It has always been typical of the arrogance of youth to assume that the older generation "has made a mess of things".

Philosophers assume that the love of wisdom is a natural endowment of the human being.

We cannot assume that all the vast numbers of people on the streets are actually inhabitants of this city.

This point can be explained using the following text, “Tommy had just been given a new set of blocks.
He was opening the box when he saw his sister coming in.”
A computer would have no clue as to what is in the box, but we assume immediately that it contains Tommy's new blocks.
We do so because we know that gifts often come in boxes and that opening the box is the natural thing to do.
More important, we assume that the two sentences are connected, whereas the computer sees no reason to connect the box with the blocks.
In other words, our interpretation of this simple text is based on common knowledge and expectations that are unavailable to the computer.

“Boys and girls, playtime is over, get back to work.”
Most of us learned early in life that work and play are separate, and that if you are playing you could not possibly be working.
But to have a livable work environment, a certain amount of playfulness or lightheartedness is required.
An innovative environment demands even more playfulness.
Assuming the matter-of-fact attitude may seem more efficient, but it constricts one's capacity to generate new solutions when needed.
The freedom to be playful expands creative opportunities.
The spirit that allows people to wear a peculiar tie or to laugh out loud without fearing what others think is the same spirit that encourages them to consider new ideas.

Hours passed.
Everything was still and quiet.
It was a battle of wills between the monkey king and the unknown monster whose existence the former had assumed.
It was the monster who gave way first.
Unable to restrain his greed, he popped up from the center of the lake and said in a loud voice,
“Why don't you drink? I am the guardian of this lake.
I tell you that the water is pure, refreshing, cool, and sweet.
Drink, my friends, drink.”
No, my good fellow,” replied the king, “your wishes will not be fulfilled in the way that you want.”
“What do you mean?” asked the monster.
“You won't be able to catch us.
We will drink the water of the lake and yet not fall into your trap.”
“How will you do that?” shouted the monster, amused at the monkey king's boldness.
“You will see,” replied the monkey king.
The monkeys then plucked long reeds from the marshes and drank the water through the reeds.
Frustrated, the monster disappeared back into the water.
The monkey king's cautious approach kept his troop from falling a prey to the cruel being's plot.

Most writers and poets suffer under the genius syndrome.
It is assumed that writing is a divine gift and that if you have that gift,
you should lock yourself away for three years and then come out with a masterpiece.
If you have to study writing, then you're not a genius and you shouldn't be a writer.
In fact, the intellectual privately agree with it.
However, Nicholas Delbanco doesn't believe the idea.
He says that if you want to improve your tennis skills, tennis lessons are a good idea.
He doesn't emphasize work that's entirely subjective and urges his students to imitate rather than create.

Social sciences study the area of human behavior.
Human behavior patterns vary from place to place and group to group.
However, natural sciences are somewhat different.
When a chemist studies hydrogen, he can assume that one hydrogen atom is very much like another,
wherever it is found, and that the conditions surrounding it can be quite accurately controlled.
The same is true when a physicist measures a metal bar;
he can be quite sure that it will not stretch or shrink in length as long as natural conditions are the same.
Because of the predictable nature of their subject matter, natural sciences are often called “easy sciences.”
그것은 물리학자가 금속막대기를 측정하는 경우에도 마찬가지이다;

I'm taking this opportunity to say something about tests and X-rays taken at clinics and hospitals.
People shouldn't assume that everything is OK just because they haven't received a report.
There's a chance that the report may have been filed without the patient being notified.

Last year, my husband was told by a resident physician at a highly respected teaching hospital that he would be called if anything "out of the ordinary" showed up.
He heard nothing and assumed that everything was OK.
Last week, he had annual checkup, and his doctor asked, "Why didn't you call to find out about the changes in your cells?"
The answer was, of course, "I didn't know about it."

After the fall of the medieval world view, we in the west suddenly became aware that we lived in a totally unknown universe.
In attempting to understand the nature of this universe we knew we had to somehow separate fact from superstition.
In this regard we scientists assumed a particular attitude known as scientific skepticism, which in effect demands solid evidence for any new assertion about how the world works.
Before we would believe anything, we wanted evidence that could be seen and grabbed with the hands.
Any idea that couldn't be proved in some physical way was systematically rejected.

Fashions are the currently accepted styles of appearance and behavior.
The fact that some style is called a "fashion" implies a social recognition that it is temporary and will eventually be replaced by a new style.
In small-scale, traditional communities, fashions are virtually unknown.
In these communities everyone of similar age and sex wears much the same clothing and behaves in much the same way, and there is little change in styles from year to year or even from generation to generation.
In modern societies, however, fashions may change very rapidly indeed: automobile bodies assume new contours every year, and women's hemlines rise and fall with the passage of the seasons.

The following suggestions may be helpful in dealing with identical twins.
First, remember that twins are individuals.
On holidays and birthdays, they deserve separate gifts, cards and recognition.
Second, make a genuine effort to tell twins apart.
Even though they may look very much alike, there are some distinguishing features that you can identify if you are willing to try.
Last but not least, don't assume that twins like the same things, or that they want to be together all the time.
Spending time with each twin separately will help you get to know them as individuals and make telling them apart easier.

Last night there was a long and detailed personal message on my machine from a teacher explaining why "David" had been transferred to her class.
There were some comments about his unacceptable behavior and a request that I call the school to discuss the problem.
The caller did not mention the name of the school and there was no number, so I was unable to let her know that she had reached the wrong person.
When that mother does not return the call, the teacher will assume she is not interested, which will be a black mark against her.

We always assume that an interest in the beauty of Nature is a sign of goodness in a person.
It is a strange assumption we make and neither do we understand why, generally speaking, we consider Nature to be beautiful.

Because of the revolt, the general assumed what was described at the time

Possibly for the first time, a soccer match has been delayed by laughter.
Five thousand Athenian soccer fans, awaiting the start of an exhibition match
between a Greek team and a Chinese team last year, rose and stood in respectful
silence as what they took to be the Chinese national anthem reverberated from
the stadium's loudspeakers. The Chinese team on the field, observing all those
standing Greeks, also came to polite attention, assuming that the Greek anthem
was being played.
Then a lilting female voice rose above the unfamiliar music - to extol the
virtues of a local toothpaste.
* an exhibition match: 시범경기.
He took her to be a teacher.

Mr.Jones lived for the most part, retired in the country, with one sister, for whom
he had a very tender a affection. This lady was now somewhat past the age of thirty,
an era at which, in the opinion of the malicious, the title of old maid with no
impropriety might be assumed. She was of that species of women whom you rather
commend for good qualities than beauty.

We are all familiar with the distinction represented by the words "civilization"
and "culture". Civilization, as I have already suggested, is usually thought of as in
the main materialistic achievement, culture as religious, acacemic and artistic; and it
is then assumed that not merely a parallelism but even a causal relationship
exists between the two phenomena.

The ocean is the earth's greatest storehouse of minerals.
In a single cubic mile of sea water there are, on the average, 166 million tons of dissolved salts, and in all the ocean waters of the earth there are about 50 quadrillion tons.
And it is in the nature of things for this quantity to be gradually increasing over the millennia,
for although the earth is constantly shifting her component materials from place to place, the heaviest movements are forever seaward.
It has been assumed that the first seas were only faintly saline and that their saltiness has been growing over the eons of time.
For the primary source of the ocean's salt is rocky mantle of the continents.
When those first rains came―the centuries- long rains that fell from the heavy clouds enveloping the young earth―they began the processes of wearing away the rocks and carrying their contained minerals to the sea.
The annual flow of water seaward is believed to be about 6500 cubic miles, this inflow of river water adding to the ocean several billion tons of salts.

The effects of CO2-induced climate warming on Antarctica have been studied using numerical models that simulate ice flow and changes in ice sheet and ice shelf size over time (Huybrechts and Oerlemans 1990, Budd et al. 1994).
The model predictions can be summarized in three main points.
First, the glaciers and ice shelves of the Peninsula are lost.
Second, the large Ross and Ronne-Filchner Ice Shelves, into which the West Antarctic Ice Sheet drains, are lost to basal melting assumed to be caused by increased SST.
Third, the volume of ice in both the West Antarctic and East Antarctic ice sheets increases as a result of increased snow accumulation.

While still inside the human host, the parasite assumes a form that enables it to infect other mosquitoes that bite the infected person.
Once it's transferred to a new mosquito, the parasite again transforms itself so that it can infect a new human host 10 to 14 days later when that person is bitten by the parasite-carrying mosquito.

The ability of falling cats to right themselves in midair and land on
their feet has been a source of wonder for ages. Biologists long
regarded it as an example of adaptation by natural selection, but for
physicists it bordered on the miraculous. Newton's laws of motion assume
that the total amount of spin of a body cannot change unless an external
torque speeds it up or slows it down. If a cat has no spin when it is
released and experiences no external torque, it ought not to be able to
twist around as it falls.

What forms of life were able to make such a drastic change in lifestyle
? The traditional view of the first terrestrial organisms is based on
megafossils ― relatively large specimens of essentially whole plants
and animals. Vascular plants, related to modern seed plants and ferns,
left the first comprehensive megafossil record. Because of this, it has
been commonly assumed that the sequence of terrestrialization reflected
the evolution of modern terrestrial ecosystems. In this view, primitive
vascular plants first colonized the margins of continental waters,
followed by animals that fed on the plants, and lastly by animals that
preyed on the plant-eaters. Moreover, the megafossils suggest that
terrestrial life appeared and diversified explosively near the boundary
between the Silurian and the Devonian periods, a little more than 400
million years ago.

Those who believe that drama evolved out of ritual also argue that those
rites contained the seed of theater because music, dance, masks, and
costumes were almost always used. Furthermore, a suitable site had to be
provided for performances, and when the entire community did not
participate, a clear division was usually made between the "acting area"
and the "auditorium." In addition, there were performers, and, since
considerable importance was attached to avoiding mistakes in the
enactment of rites, religious leaders usually assumed that task.

There is a clear distinction assumed between one who is supposed to know
(and therefore not capable of being wrong) and another, usually younger
person who is supposed not to know. However, teaching need not be the
province of a special group of people nor need it be looked upon as a
technical skill.

Once he is on it, a stairway is one of the safest places for a blind
person. You never find a chair left on a stairway, or a bucket or a
brick. There is never a stair missing from a stairway, and all the
stairs are the same height. There is almost always a handrail or at
least a wall to touch. There may be some uncertainty about the top step
and the bottom step, but with the white cane, that problem is
simplified.
This puzzles most sighted people, who tend to assume that stairs will be
dangerous for the blind. Sighted people know that they sometimes trip
and fall on stairs, and they assume that, if a sighted person is likely
to trip, a blind person is bound to.

We ordered sixty compact discs on 5 March and they were delivered
yesterday. Unfortunately, I regret that ten of them were badly
scratched. The package containing these goods appeared to be in perfect
condition and I accepted and signed for it without question. It was on
unpacking the compact discs when the damage was discovered, and I can
only assume that this was due to careless handling at some stage prior
to packing. I am enclosing a list of the damaged goods and shall be glad
if you replace them. I hope to hear from you soon.

Almost. This is a scrambled medical file listing a series of plastic surgeries.
The shooter's probably trying to hide his identity.
Or assume someone else's.
- To get close to Palmer. - Mm-hm. Call me when you get a name.

The polls are about to open in California, which is a key state for the Palmer campaign.
Earlier polls show the senator leading by a 15 per cent margin.
Assuming voting follows predictions, the senator...

I'm sure you're as surprised as I am that I'm calling you.
I'm surprised you waited this long. I assume you're calling because David still plans
to make the announcement about Keith and you can't stop him,
so now you want me to stop him?

- Hey. I'm here. - Bad timing?
No problem. I just could have used a few more minutes.
I wish I had 'em. Gimme what you got.
All right. He's the oldest of three children. His father died when he was a boy.
Means he learned responsibility early.
ln college at 16. lntelligent.
First in his class. Vice president of a company three years later.
OK. So he's ambitious, driven. Maybe too much so.
- He has a heart condition. - I know. I've got his pills.
He's very organised.
No charities, no...
He's not generous with time or money. Anal. I'd guess passive-aggressive. Control freak.
So make him sweat it out for a while, assume control, then behave erratically.
Yeah. One more thing. Um, a hunch, really.
With people this tightly wound, the threat of pain can be more effective than pain itself.
This is all just guesswork. I could have done more if I'd had time.
You did great. I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Hello, David. Since you fired me from your staff, I assume this is a social call.
I need to talk to you, in person.
- Why's that? - I got a very disturbing call today.
I was told that George Ferragamo's life may be in danger.
Now, who told you that? Frank Ames?
You know what an old lady he is. Just don't pay any attention to him.
I need to talk to you. Now.
It's a pretty busy day for me, David.
I know a few things about you, Carl. Things you don't want spread around.
Are you threatening me? Is that what it's come to after all these years?
It's come to whatever it takes to get you over here now.

Assume there's evidence on everyone.
Nick, you go with the Coroner. Sara, you and I work the plane.
This is a mobile crime scene. It might not be here tomorrow.

You all have different opinions, but you've taken the same point of view.
You've put yourselves in the shoes of the passengers.
But nobody put themselves in the shoes of the victim.
That's the point.
I'm sorry, what are you saying?
Nobody stopped to ask Candlewell if he was all right.
They just assumed because he was kicking the back of the Nate's seat, that he was an jerk.
Because he was pushing his call button, that he was bothering the Flight Attendant.
Because he was trying to get into the lavatory,
he was making the scene.
because he was going back and forth down the isles he was posing a threat.
He was a threat.
No.
아니야

What's up, Ecklie?
I need a DNA sample from you, Nick.
I assume you're trying to prove that Kristy Hopkins and I were sexually active last night.
We found a condom. Used.
And my DNA will match. No warrant necessary.
I have something else for you.
I got this off of vallet surviellence tape.
A license plate number?
Vehicle belongs to Jack Willman.

What do you mean, it doesn't add up?
Well, we're assuming that a couple of lamp hits to the head killed Darren, right?
For now. Yeah.

This is a blueprint for murder.
Assuming "K" is Kevin
they were planning to meet three days after he was murdered.
He paid Jessica thirty-five thousand dollars.
He called her as he was leaving the restaurant.
He wasn't supposed to die.
No either was Jessica.
Kevin Shepherd took a hit on his wife and something went wrong.
And we may have the proof.

She's probably still in high school.
Ah. Bless her heart.
Assuming Flynn was the target and it was a hit.
The shooter followed Flynn in the front door.
Shot the muscle first, then Flynn.
Then some poor kid, minding his own business.
Girls were last.
Four dead.
One still alive.
Make that five.
Guy died on the way to the hospital.

Assuming Erin was running for her life.
The Shooter follows her into the back room.
Shoots her twice. He would have been shooting toward the parking lot.
He shot toward the parking lot first,
and then toward the front of the store.
And you would only shoot toward the front of the store if there's somebody there.
So who was in the line of fire?

You'll let me know when I can pick up Simba.
You're assuming a lot. / So are you.

Yeah.
I'll be right out.
I have a visitor.
Hi. I have folic acid. I was worried about your eyes.
