remember는 가장 일상적인 낱말로 과거의 일이 노력하는 일없이 마음에 떠오르는 경우에도 쓰이고, 과거의 일을 상기하려는 의지가 발동되어 있는 경우에도 쓰인다. recall은 remember보다 formal style에서 쓰이며 상기하려는 의지·노력이 수반되는 경우에 쓰인다. 또한 recollect는 remember, recall…의 뜻을 갖는 이외에 흔히 기억이 불완전한 과거의 여러 가지 일들을 마음의 여유를 가지고 회상하고 연결시키는 심리작용을 가리킨다.

remember가 「마음속에서 상기한다」는 뜻만을 갖는데 반해서 recall, recollect, reminisce는 이와 같은 뜻 이외에 「과거 일을 회상하여 그것을 삼자에게 말로 표현한다」는 뜻도 지닌다.

Reuben Gonzales was in the final match of a major racquetball tournament and was looking for his first professional win.
At match point in the final game, Reuben made a super shot for the victory.
The referee called it good.
But Reuben disagreed with the referee.
Declaring that his shot had hit the floor first, he shook his opponent's hand and walked off the court.
As a result, he lost the match.
