As it is a completely koreanized science like electro engineering politics and library science, I believe it is quite natural for korean scholars to write about it in korean language for the easy understanding of Korean people. Translation without interpretation of footnotes on it is likely to be hard to understand. So it is sometimes rather convenient to read the source language text in itself. As a result translation seems less useful. We cannot make the foreign words ours just by changing them into Korean.

→ 「섬나라 근성」은, 이 문장의 「국제적 심성」의 반대의 의미를 갖는 표현이다. 일반적으로 「~ 근성」이라는 표현으로는 다음과 같은 것들이 있다.
- 영국인은 영국이 폐쇄사회라고 하는 비난을 받고 있기 때문에, 섬나라 근성을 버리지 않으면 안 된다.
As their society is criticized as being closed, the English must cast away their insular narrowness.
- 사람은 가난하면 거지 근성이 나오게 마련이다.
When one is reduced to poverty, the beggar will come out.
- 그런 일을 하다니 그도 치사한 상인 근성의 소유자다.

누구나 미래, 과거뿐만 아니라 우주의 먼 별까지 장거리 여행을 하고 싶을 것이다.
그러나 보통의 여행방법으로는 이것이 불가능하다는 것을 알고 있다.
시속 수백만 킬로미터의 속도로도 가장 가까운 별에 도달하려면 수천 년이 걸릴 것이다.
그러므로 우리는 어떻게 해서든지 우주 공간의 광대함을 극복해야만 한다.
어떤 신비한 방법으로 우주 공간을 뚫고 지나가야 하는 것이다.
그러나 이렇게 하기 위해서는 공간과 시간에 대해서 훨씬 더 많을 것을 알아야만 한다.
우리는 정말 공간이 무엇인지를 알고 있을까? 대답은 '아니오'이다. 다행히 우리는 공간을 통제할 수는 있다.
Everybody would like to make a trip to some distant stars in the space as well as into the future and past.
But we know that we could not make such a trip by means of an ordinary vehicle.
It would take thousands of years to reach the nearest star ever at the speed of millions of immensity of the space by all means.
That is to say, we must dash through the space by means of some mysterious method of transportation.
But, to achieve this exploit we should know much more than we do now about space and time.
Do we really know what space is? Probably the answer is "No". It is fortunate, however, that we can now control the space.

(7) 어제인 것 같은데 우리들이 처음 만나고 나서 실제로는 10년 가까이 되는군요.
→ 「～하고 나서 10년이 되다」는 It is ten years since～/ It has been ten years since~로 좋다.
Ten years have passed since~ 는 딱딱하지만 종종 쓴다.
→ You (can think) as if it were yesterday～ 와 같은 직역은 안된다.
(ANS) It seems like yesterday, but it's actually nearly ten years since we first met.

→ 겨울이 이 정도 추운 것은 당연하다: It is only natural that winter should be as cold as this. It ～ that … 구문에 should가 쓰이면 말하는 이의 놀람, 유감 그리고 옳고 그름 따위의 판단을 나타냅니다.
→ 이렇게 추운 겨울은 처음이다: This is the coldest winter I've ever had. I don't think we've ever had such a cold winter as this.
→ 지금까지 너무 따뜻했다: It has been too warm so far.
→ 이 정도 추운: as cold as this.
(ANS) “This is the coldest winter I've ever had." "It has been too warm so far; it's only natural that winter should be as cold as this."

(7) 그와 알게된지 아직 두서너 달 밖에 안되지만 지금은 마치 오랜 친구처럼 생각된다. 이해심도 있고 기분 좋은 친구이다.
→ ～와 알게되다: come to know～: become acquainted with～: make one's acquaintance
→ …한지 ～밖에 안 된다: It is～ since…: have passed since…
→ 마치 …인 것처럼 생각된다: it seems as if～: I feel as if [though]...

8. '여행만큼 즐거운 것은 없다'라고 옛날부터 일러 왔지만 오늘날에도 이에 반대하는 사람은 거의 없다. 미지의 곳을 여행하여 그곳 사람들의 인정이나 풍습에 젖어 보는 것은 인생 최고의 즐거움 가운데 하나일 것이다.
→ 여행만큼 즐거운 것은 없다: ① Nothing is more pleasant than traveling; ② Nothing gives us more pleasure than traveling. (부정어+비교급+than → 최상급의 뜻을 갖는 경우임)
→ 옛날부터 일러 왔다: goes an old saying that; as an old saying goes~
→ 이에 반대하는 사람은 거의 없다: Few people are against it.
→ 미지의 곳을 방문하다: travel to strange places
→ 그곳 사람들의 인정이나 풍습에 젖어 보다: get friendly with the people there and get friendly with their was of life; get friendly and familiar with the people there and their customs and manners.
(ANS 1) "Nothing is more pleasant than traveling." goes an old saying, and even today a great number of people still believe it to be true. To take a journey to strange places and become friendly with the people and familiar with their way of life may well bring us one of the greatest pleasures we can ever experience in our lives.
(ANS 2) "Nothing gives us more pleasure than traveling." as an old saying goes. Even these days few people are against it. Indeed, it is one of the highest joys we can get out of life to travel to strange places and get friendly and familiar with the people there and their customs and manners.

5. 우리는 날씨가 좋아질 때까지 여기에 머무르는 편이 좋다.
→「May as well+동사원형」=had better로서「~하는 게 더 낫다」라는 뜻이다. You (may as well) set to work at once. 너는 곧 일에 착수하는 것이 좋을 것이다.
→ We (had better) stay~로 하면 약간 그 뜻에 차이가 있어 서툴게 느껴진다. Weather 대신에 climate를 사용하지 말 것. Climate는 어떤 특정 지역의 일반적 기후를 말할 때 쓴다.
→「날씨가 좋아지다」 the weather improves/ the weather gets better
(ANS) We may as well stay here till the weather improves.

2. 불타는 태양 아래서 수영을 즐기던 것이 엊그제 같은데, 벌써 아침 저녁 이면 쌀쌀하다.
→ 「~하던 것이 불과 엊그제 같다」는 It seems as if (or as though) it had been just a few days ago that~. It seems only a few days ago that~ 현재의 사실에 대해서「마치 ~인 것처럼」이라고 할 때는 as if (or as though) 뒤에 오는 동사는 가정법과거가 쓰이지만, 여기서처럼 과거의 일을 말할 때는 가정법과거완료형으로 한다.
→ 「그는 모든 것을 알고 있는 것처럼 말한다」 He talks as if he knew everything.
→ 「나의 아주머니는 마치 나를 자기 아들처럼 사랑해 주신다」 My aunt loves me as if I were her own son.
→ 「그는 아무 일도 없었던 것처럼 보였다」 He looked as if nothing had happened.
→ 「그는 아픈 것처럼 보인다」와「그는 아픈 것처럼 보였다」의 차이는 「~보인다」라는 현재와「~보였다」의 과거 차이인데, 이것을 영어로 옮길 때는 look와 looked로만 달라지지, as if 후반까지 시제를 달리할 필요는 없다. He looks as if he were ill./ He looked as if he were ill.
→ 「불타는 태양 아래서」under a (or the) scorching (or burning) sun. 형용사를 붙여, 특수한 모양의 태양이라고 말할 때는 부정관사를 쓴다. 달도 마찬가지로, a full moon(만월), a half moon(반달) 등.
→ 「아침, 저녁으로 쌀쌀하다」feel chilly in the morning and evening; have cool(er) mornings and evening.
(ANS) It seems as if it had been just a few days ago that we were enjoying swimming under a scorching sun, but it is already a little chilly in the morning and evening.

1. 책을 빌려 읽는 것이라고 단정짓는 사람은, 정말이지 독서의 즐거움과는 거리가 먼 사람이라고 할만하다. 그 같은 사람은 독서를 단지 시간을 죽이는 것으로 밖에 생각하지 않는 것이다.
→ ~와 거리가 멀다: know nothing about ~; be a complete stranger
→ ~라고 말해도 좋다: It may [or can] safely be said that ~; We can safely say that ~
→ 그저 시간 죽이기: a mere means of killing time; only for an idle hour
(ANS 1) It may safely be said that those who assume that books are to be read by borrowing know nothing about the true joy of reading. These people think of reading as a mere means of killing time.

12. 우리는 날씨가 좋아질 때까지 여기에 머무르는 편이 좋다.
→「May as well+動詞 原形」=had better로서「~하는 게 더 낫다」라는 뜻이다. You (may as well) set to work at once. 너는 곧 일에 착수하는 것이 좋을 것이다.
→ We (had better) stay~로 하면 약간 그 뜻에 차이가 있어 서툴게 느껴진다. Weather 대신에 climate를 사용하지 말 것. Climate는 어떤 특정 지역의 一般的 氣侯를 말할 때 쓴다.

[比較] suppose, guess, imagine, assume, infer
guess는 자신 없이 추측할 때 쓰이고, suppose는 consider as true～란 뜻을 지닌다.
I am able to suppose how upset you are just from the expression in your eyes.(당신 눈빛만 보고도 당신이 얼마나 당황하고 있는지 짐작할 수 있네.)/ Can you guess how old I am?
imagine은 보다 더 넓은 문맥에서 창작적인 추측이나 사실과 다른 고의적인 추측을 가리킬 때 쓰이며 잘못된 추측을 암시할 때 쓰인다.
He imagines that people don't like him.
He had imagined that he had heard a scraping noise.
assume 역시 take as a fact or as true without proof라는 뜻인데, suppose보다는 formal style에서 쓰인다.
Assuming it rains tomorrow, what shall we do?
infer는 전제 또는 어떤 증거로부터 결론에 도달하는 경우에 쓰인다.

[比較] replace, supplant, supersede
replace는 지금은 잃어버린, 가버린, 깨뜨린, 낡은 물건(또는 사람)의 자리에 다른 물건(또는 사람)을 두는 것, 「～의 자리를 차지하다」(take the place of), 「～의 뒤를 잇다」(succeed)를 뜻한다.
Mr. Kim will replace Mr. Lee as president./ We replace defective tubes.
또한 「제자리에 돌리다, 돌려주다」(restore, return)를 말한다.
Please replace all divots.(모든 잔디를 제자리에 묻어 주십시오.)
supplant는 「대신 들어앉다」또는 폭력·음모·술책 따위로 남을 내쫓고 그 자리를 차지하는 것을 말한다.
The dictator supplanted the president.
supersede는 「대신하다」또는 대신 사용한 것이 개량된 것임을 암시한다. 우수한 것, 더 현대적인 것으로 대신하는 뜻을 품고 있다.
Buses are superseding streetcars.

[比較] sure, certain, confident, positive
sure와 certain은 흔히 바꿔 쓸 수 있다. 그러나 sure는 단순하고 일반적인 말로, 의심 또는 주저함이 없는 것을 암시한다. 즉, 다만 주관적인 확신의 상태를 강조할 뿐이다. 한편 certain은 특별한 근거·증거에 의한 확신을 강하게 암시한다. 따라서 certain이 한결 뜻이 강한 말이다.
I am sure(certain) that he is honest./ He is sure(certain) to lose./ I felt for time sure of his innocence; I am now certain of his guilt.
sure와 certain은 이렇게 서술 용법에서 흔히 바뀌어 쓰일 수 있는데, 한정 용법에서 sure는 a sure aim(꼭 맞히는 겨냥)처럼 ‘확실한, 실수 없는’의 뜻이고, certain은 There is no certain cure for his disease.와 The soldier faced certain death.처럼 ‘믿을 수 있는, 피할 수 없는’의 뜻을 나타내기도 한다. 그러나 대개 A certain person phoned.와 He had a certain charm.에서처럼 ‘어떠한, 어떻다고 꼬집어 말할 수 없는’이라는 전혀 다른 뜻으로도 쓰인다.
confident는 특히 어떤 기대에 대한 확신(certainty, sureness)이 견고한 것, 굳은 신념을 강조한다.
He's confident he'll win./ We are confident of success./ He feels confident of passing(confident that he will pass) the examination.
positive는 특히 자기의 의견이나 결론이 정확하다는 확고한 신념, 거의 독단적이 될 정도의 신념의 암시한다.
Are you positive it was after midnight?/ He's too positive in his beliefs./ As I can't be certain, I won't be positive.(확실하지 않아서 단언하지 않으련다.) ~21

[比較] therefore, hence, consequently, then, accordingly, so
therefore, hence는 for this reason의 뜻으로 앞선 진술에서 이끌어내는 필연적인 추론을 도입하는데 주로 쓰인다. therefore는 보통 결론을 도입하고, hence는 흔히 therefore와 바뀌어 쓰이기는 하지만, 앞선 진술을 강조한다. therefore는 특히 추리의 정확함을 그 뜻 속에 품고 있어, 논리학, 법률, 수학 따위와 격식 차리는 딱딱한 문체에 쓰인다.
All men are rational beings, Socrates is a man; therefore Socrates is a rational being./ He was the only candidate; therefore, he was elected.
consequently는 as a result, or sequence, or effect of the preceding(앞선 것의 결과로서)의 뜻이며, 흔히 추론을 도입하는 데에 쓰이기는 해도, 반드시 결론의 필연성을 의미하지는 않고, 오히려 결론에 대한 충분한 근거를 암시한다.
He said he would come; consequently I expect him.
또한 뒤따라오는 것이 앞선 것의 결과임을 가리킨다.
He said he would come; consequently I am waiting for him./ He is the popular candidate; consequently he will be elected.
이 말은 딱딱한 말이기는 하지만 therefore보다는 덜 딱딱하다.
then은 since the preceding is true(앞선 것이 사실이므로)의 뜻이며, 논리적인 인과관계를 나타내는 데에 쓰이는 경우, 조건문에서 결과를 표시하는 절에 주로 사용된다. 구어적인 말이다.
If A is true, then B is false.
accordingly는 in conformity with the preceding(앞선 것에 일치해서)의 뜻이며, 보통 논리적 결과 또는 인과관계를 나타내지만, 필연성보다는 결과의 자연스러움을 암시한다. consequently만큼 딱딱하지는 않은 말이다.
He said he was hungry; accordingly they shared their meager lunch with him.
so는 because the preceding is true(앞선 것이 사실이기 때문에), this being the case(경우가 이러하므로)의 뜻이며 구어적인 말이다. 어떤 인과관계를 가리키는 지 그 암시하는 바가 명확하지 않은 것이 보통이다.
The day was fine and so we set out.

[比較] wander, stray, roam, ramble, rove, range, meander
wander는 일정한 진로가 없거나 있어도 그것에 무관심한 것을 암시하고, 방향을 잡을 수 있는 것 또는 조종할 수 있는 것을 그렇게 하지 않고, 정처 없이 움직여 다니게 내버려두는 것을 가리키기도 한다.
We wandered through the stores, hoping to heat ideas for Christmas presents./ As she is very old, she occasionally wanders./ She wandered frequently from her subject.
stray는 일정한 진로, 바른 길, 정해놓은 장소 따위에서 벗어나는 것을 한층 더 강하게 암시하고, 흔히 길을 잃거나 그럴 위험이 있는 뜻을 품는다.

roam은 wander보다 자유스럽고 행동범위가 넓음을 강하게 암시한다. 주로 일정한 목적, 목표는 없지만, 헛되고 무익한 것을 뜻하는 것은 드물고, 흔히 즐거움과 기쁨의 뜻을 나타낸다. 특히 마음이 산란해서 또는 호기심에서 넓은 지역을 돌아다니는 것을 나타낸다.
roam through a forest/ The photographer roamed about the world.
ramble은 하는 일 없이 돌아다니는 것을 가리키고, 마음 편히, 정처 없이 돌아다니는 것을 암시한다.
We rambled through the woods.
rove는 넓은 지역을 돌아다니는 점에서는 roam에 가깝지만, 이 말에는 보통 특별한 목적이나 활동의 뜻이 포함된다.
range는 국한되나 관대한 지역을 헤매는 것을 가리키지만, 때로는 무엇을 찾느라고 wander하는 것을 암시한다.

meander는 특히 흐르는 물이나 길이 정처 없이 헤매는 것을 가리키며, 사람, 동물에도 적용된다. A brook meanders through the meadow./ We meandered through the park.

Our view is that there should be an institutional system in this
country as there is in advanced countries to prevent industrial

need in an expression of brotherly love. Material aid is immediately

ill-fated people in the afflicted areas as they seek to overcome their
present ordeal and strive for a better tomorrow.
