르게 또는 남 모르게 슬쩍 seize하는 것을 의미한다. 이것은 비교하는 말 중에서 가장 갑작스러운 동작을 암시하지만, 가장 가까운 동의어인 seize처럼 폭력을 사용하는 뜻은 암시하지 않는다.

위의 예처럼 슬그머니 하는 일, 재빨리 구조하는 일, 무례하거나 난폭한 행위의 뜻을 품는다.

grab는 snatch보다 무례하고 난폭한 뜻이 더 강하고, seize만큼 폭력을 사용하는 뜻을 품고 있다. 위의 말 중에서 가장 천한 것, 남의 권리에 대해서 무관심한 것, 또는 자기가 원하는 것을 공공연하게 염치없이 집는 것을 보통 뜻한다.

[比較] teach, instruct, educate, train, school
teach는 배우는 이에게 지식, 설명, 훈련을 주고, 배울 것과 방법을 보여주고, 그 공부를 지도해서 무엇인가 배울 수 있게 하는 것을 강조한다.
The older child is teaching the younger one how to read./ teach arithmetic/ Some children learn to read by themselves, but most must be taught.
instruct는 보통 어느 특별한 과목에 대해 조직적으로 필요한 지식을 넣어주는 것을 강조한다.

educate는 고등 교육 기관에서 정식으로, 조직적으로 가르침으로써 개인의 잠재된 능력, 재능을 이끌어내어 발전시키는 것을 의미한다.

train은 ‘훈련하다’, 특히 현대 용법에서 조직적인 훈련, 연습 따위를 통해서, 어느 특별한 능력이나 기술을 발달시키거나 어떤 특별한 직업에 적응하도록 가르치는 뜻이 들어있다. 사람이나 동물에게도 쓰이는 말이다.

school은 educate의 뜻으로 가끔 쓰여, Some of them have been schooled at Eton and Harrow.처럼 하기도 하지만, 지금은 주로 train과 같은 뜻으로 쓰인다. 그러나 때로 거기에 견디기 어려운 것을 참는 훈련의 뜻이 덧붙여 있을 수 있다.

fall flat: 실패하다, 무위로 끝나다.
ex) Jack's suggestion fell flat at the meeting; no one thought it a good idea.
